A Message from the Future II: The Years of Repair

- Do we have a right to be hopeful? With political and ecological fires raging all around, is it irresponsible to imagine a future world radically better than our own? A world without prisons? Of beautiful, green public housing? Of buried border walls? Of healed ecosystems? A world where governments fear the people instead of the other way around?
“A Message From the Future II: The Years of Repair” is an animated short film that dares to dream of a future in which 2020 is a historic turning point, where the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic and global uprisings against racism drive us to build back a better society in which no one is sacrificed and everyone is essential.
The film is a sequel to the 2019 Emmy-nominated short film “A Message From the Future” with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and features the art of Molly Crabapple, with the political storytelling of Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis, and Opal Tometi. The cast of narrators from around the world includes Tometi, Emma Thompson, Gael García Bernal, and the Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey.

"We're all entangled: making each other sick, keeping each other alive." Wow. So true.
If you read the Lockstep scenario from the Rockefeller document, this film is describing aspects from it and its associated alternative scenarios for the future of tech and international development. They are Clever Together and Smart Scramble. Read them and then watch this again. It's a plan or at least a blueprint for the future regardless of what anyone else may say to the contrary.

I don’t think they have ever encountered real criminals. Not everyone is in prison because of racism or lack of employment. There are some very sick and dangerous people in the world. There will always be bad apples.
Homes will be the new prisons. Geofencing
I agree, these things will happen, but it will take many decades. I don't expect to be alive to see this world.
If we do not start it now this will never happen!

hello intercept, could you do versions in different languages?
That was AOC's message fron the future. Now please hear my message from right now:
"i do not know if the world is going to look like this in 10 years of the GND, but if it is does, remember 2 things. The first thing you should remember is that that the people who made it this way have a *cough cough cough* Minecraft home address (in Minecraft of course).
The second thing you should remember is that iron swords in Minecraft are sharp (in Minecraft of course)"
So, that was my message from present day. If you have any questions, please ask them in the replies.
Wow this is amazing this is the vision that we need
Please let this come to pass. Very well done, thanks!
Mao would love this !
U thank the creators of this video. I come back to it as a reminder and for inspiration to keep pushing forward. ❤️🙏🏽
This film inspires us to imagine the future in terms of a reformation...way beyond a return, repair, or renewal...last reformation was about 500 years ago...'this time now...

Such a powerful vision. Love it.
Love this, this needs to happen 🌳❤️
Thanks for this. It's very much needed. I actually imagine our best possible future very much as you've painted it here, so it's heartening to know that there are others who share the vision.

This is a compelling and creative video, and I appreciate this story for the visions of solidarity and reciprocity it dares to dream. However, ultimately, I’m not sure whether representing such an idyllic future, even if the road there is shown to be very painful - helps us to grapple with the struggles in which we find ourselves? Who are these humans who have somehow overcome internecine conflict, who have surmounted the constitutive contradictions that inhabit the struggles of the self and the ego? The new paradigm seems nostalgic for a kind of eden that humans have always cast forward, or located externally, throughout the ages. Perhaps the conversations we need to engage at this time revolve around the nostalgia for what perhaps was never humanly possible, and what increasingly will never be planetarily possible. In a world where extinction of plants, insects, corals… entire ecosystems -- is happening so fast, we cannot really know what survival will look like. I am grateful for this video’s effort to inspire us to go on, and at the same time have to question how we might more radically embody and represent the type of hope that Jonathan Lear explores in his book, Radical Hope. In the face of the magnitude of collapse underway, ways of being on this planet that many of us may hold dear or rely upon, are and will continue to simply cease to happen. How do we live with that?
Take yourself seriously much?
we fight for what we believe in, that's how- even to death. If we hate egoism and corruption and profit making and exploitation enough, we will not be stopped.
I think your own comment hit the answer. We need to look inside and "think small" if we want to solve the socio-political issues. The body is a composite of many parts with the soul at their head. A sick soul means a sick body. The community/country (aka political body) is composed of many parts, but is it so clear who is leading them? And is that leadership focused on the collective "soul"/culture, or on meeting material needs and satisfying citizens' fear/desire? Bottom up solutions require us to start with the ego and the self and teach them moderation if we want to reform the culture, which needs moderation in the extreme if we want to extend our planetary stay
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! Showing the present as past makes it crystal clear where we need to go- and how to get there. Gracias Gael, mi tocayo.
Yes first they need to kill us though with their viruses and vaccines in order to bring this about.
Who writes this kind of drivel? It is not a premier dream, not a vision involving any imagination. I hope this is not the intended solution......This really is filling devastation with an infantile void, a sort of hopeless hopefulness; the taking of a shortcut to the valley floor by driving off a cliff. The lack of maturity, intelligence, insight, etc leaves me desperate.
Together we can unite..Together we are strong

