  • RCIS interviewed award-winning Irish playwright Marina Carr on May 28, 2024.
In this interview, Carr speaks about the imaginaire, legends, and myths in relation to her work. As an Irish citizen, Carr comments on what the formal acknowledgement of Palestine as a state means to her and what that has meant for Ireland as a young Republic. She refutes the idea of the artist as a change maker amidst global crisis and shares her thoughts on the unimaginable violence that human history has witnessed over the centuries and continues to witness to this day. As a playwright, Carr is acclaimed for the mastery and grandeur with which she is able to write about tragedy; her version of Hecuba, has been described as an honest portrayal of war. The play originally written by Euripides, resonates with the current horrors of the war on Gaza.
Interview was hosted by the Director of the Research Centre for Irish Studies (RCIS) at the British University in Egypt - Associate Professor Rania M Rafik Khalil. Dr Khalil also holds the position of Acting Vice Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
