Possibly the most useful information you'll receive today. You'll seldom if ever clean an antique skillet that didn't have some type of buildup. Usually its hard to imagine someone eating out of it. It rarely happens but sometimes the labels are covered in buildup and after electrolysis it turns out to be a marked piece. I bought a gate mark skillet for $8 that was marked Erie when the crust was removed. The small issue was Erie didn't produce gate marks, other than that... lol There went my private island !
Thanks for this video. I often roast whole chickens in my #10 & #12 cast iron skillets. I preheat the skillet in the oven, then sear the bottom and both sides of the chicken before throwing the skillet into the oven. Splattering fat finds its way onto the skillet interior & exterior sides and becomes baked on. I will have to try this method when the gunk builds up a bit.
Thanks, I've waiting for what to do with my Grandma's old skillet. The surface is great, but the bottom and sides need help. It's 90 to 100 years old and cooks great! Better to try this rather than a lye bath!
Thank you. Can't number the people I have told to clean their C.I. with hot water, soap and some 4/0 steel wool. By the time you get to shiny metal, your fingers will be bleeding. Now I have a video to send them.
This is great. I can't bring myself to use those harsh chemicals, eg. lye or oven cleaner, not only for the pan, but to dispose of it down the drain....I'm afraid of what it would do to the old pipes in my house and the city sewage line. Thanks so much. God bless you.
I have an old, small skillet that was my grandmother's. It has a little hole, maybe 1/16 of an inch, maybe smaller. It kind of looks like it was stabbed with an icepick.😅 Is it still safe to use?
The heat ring makes the skillets get gunky. I decided to strip mine in a lye bath and start over. One thing I have leaned, after the first major seasoning, don't season the bottom of the skillet any more.
Thank you sir for helping out with this issue. I have wondered many times what to do..💁☺

Love my cast iron. Griswold and Lodge pieces. Great advice.

Thanks, I was beginning to think I was going to have to redo my whole pan by stripping it down and starting the seasoning process all over.

Have you ever tried to sear Tuna steaks? I have not had perfect luck searing and keeping the middle still a bit rare?
