Hey Doug, you've kept the mystery of the picture of new things for awhile that you posted on your facebook page, been anxiously waiting for what they are :p I was wondering if you could comment on your thoughts of the Chauvet Intimidator Trios. They have stood out to me as a perfect wedding light that does everything. Do you ever foresee renting/buying/using them in any of your rigs? Thanks for any comments!
we don't have an office, and i dunno what a strage is. do you mean stage? not sure what a stage tour is. we do mobile gigs, and show the set up in the gig logs. i guess that's the stage?
Doing a charity event with a budget of £3000, could possibly push £4000 for lighting/sound. What do you suggest we get. There will be about 800-1000 people there.
I was wondering why there wasn't any moving heads in this rig. Then you answered my question with how easy the tbars go in the flight case. I've done something similar with mine, all my mirror scanners are hooked up to a tbar that has wireless to it so all it needs is to be plugged in. BTW: Hope this isn't a question you've been asked a ton, but do you mind commenting on wireless: You appear to use generic wirelesss uplights but use wired for most of your moving head/chase work? Any particular reason? Lag I'm guessing. You guys have been an inspiration to my lighting rig - taught me the true power of sticking with a couple of types of lights but lots of them. I love how clean your system looks!
Thanks! The t bars have nothing to do why there aren't any moving heads. First, there's no haze, and moving heads are an aerial effect, but if you can't use haze there's no reason to bring aerial effects. Second, they didn't have the budget for it. This is our second cheapest package we offer, with the most cheap being simply with only 2 t bars instead of 4. With regards to wireless, it's just that wired dmx is just much more reliable and one less thing to troubleshoot generally. Plus, if the wireless fails, you have to run it all wired anyway, so it's easier to just run wired from the start. On the other hand, finding one bad cable in a line of hundreds of cables can take much longer than just swapping out a faulty wireless dongle, so each has their own approach for troubleshooting, but generally if wired is working there is essentially zero chance it will suddenly fail mid show, whereas wireless can suddenly create issues midshow. Anyway, for uplighting, wireless is kind of the only practical option for length of time setting setting up, and trip hazards regardless of how well the cables are taped down, and if catering is rolling things over the cables they'll be damaged or break eventually. Nothing special with lag or any technical details, it's just basic stuff. If you like either system more, for just DJ stuff, go for either! There's also an equipment list in the description. We rent those generic uplights. We plan on buying some chauvet freedom pars at some point.
Thanks Doug! I appreciate all the work you put into gig logging (as I'm currently going through your videos to get movement ideas for my moving heads). I have 6 freedom strips (bought about 2 weeks before they decided to discontinue them). Pretty radical to setup uplights in minutes. I have noticed a slight lag when I'm bumping the lights very very quickly, but other than that the wireless has worked flawlessly; was just curious as to your preference and why. Do you happen to know if hex leds have the same brightness as tri-colored leds by chance? Nowhere can I find out that information, though many of chauvet's lights seem to be brighter in the tri versions over the hexes (it really made me curious when the next colorband-m usb wasn't upgraded with hexes...argh)
Hex vs tri doesn't inherently mean anything in terms of brightness, you just have to look at the photometric specifications of the light to determine how bright they are. chauvet doesn't publish lumens numbers, which is mostly what you want to look at for uplighting, but they do publish lux with distance and beam angle, and there are some calculators online you can use to convert lux to lumens fyi, lux is a perceptual brightness value, and it is somewhat relative to lumens. basically how bright something *makes something else*, like how much it illuminates something specifically, whereas lumens is an absolute brightness value which represents straight up how many photons are coming out of the light source. an example the most extreme, high lux, but low lumen fixture is a laser, whereas an example of the most extreme, high lumen, low lux fixture is a strobe or crowd blinder, if that makes sense
Thanks for that explanation, I hadn't fully wrapped my head around lumens vs lux just knew lumens had more detail. I'm trying to wrap my head around the freedom par quad having 2,464 lux @ 2 m and the freedom par hex having 1,372 lux @ 2 m. That's what first made me think there must be a difference. Just want to make sure if I buy hex I'm not taking a hit in lumens over their tri counterparts.
it's not just at 2m, it's also the beam angle. the freedon par hex at 1372, 2m, at 23 degrees, is a lot different than 2300 (for the non ip version, 2464 for the quad ip), 2m, at 15 degrees. that's a huge difference in how much the light is being focused it, aka, the raw lumens being focused in. like i said, use an online calculator to determine lumens. www.dmslighting.com/tools/illuminationconverter.html also, lumens for uplighting is just a rule of thumb that i like to go by because more lumens means more photons bouncing off the walls which means the room has more ambient light, which is what i personally want. however, uplights with a lower lumen output, but higher lux rating, like the freedom par quad, will have tighter beams on the wall that *look* brighter *on the wall*, but since it's outputting less lumens, less photons, it will light up the room with ambient light less even though it look's brighter. it's a personal preference thing. i used to prefer tight beams with lower lumens, now i've switched
that was my personal laptop and i must have sold that back in like 2013. then i got a new personal laptop, an aorus, which i still have and is fine (even though i'm selling that soon too for a desktop). we got a macbook pro and a dell xps 15 as company laptops so that they're always available and don't have personal software n stuff on them so they're much less bogged down and cluttered
Why do most of you guys in the USA use a table instead of a proper DJ Booth / Stand ? as the height of a table is meant for sitting at and standing at one will make you hunch over to reach the controller like you did in the gig log which will give you bad back doing it for hours. where a booth like this one ruclips.net/video/6ol4XsQt0Z8/видео.html is very quick to set up and brake down and has a much better working height you can also get a black scrim and a led star cloth for it too.
well for us, they're not very sturdy like this simple standard 6ft table, they don't offer as much table space, and they look tacky in our opinion. we do have our eye on a nice 6ft, all aluminum, adjustable height table though, because yeah the height of this one sucks
I remember when you originally got the ETX subs, you seemed to be not big of fans due to the distortion (mixer issue) and then the smell of coil "burning" or running hot. Do you still like these speakers? I am ready to upgrade but I can't find a sub to listen to in person. Nobody stocks the ETX where I am at.
The distortion wasn't entirely a mixer issue. It was sending a fairly clipped signal which we did discover was causing problems, but it's still quite distorted at high volumes even with the mixer solved. Not to the level of kw181, but still noticeable to us. Not to mention they don't get very low in real world use, and certainly are not loud enough to be worth $1500 retail in our opinion. They do sound good at low volumes though, we'd say a pair is good for a max of about what we did for Camp Hill Prom this past year, aka the video uploaded before this one. We'll have a review of the etxs out before the end of the year, we promise!
Doug Berry I see what you mean. I appreciate the response. We will still have to rent extra 181's for our bigger rigs unfortunately, but the ETX's sound like would be a good upgrade for gig sizes similar to what you use. My standards are lower than what you guys do, but they have been getting higher and higher...and with that, the price of equipment gets higher and higher too :(
Were you looking to get just one etx or two? Also, you shouldn't be mixing different kinds of subs at gigs, we'll have a video coming up probably next month explaining some speaker things like that as well.
Doug Berry I was looking at getting two ETX's. I know mixing speakers is a big no no. The OCD issues alone of how it looks bugs me, but sound quality I know is the bigger issue. With the gear I have available to me to rent, I can only get QSC subs though. I can maybe get an EKX sub or two somewhere but QSC is the only thing available for me to rent...unless I go with a high end system but requires a tech to set it up and run it which is expensive.
If you were going to get two etx, I'd recommend instead to get a single danley th118. Including an amplifier, it should cost the same as the pair of etxs, but will be as loud as 4-6 etxs.
i like avo more than chamsys and in some ways more than ma. i don't like ma command or fader wings for the cost & size considering their fairly limited executor quantities, and i can't carry around or afford an ma2 light lol now that chauvet owns chamsys, maybe we'll see a huge price drop especially in the usa, so maybe i'll take a second look at them
the tripods legs are all correct here. i'm not sure you realize what needs to be 90 degrees, where you might have heard that, or what that means really. if each leg were 90 degrees from the center pole, they would be literally pointed straight out. each leg shown in this video is 90 degrees *from each other*, or 45 degrees from the center pole.
PHEW!! Finally got to this video. Spent the past few weeks watching your past videos. Learnt a lot. Just wanted to say Thank You....
No problem! Glad you enjoyed them!
Fantastic quick update video! Keep it up. I always watch your vids!
You guys are awesome, keep up doing these gigs!
That was the cleanest setup I have seen in a long time. (Other than the drinks) it was almost sterile. That takes work--Kudos guys.
Simple but so deadly lol
nice!:) best gig log channel.
You pack a lot of punch when it comes to gigs nice vid and new sub
I know I'm late but excellent work my friend.
LOVE IT.
we need more gig logs :o
nice set up and i love the bass.. looks like the EV ETX series
yep, equipment list in the description
Can you guys make a video of a full session of programming for your lights.
Can we some more videos please (I love them)
Nice show....simple easy, no rent cost....extremely quick set up and take down---does that light crate fit in the Mercedes ?
that's right, and it does with ease!
Nice Breakdown Process.
Do you guys notice the etx subs limiting really early? I use them paired with etx 15p’s, wondering what settings you use, cheers
We just run them in live mode with 100Hz low pass. We don't notice them limiting early, they're just not super loud.