This was completely captivating. My oh my what a future this is. WOAH
Just a shame 'they' need to kill us with their viruses and vaccines and goodness knows what else in order to achieve it.
Beautiful and a much needed message.
I'd like to buy a print of one of the panels. This is beautiful
can you keep making these? i watch the first one every time i lose focus on what we can build together
Let us hope for a time when we can look back upon our current times as a necessary breakdown needed for a wake-up buildup. A bad dream that we needed to experience.
Why should our rulers kill millions of people so that they can institute their ideal society? I can assure Stalin's vision of a beautiful future when he sacrificed 50 million was much the same. The final line shouldn't have been 'no one is sacrificed'. What they actually meant is no one is sacrificed again. They think it is okay for us to be murdered with their vaccines and their viruses and their lockdowns so that they can build their beautiful idealistic future. Wake up!
beautiful and inspiring. I love the story line and I am enthralled by the art. Bravo!!!
It's a beautiful dream. I hope it comes true.
I bet if we asked our rulers extra nicely, they would give us just such a future. After all they ALL can't be psychopaths. Can they?
Not all those who rule us are psychopaths. Most of them are sociopaths!
Bob Boldt omnicidal sociopaths
That's why more and more people are advocating for a revolution. They will never give this future to us, maybe we need to take it.
@@unicyclejack "Take it easy, but take it!"
Psychopaths by definition are sociopaths if they socially active. And yes they can. Most of us are. It depends on degree of psychopathy.
On individual level that phenomenon shows how much parents were in competition with each other or one over another (sometimes it's a constant war). Oppressed kid needs a lot of compensation in everyday life just to survive psychologically.
Message is clear - if you didn't inherit stable neutral state of mind from your parents you are somehow psychopaths. Do not make babies! They'll run over you for sure if you don't kill them.
Beautiful message, and beautiful illustrations by Molly Crabappple.

This is utopic. And I loved it!
This is utopic, and why I can’t take this seriously. Humans (unfortunately) are hardwired to fuck up.
@@firewithfire848 this attitude is the problem. Stand up dude!
You did notice she said there would be NO SHOPPING. Think about that. No stores.
matthew barash ...My “attitude” has 100,000 years of human history to back it up. I wish we were a more peaceful and loving species, but we’re not. We could be, I don’t consider humanity a lost cause. And I make a point of being peaceful and loving in my own life and I treat others well. But I’m just one man with my own flaws.
I like the idea and form of this because I believe story-telling is important to help people re-envision the future. But this particular scenario is flawed in that it relies on models from the past and a nostalgia for a world that can only exist if there were far fewer people on the planet, as it was in the past. Also, it could only happen if everyone was born with the same high level of intellectual discernment, a quality which is useless to the pedestrian level understanding that is necessary for living day to day life. It would be more likely to happen if it were imposed by an enlightened monolithic ruler. The united nations was formed so that we wouldn't have more war. It turns out some people like war, not just the powerful. People think it is a human right to work for whoever is willing to pay money, regardless of the ecological or social consequences i.e. mining, both for data and precious minerals, logging, manufacturing weapons , cars etc. People in general do not know what is best for them, where the economic system they live in comes from or how the world at large that they oblivious to is affected by their actions. They might have an idea, but they are often wrong because they have been fed poor information or disinformation by their family culture or lore or other vested interests. They think when they flush the toilet or put out the garbage the waste just disappears. They argue that governments can and should effect changes that they (governments) are powerless to make. I agree that health care, food, and shelter are basic human rights and that all should have access. But it's not only the CEO of Nestlé who disagrees. There are many who believe that their genetic/geographic heritage or wrongs done to their gene pool in the past makes them more entitled than others to resources. You can't really blame people because from the standpoint of the selfish gene all civilization and its components, including language and political systems, are expressions of an innate strategy for self replication. Most social problems in the world are caused by people self-identifying with a group that feels entitled due to its genetic heritage, or to put it more simply, war is about one gene pool trying to supersede another or all others. Is there a way to cure people of that? I still hold out hope that humans can learn from their mistakes and make a better world, but never a perfect world.
Best thing I watched today. Oh my, I love dystopian and this was so spot on. Kudos to everyone involved
2:23 I don't get it, meatpacking plants will exist in the future or noone is sacrificed? Do nonhuman lifes matter and what if there is an infestation?
YES. Daring to dream...
It’s a nice thought. But with this lot in charge?
Revolution, anyone?
@@unicyclejack I believe the uprisings bit at the beginning is addressing that. I think its intended to happen.
Why does the Intercept need to do a fundraiser? Isn't the owner of the Intercept a billionaire? Why doesn't he donate his money instead of being a hoarder sociopath?
It's a wonderful vision of a beautiful new world. But it is not by far the first. the tales of failures are many, long and cruel. Just beware, if history is ignored then you are condemned to repeat it.
It is just a shame 'they' need to destroy the old world to create 'their' beautiful new world. And as always with this kind of idealism which we saw with Hitler and Stalin it will involve a huge amount of death. Never mind. At the end they reassure us no one will be sacrificed [again].

With world population headed to 9.8 billion by 2050 and leveling out at best at 11 billion by 2100, we have to find realistic ways to feed them all. Romantic notions about "small farms" will not get us there. We need modern high yield agricultural practices. Anything else will just lead to more deforestation and eventual famine. It's time to stop vilifying today's farmers and the advanced biotechnologies they use to enhance their crop yields. If we don't, it will be the poor and the vulnerable who will pay, once again.
Brilliant. We have to be hopeful, that will lead us to act because we will see what COULD BE. Too simplistic?
