- Dion Poncet came of age in a place almost no one calls home. He was born on a sailboat in Leith Harbour, an abandoned whaling station on South Georgia island. His father, a French adventurer, had met his mother, an Australian zoologist, on a jetty in Tasmania while sailing his boat around the world. The couple started a family in the South Atlantic. For years they traversed the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, surveying wildlife in uncharted bays-seals, flowering plants, seabirds-with three boys in tow. Dion was the first.

Dion Poncet wants people to understand that what happens to Antarctica can have a significant impact on the rest of the world. What are your thoughts on his story?
It's a unique story. Thanks for sharing.
That the world is changing all of the time! Yes, we do affect the changes, but the world will rid itself of us eventually.
But,people are not interested to understand about their surrounding, but, while they realize to know and obey,it will become too late.
Fascinating story. I want to know more. Like have a 1 hour documentary detailing his life there and how he lived there. How and why is Antarctica changing?
People, stop consuming
Being one of the people who remembers how this used to look like and what it has become now surely breaks his heart. Pity, but I wish him well and thank you for all the dedication he's put almost all his life.
How's it changed, like biggest difference?
@ZombifiedFish right..
I viewed wikileaks pics of the continent recently interesting things going on down there
@@palmettolockzzyardi2235 wikileaks is more informative than a person who has lived there for 40+ years and goes sailing across the region, knowing the place like the back of his mind. Yep he knows nothing.
"Generally people won't be able to change their habits unless it has a direct effect on their day to day lives".
Most important quote in this video. It sums up the problem entirely. People thousands of miles away are simply disconnected and don't care.
It is really sad to watch this. My thumbs up is for the awareness it raises.
We agree with that sentiment. More people need to know about the state of Antarctica to get more people to try and protect it.
I remember when the plastic's recycle factory ruined my hometown lake. When I was child, in the dawn, there was fog in greeny grassy wet field that surrounding the lake. The water is blue and calm, you might smell the fishy water from a far. But today, it's change at all.. No more green grassy field surrounding the lake, replaced by black dry land cause of chemical waste, no more blue water in lake, replaced by green water lake, caused by green plankton that overgrown, no more fishy smell that I miss the most, because so many fish have died caused by greedy human. Thank you human... You're the smartest creatureand brutal creature ever all at once
Huge changes to everyone's way of living - across the globe - need to happen now. Even then it will take generations for humans to repair what we have done to our planet.
Remember:
We can't live without our world 🌎 but the planet would thrive without us.
🙏✌🏼🙂
We agree with that sentiment. It takes a global effort to make the kind of impact we need to save the environment.
@R T so caring about the entire planet is cringe?
It's a shame that us humans destroy what we need.
All it takes is a few wealthy groups to ruin it for everyone
Fake fa- oh wait this is a fact
Who is us humans?? You mean the government who has the authorization to have anything built? How TF is it a "we" thing like we actually control what the government does?
@@bossattack7105 the government is nothing without it's people, yes "we", we have a large part as well, we litter, we pollute by ourselves, yeah the government is a larger part but we are also a large part. Only way for the government to change is for them to open their eyes or for us to rebel as they are nothing without us
@@joshheinink and that's the problem, you guys think it's the wealthy, bad people, but the truth is it's us who destroy everything. Those wealthy people wouldn't exist if we weren't there, if we change our lifestyle, they'll have to change too.
Because where does their money come from if we don't provide what they need?
I find it hard to imagine that this dude grew up in frickin Antarctica
So he's technically the first Antarctic Native. And now his land is melting away. F
Nowhere near the first.
@@nepadron what do you mean?
There were people born before him on Antarctica
@@nepadron pls explain
[OCB] he meant other researchers kids
Amazing history. We loved the video.
I met Dion in Antarctica when he and his father visited us on the sailboat Australis. We had such a long and excellent conversation. He raved about his ship and the huge engine. I really wanted to sail with him one day. It is dead sad to hear that he has sold his boat and doesn't want to go to Antarctica anymore.
I wish you had shown more of what he was talking about ....saying that people are ruining it .
I Agree
It needs to be a full 1 hour documentary. Maybe more...
Commercial fishing is ruining the equatic ecosystem, and obviously climate change is accelerating the loss of sea ice, also impacting wildlife on both water and land. This isn't just his reality.
@SweatDeezTexas but when he said he hardly recognizes the place we thought he was talkin about physical changes also

what a wonderful childhood he had!
👍👌📹✋thnks for sharing 🙋......Amazing 🌏🌞
Beautiful place.
A profound tragedy.
Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
Amazing history, interesting
I didn't know there are places in Antarctica that people can live! I always thought it was only possible to be there as a tourist or as a researcher.
Lol no wonder we are an oblivious society.
"No humanslive in Antarctica permanently. However, about 1,000 to 5,000 people live through the year at the science stations in Antarctica." - Source wiki. Now I think this guy lived there because his mom was a researcher!
@@abe365 facts
Did you not watch the video he live there because his mom was a researcher....
@@KT-rk6fn That's not what the video said: he was actually born at South Georgia - a British island outside the Antarctic Treaty area - AND his mom was a scientist/researcher. They were probably sailing around there in a private capacity when he was born.
How very sad. Especially that people won't listen! Here is someone who has lived the wonder first hand! But because of the pain of watching it all slip away, he must in self preservation, now also, slip away. 😢💔
I wanted to see his reaction to cities and land

