Magnus: Dont necessarily come up with new idea.
Magnus in games: Remembers the moves from the game played in 2000 BC in same position.
Yeah, that's his point. He have an incredible memory, but he doesn't come up with entirely new ideas too often. But, to be fair, chess theory grew up so much that it's harder to come up with new ideas than it was 50 or even 100 years ago. Also, everybody uses computers now to prepare, and it makes it even harder to create something new on the board.

@@84y87 doesnt have anything to do with genius
@@sathishtamil7481 To be the best at something, you'd have to be genius at that thing. It's more or less a fact.
@@84y87 not true , ivanchuk is much more ofa genius than carlsenbut he is not the best , even a friend of mine who i am very aware is a genius ( he passed both IIT which is the toughest exam in the world and neet exam with little to no effort ) gave up on chess after 2300 elo ( he gained this elo only spending several hours a year in chess ) . sure you dont need to be genius to top at chess , its more of hardwork
@@sathishtamil7481 How can you say Ivanchuk is more of a genius than Magnus ? One can obviously be good at something either through talent or through hard work ... but to be the best, he would need BOTH. Your friend being able to crack IIT-JEE and NEET doesn't necessarily indicate he would be equally genius at chess too.
I think magnus can give himself a 9 in genius. Like if he is an average gifted dude (like other prodigies in the chess world) and not a Kasparov level type genius, then it shows hope that you can be one of the most unbeatable greatest chess players with a whole lot of hard work, starting young, memory and persistence to constantly learn new games, which is what magnus does.
He’s definitely very influential, specially with younger chess fans
Genius: 10 entertaining: 9 influence: 10 Sanity: 8
Where is the playlist with all the videos for every world champion he rated?
Yeah, he was too humble on the genius part. Dude, every living chess legend knew you were going to be one of the all time greats from the first moment they played you.
You just gotta hear what Kasparov, Kramnik, Polgar, Anand and such had to say about Magnus when he was just 15.
10 in everything plus in music 10
If Magnus scores an 8 for genius, how the heck are you supposed to get a 9 or a 10 lol
By creating new ideas, new lines, by not just riding the wave but being way ahead of it. He gave Anand a 9, Kasparov a 10 and cited Capablanca as the most genius world champion. Remember that chess is like science, you don't reinvent the wheel, you build upon what already exists. Any modern scientist surely know more about physics than Newton, doesn't mean the guy wasn't a genius!
@@miinh1067 ngl pretty good reply 👌
In short be Alpha Zero
@@miinh1067that's what the influence category is nice job explaining it 🤣
@@miinh1067 Conversely it doesn't mean that people should not consider themselves a genius based on people in the past developing strategies which were innovative. Magnus is still a 10/10 genius and you'd be strange to think somebody could have dominated chess in the manner he has, when chess is no doubt at the peak of its player count, without being rated as such.
Considering rates of other players, for ineself he rated it perfectly as if someone else would. It shows a lot that he is true to himself and the situation and that is about the most important thing in battles too, to use the absolute max without mistakes or going over the limit, perfectionist with ego in check. Suprisignly this might be 0.01% of earths population style and personality in general, because a lot of people (maybe 10%) are perfectionists, but egoistic ones

i think magnus genious is 10,
and for influence. I would give him a 10. Cust he is the one every one whats to beat. He basically is the meta chess. But I would give his entertainment a 7. For me Michail Tal is a 10. Magnus play way to safe.
Magnus giving himself a Genius "8" lol
Only he can put Magnus Carlsen an 8 in Genius 😛
I think he scored himself a bit low here. Probably out of modesty. While Magnus probably has not brought the most new things to chess I still would say his genius score should be atleast 9. Most of his games are entertaining and most of his draws probably are results of his opponents playing as carefully as possible so also 9 there I would say. Influence is definitely too low there as I recon Magnus Carlsen being one of the biggest reasons for making chess more and more known and 'mainstream' so atleast 9 there aswell. I agree with his 9 on sanity there.
Magnus 'perfected' what Kasparov started, I would say. Kasparov at his best was almost as highly ranked as Carlsen and Kasparov did it almost without computers. Carlsen continued from that point and with computers raised himself slightly above that level.
This is just a humble opinion from a 1900 rated player and not meant to bash anyone.
very self aware
Greatest champ ever.

In terms of modesty we can rate him... A 10.
I will grade my performance along side the world champions as: genius….plodding, mechanical, usually devoid of inspiration or ideas, basic calculation only…1. Entertainment: generally like watching paint dry, at best like being defeated by an absent minded boa constrictor…1. Influence. No influence on the chess world whatsoever. 0. Sanity. Quite well behaved over the board. 8.

I rank you 10,10,9, 7
So who tf is 10?
Entertaining should probably go down 1 or 2. As a person he's very entertaining but game wise... not so much. Lots and lots of draws in the WC... plays very long endgames doing his best to squeeze a win out of the tiniest of advantages, its very boring to watch. And also accepts draws or plays for draws early on positions which is why we get so many draws between GMs now.
You contradict yourself. Magnus rarely goes for a draw and will try to eek a victory out of almost no advantage as you point out yourself. His classical chess is not boring but his opponents are super booked up. This is the price of being in the computer era where Magnus has to play against Stockfish for the first 15-20 moves! These days players don't fall for tactics easily and are experts in positional chess. This is precisely what Fischer reckoned would happen due to computers. In fact, Magnus prefers Rapid and Blitz for the simple reason that he forces people to play chess on instinct and not on book knowledge alone. Magnu's blitz and rapid play is exhilarating. Dr. Drunkenstein and Dr. Nyksterstein are legendary and so is streaming legend with two or more friends in the back spectating.

