    I have had mine for about 3 weeks. This is probably the best JinHao, yet. The only question I had was whether the nib would dry out and hard start after sitting for awhile so I loaded it up with Platinum Carbon Black, wrote with it a day or two and then let it sit on a shelf for 5 day. Pulled it off the shelf and it wrote like it was inked 3 minutes ago.
    I love this thing. Nice review as always.

    Thanks, Chris! Excellent review as always. I've had my Jinhao 9056 for a couple of weeks but haven't reviewed it yet. My review will be up this Wednesday. I'm pleased you're pleased with it. I like many of the cool features and evolutions visible on this pen.

    I decided to get one. It was delivered today. It is really lovely, and the texture and feel of the pen is wonderful. I expected to like it, but it is nicer than I expected. I have not inked it up yet, but will be getting some new ink later this week, so I am holding out until they arrive. Thank you for your enjoyable, informative, and influential reviews.

    I don't take into account the quality of manufacture of steel nibs when I buy cheap pens anyway, I have a Wing Sung 699 which had a terribly made nib with bits of extra metal around the breather hole and a really poor scratchy and dry writing experience but after a little while of improving the feed and working on the nib it is now writing like a wet icicle, one of the smoothest pens I have, almost too smooth and slippery in fact. If you know what your doing even a little bit with a razor blade and a micro mesh kit you shouldn't be too concerned about receiving a bad nib at this price.

      Agreed. My 699 M nib is excellent.

    'Tiger wood' is Bocote, almost all Chinese sellers of both wooden products and stock timber call it Tiger wood as that is what they called it traditionally because of the grain but the two names refer to the same species. It is my favourite wood (in line with Lignum Vitae) because of its grain and its subtly translucent iridescent finish when shellaced.

    Always a pleasure to see wood pens. Have you ever needed to condition or wax them? Are they sealed?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +5

      I use a mixture of mineral oil & beeswax. Cleans & conditions wood, accents the grain.

    I was on the fence about buying this until I saw your video. It is on order to be delivered tomorrow. I can't wait to try it. I got it with the fine nib. This would be my second Jinhao fountain pen ( I have the X159 which I love) and it is going to get a lot of use . Thank you for your channel. Consider me subscribed.

    Bocote is my favourite wood and the aesthetics of this design are great. As it's so much cheaper than the wooden Conklin all American (of very similar design) I will definatly be getting one and applying some shellac to it.

    Very nice. Thank you. I do wish it had a band on the cap to prevent splitting, but I suppose/hope the plastic insert will do the job.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +1

      The design is so clean. A cap band would interrupt the lines. Pen tolerances & cap liner will avoid putting tension on cap.

      Not the outside. Use a soft cloth & some coating, I use an mineral oil & beeswax blend i mention that in the video.

    I've never really been a fan of this sort of clip design, preferring to see a ring, finial or some other externally visible supporting structure. However with this pen I feel my resolve weakening, particularly given its spring nature. It seems to be appearing out of the wood seamlessly & a little mysteriously, making me wonder what lies beneath and how it works. On this pen it seems to be the perfect choice and I can hear a quiet yet persistent voice whispering in my ear to launch the eBay app...

    Greetings from Australia.
    I have the three wooden pens you displayed en route from China at this very moment.
    I love wood pens.
    Can you please advise how you treated your wooden pens. You mentioned Beeswax/Linseed oil. It could be worth a future video?
    Great video.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +2

      My partner is a beekeeper, she made the beeswax mineral oil to preserve the wood. It works well but there are many alternatives. Look for a penetrating preservative wood product. I apply a few times a year.

    Between this pen and the Hongdian 660, which do you prefer and recommend?

    Hi Chris - I have this pen too, and like it very much. Just out of curiosity, what rating do you thing you’d give the pen if you put a Goulet nib on it? Also what ratio of beeswax to mineral oil should I use if I want to try that idea?
    Thanks for an interesting video!

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +1

      Generally the ratio of beeswax to mineral oil is 1 to 4; this is not exact - the more oil the softer the resulting compound so in a warm environment you may want to reduce that ratio. I generally do not rate a pen after I modify it, replace nib. Purpose is to rate pen as received. I might rate a nib separately. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Chris, regarding the Jinhao 9056 would you consider using shellac or wipe on poly as a more robust protection for this lovely wooden pen. I ask this because I worry about strong pigmented inks staining the wood. Cheers, Bob.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +1

      I prefer a wax coating. I like the look & feel & it provides good protection. Need to apply regularly. The others would work for extra longer lasting protection.

    Hi Chris, just fascinated about your care of wooden fountain pens. How do you apply it to the wooden pens such as these? Is there a specific way of applications compared to a normal wooden furniture? I’m a little bit worried regarding about the metal section bits outside of the pen. I’m planning on doing the exact same thing for my moonman m1000 but worried that the rivets outside the pen might get rusted. Any tips?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +1

      No issues with oil-based products I use. I have a cotton rag, wipe on, wait an hour, wipe off. Some furniture products are water-based, I would not use them. I expect the M1000 rivets are brass, shouldn't rust. How do you like the M1000?

    • @maquiwarriors
      @maquiwarriors 3 года назад +1

      @@chrisrap52 Thanks chris! i shall apply those methods soon. So far so good, i like the weight of it. I was skeptic about it at first. I thought it would be a bit on the heavy side but surprisingly it is not. The metal section wasn't slippery and the nib writes spectacularly out of the box in my opinion. Overall, very happy with it. Bought two so far. Getting the last color soon!

    I've always worried about maintenance on a wooden pen body. It appears from the previous comments here, that I have been fussing needlessly.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 года назад +3

      I have some old 30+ year old Pilots that have cracked barrels. I treat all my wood pens at least once a year to avoid drying out & cracking. I have put Orange Oil inside caps & barrels that have exposed wood. Wood does require more maintenance than plastic or metal. Maintaining that Wood Look is my reward.