can you do a office and strage tour soon?
we don't have an office, and i dunno what a strage is. do you mean stage? not sure what a stage tour is. we do mobile gigs, and show the set up in the gig logs. i guess that's the stage?
think he means "storage"
we rent a lot of equipment now, so we don't have storage. when we own it all, we will for sure!
sorry, i ment storage
New vid 🎉🎉
Greetings from Holland Nederlands
Where are the video"s??
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that the V-Moda headphones he is using
yep, m-100s
Whats your opinion of Bose 802's? For portable dj gigs like this for example.
We're not a fan of bose anything, but if you had subs with those 802 things they'd probably be fine
Okay, thanks for your opinion.
Whats the name of the song at the begining of the video?
What was the song in the beginning
Ties4Sound thanks
Song namessssss
where do your rent the soundbridge xyons from?
a local company
Doing a charity event with a budget of £3000, could possibly push £4000 for lighting/sound. What do you suggest we get. There will be about 800-1000 people there.
i dunno, get a lot of stuff. i have no idea what the local rental companies around you offer or how much they would charge

Those RCF not EV main speakers this time? Why the change?
+DJ_Chill Nope. There's also an equipment list in the description.
Ah closer inspection shows they are. Sorry, looked like an RCF logo initially!
how do you make a remix deck on the Traktor software i been trying to make one i don't no how too👎

weow. Nice. Still using Avo?
yes, just not in these past two videos because it was being serviced
Doug Berry Just gonna ask this: Why did you choose Avo over let's say Chamsys or MA. What's your opinion? :D
i like avo more than chamsys and in some ways more than ma. i don't like ma command or fader wings for the cost & size considering their fairly limited executor quantities, and i can't carry around or afford an ma2 light lol
now that chauvet owns chamsys, maybe we'll see a huge price drop especially in the usa, so maybe i'll take a second look at them
Doug Berry But let's say that the price wasn't an issue. What would you go for? Keeping in mind the portability, technicality etc.
ma is quite expensive but a increacable tool
Your tripod legs are not out far enough. The outrig bars need to be 90° to the central pole
