The phrase "Crosses grow on Anzio, where no soldier sleeps and where hell is six feet deep" is from a poem written by Audie Murphy himself in which he describes the horrors of the battle of Anzio, you should check it out, it's really beautiful and deep

This is easily one of their most popular songs. They often close out concerts with this song bc it has such a massive effect and is so recognizable with that whistle.
Audie's son gave Sabaton one of the posters for the movie "To Hell and Back" as a gift for honoring his father with something upbeat and metal rather than a country ballad (which is what the majority of songs about Audie are in the style of.)

In Holtzwier, France, the citizens of this town that the Allies liberated have built a modest, but moving and informative memorial to honor Audie, and also the troops that fought and died. They have a 2 dimensional metal sculpture of Audie on the tank, and a photo of Audie with his medals. The first time I heard this song on RUclips, they were singing at a huge festival, and all the Europeans knew the words to the song. So many people in the US don't even know who Audie is or what he did.

Two fun facts about Audie Murphy.
Look up a picture of the man. You’d expect Steve Rogers. You’d have all the valor of Captain America in a MUCH tinier package.
There’s a reason it even made it into the song.
Audie told them to tone down the REAL LIFE events of the movie because he thought no one would believe them.

Audie Murphy was a very big Western movie star and many of his costars were afraid of him because he would mock their fire fights, fist fights, knife fights, etc.
He also carried a pistol with him at all times with the bullet he was quoted, “saving it for the demons that may come”
He was a very respected soldier by veterans and many in the military because he had asthma, lied about his age, and all he wanted to do was fight because there were many dying and he wanted to serve his nation.
He was a real captain america

He also had malaria for a good portion of his tour. He apparently got a lot of lucrative cigarette ad offers, but refused to do them because he didn’t want to set a bad example for children. Captain America without ever needing the super serum.

What a legend Audie was. First, battling through North-Africa and Europe. Then coming home to battle his demons he got from ww2, winning that fight aswell and making most of his life.
Also, I love the line "Crosses grow on Anzio". Battle of Anzio cost around 10 000 KIA for Allies and Germans combined. Total casulties were over 60 000 combined.

One of my favorite Audie Murphy stories. His squad was falling back when a german platoon attacked his regiment. Audie, climbed into the command turret of a burning m4 tank and fired the machine gun holding off the platoon by himself while his squad escaped. He won the CMH for that action. He was addicted to morphine that he was prescribed for the pain of all the war wounds he received.

    • @RavetsU
      @RavetsU 2 года назад +9

The melody to the song incorporates a very old timey Western film soundtrack vibe, playing tribute to Audie’s movie career. Obviously the big stand out note about his acting was that he played himself, but the majority of his filmography was Westerns, hence the melody choice.

Audie Murphy was by far more bad ass than any of us could ever dream of being. 3 Purple Hearts, the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross just to name a few of the medals he earned in the war. That's not including the two medals awarded to him by the French and another from the Belgians. Then to come back and go into war with his own demons, and win that war too...what a true American bad ass.

He lied about his age to get into the military at 17 and earned every medal in the military (not just ours by the way) by his early twenties. Imagine 17-22 year olds today doing this.
The title of the song comes from a movie Audie starred in himself. Clips of this movie are in Sabaton’s music video. Also many of the lyrics are taken from poetry that Audie wrote when he came back.
The melody is from the good the bad and the ugly. Audie starred in a lot of spaghetti westerns too.

The only man badass enough to play Audie Murphy in To Hell and Back, was Audie Freaking Murphy. He got into an argument with a Producer on the set of a movie one time. Murphy just GLARED at him. The Producer later said "That was when I realized that I was arguing with a man who killed more Germans in Combat than I've killed bugs on the freeway." The Producer quit the next day! Fun Fact, Murphy stood 5'5" tall in combat boots!

Funny, scary story about Audie! During some films, the director might ask Audie to look deadly. But, his deadly look was so scary that the director decided that Audie would scare the audience. So, they always toned it down. One of his most poignant moment is in the lyric video, when his friend dies in battle, and for a moment Audie looks somber and lost; then starts fighting again.