Always wanted to go to the north pool. Thank you for sharing. Beware of the ice bears !!!
Antarctica is at the South Pole. There are no bears there.
I thought this kind of person only available on movies
Oh my god so great place thanks dor sharing and what is this place?
I don’t know why but I just started crying when I saw the sea seals...

So sad😢
Wow
It's truly sad how shortsighted our legislators have been and still are.
Research the ‘Antarctica treaty’ people!
Anybody got to know about the team trees campaign?
That's so sad
Interesting
That's sad.
He must've eaten seal at least once...😹😹
I find it hard to believe Antarctica is AS IMPORTANT as the Rainforest.
If you're looking at specific ecosystems and biomes, than perhaps the tropical rainforests are more important than the polar ice caps. But our whole planet is interconnected, a one big biosphere, and causing a problem on one side of the globe creates another one on the other eventually.
@@Noukz37 That is very true. Especially if the ice melts. All that cold water in the ocean could actually cool the planet so that would be bad too.
Sadly, cows and goats are the main contributors of co2 but can’t stop the fact since everyone loves beef so much 😞
I just want to know why, we’re letting all of that fresh water melt into the sea. Why?
We're burning fossil fuels for energy, destroying forest ecosystems to make place for animal feed and make single-use plastic. That's the simplest way I can put it...
Because we all take for granted everything we have always had, that's why
We don't realize it's value
he probably thinks 40 degrees Fahrenheit is sweltering hot.
I bet he must have eaten a penguin at least once
Hahaha I also thought this 😂
I too had fried penguin on my mind during the show. He says you can't take anything from the land, but can fish. So fried fish it is...
The planet is doing fine.
The current ecosystem maybe not so much but once it collapses, another can take it's place.
There is high doubt wheither humans will be in it or not, but then again, it doesn't really matter for the planet. It will continue to exist just fine.
Imagine you leaving your country. The same applies for this antarctica guy who was born there.
I wonder if he's ever been to the great Antarctic city of Neuschwabenland?
We need the earth but remember this world can thrive without us....let Mother Nature remind us
How is he going to survive in the hot climate?
Literally is, us burning down our own house while we're in it!
God!!! Bring Back Life on Earth
No matter if you get rid of all the fossil fuels the ice is going to melt.
Politicians just want to raise taxes on gas, electric and products....every year.
But it will melt MUCH MUCH SLOWER. How convenient that you have a predominately selfish, nihilistic outlook. Hows that working for you?
Sad story indeed of our world. Our world has grown from bad to worse. Greed has over taken people. Only Heaven can save us now.
I did not know all this commercial fishing is allowed. That doesn’t make sense. A bit of a sad story. Wish him well!
No. Don’t leave babe.
this. guy should have been titanic drive r
wow wow I like
Idk how he does it I don't like the cold period.
Poor guy. How many boys can say they grew up in Antarctica? ❄ 🐋
That's because it's not true... Google a flight to Antarctica and tell me what you find... NOTHING, NO WAY THEY FROM THERE
@@bossattack7105 Good point, dude. There's a reason we haven't colonized Antarctica.
@@bossattack7105 Sorry what? Planes fly a couple times a year, mostly military ones that you obviously can't book on Google flights.
If you wanna go search for a boat or a travel agency that goes there.
Im getting tired.. Thats why i left the city left my job and live in a cave... Im tired of all the pollution this big factories that blows dark smoke in to the air.. It ruins the earth ruins everything..climate change.. A big problem..
Antartica use to have no ice at all 70% of the history of our planet. Climat is cyclic, get use to it... Now does he mean polution and tourism is changing that bay? The info is far from clear in that video ! For sure corporations will abuse the fishing...

Logic or reason, has rarely if ever been used to 'adjust' human behaviour, sigh! Humans don't need to eat these animal foods.

I bet not a single one of you in the comments will do anything about it, you just type something lame to try and sound like you care but all you will do about it is expect that someone else will fix the problem.

More than helping other people we need to help our planet, our oceans, our animals, our fishes. It's ironic that we hear Govt allowing to kill bears, wolves, deers and many more as part of population control, come one nobody is talking about human population control. We guys are on their lands they are not on ours. Its was never been only humans land, it's always been shared place for millions of species. Only thing can help this planet is to control our greed, population and our emotions to reach out to far remote places to destroy native organisms. Otherwise End is near.