Such a Humble CHAMP. That's why Magnus is unique in terms of his character.
@@pants1359 I would still call him humble. He is by no means diminishing his own chess greatness and skill, but that makes him honest, and not non-humble. He seems like a really nice dude that's completely down to earth and not arrogant, doesn't think of himself as more worthy than others as a person just because he's better at chess. That's what makes him humble
@@pants1359 The only instances I see him not really being humble have been intended as a joke it seems, I would say the scores he gave himself weren't necessarily that inaccurate but definitely modest to say the least.
Humble? Hahaha he just rank himself ahead of others he’s a dumb ass
@@jeremymarksandoval3320 but he is ahead of others lol, and that's obvious to everyone
He is highly critical, but is evidently not humble when you see how he assessed other legends. He gave Bobby Fisher a 7 genius rating (🧐). He gave himself an 8.
(Context: Fisher had a reported IQ of 180 and was undoubtedly genius…. Suddenly Carlen’s ratings don’t seem that “humble”. If he doesn’t consider himself or Fisher to be genius, then I’m not sure how he even defines the concept tbh🤷🏼♀️)
This is me in job interviews
Magnus is probably the only player I'd say is more naturally gifted than Kasparov. He's an 11 in terms of genius.
I think Capablanca was the most naturally gifted player ever, followed by Fischer and Anand. They came from virtually nowhere (chess-wise) and took the chess world by storm. Contemporary players - I'd say Magnus and Nakamura. Kasparov was immensely talented, of course, but I think he worked his way up to the top, just like other Soviet players.
Entertainment - a close shave between Alekhine, Tal and Kasparov (if we count only the world champions). I think Garry takes first place due to the longevity of his career and ability to consistently play top quality, highly entertaining chess over decades.
Influence - I'd say it is a tie between Botvinnik and Fischer. Botvinnik was the forerunner of the school of chess that dominated the world for more thank 50 years, and Fischer was the first one to prove chess players can be sport stars despite the "boring" appearance of chess to the general public. And, of course, both of them revolutionized the way the chess is studied - Botvinnik invented the opening preparation method that became the backbone of all contemporary chess theory, and Fischer deepened and perfected it. Current grandmasters all use Botvinnik-Fischer method to prepare for games, assisted by computers.
Sanity - I'd say younger/mid generation players hold massive edge in that one. People like Carlsen, Giri, Anand, Kramnik, Kasparov, Karpov...they all appear to be ordinary guys with extraordinary talent, rather than quirky geniuses with appalling political views like Alekhine or Fischer, downright mad people like Steinitz, Rubinstein or Nimzowitch, chronic alcoholics like Tal or nasty pieces of work like Petrosian or Korchnoi. Of course, Kasparov, for example, can be cantankerous and has held some strong political views but he turned out to be 100% right when it came to Putin, for example. From older players, I'd say Capablanca and Botvinnik were remarkably normal when it came to the real world (as opposed to chessboard).
And the best player ever - I think Kasparov, no contest. Magnus can overtake him if he stays devoted to (classical) chess and if he keeps his top form over the next 10 years, but for now - Garry takes the clear first. Third place - probably Fischer. He might not have had the longevity, but his 4 years (1968-1972) absolute dominance over everyone else was something unseen before or since.
On Influence I’m going to rate him a solid 10. He made chess interesting for youngsters and together with the rise of online gaming... chess is more popular than ever!
I could be wrong, but I think they mean influence within the game itself (like contributions to the opening theory), not the perception of chess by the general public.
Don't 8 yourself, Magnus!!! :D
Magnus actually thinks much higher of himself than that, but he's enough of a good player to know that if an opponent puts you in a "rate yourself" check, the "false modesty defense" has a much higher success rate than the "honest pride attack".
Nonsense, he is just great at analyzing, even himself.
Hahaha
Really funny
Magnus is very open about his lack of humbleness and modesty, so I think he geniunly believes what he says.
He's way too modest. He should absolutely be a 10 in genius. There's a reason why people always call him the endgame genius and joke that he squeezes water from rocks. Dude squeezes out a win even when the computer says it's a draw. Multiple people have said that even in weird ass endgames that no one would ever study because it's just so odd, he's able to completely understand them and play the positions flawlessly.
10 is the perfect score. You can't score higher than 10. So it should be given to something or someone who basically solves the game, which hasn't happened yet. So even computers can't be rated 10.
@@aryavart296 if you're a 9.5 or higher that's arguably a 10 rounded up though
First, if he is not a 9 or a 10 in genius, then I don't know who is!
Second, 'squeezing a win' when the computer says it's a draw is because his opponents are NOT engines!
With perfect play, yes, the games should be drawn. But human players make mistakes, especially where precise calculation is still needed.
@@nickel4thoughts Kasparov is a 10

@@EGarrett01 bruh whats your problem , fischer spent his life upto 30 year age by sitting in a room studying chess all day . other soviet players actually had a full time job instead of just chess

Good.
But we all know: 10 - 10 - 10 - 10
On genius, Magnus should be a 10
No, there have been players who are more talented than Magnus, such as Bobby Fischer. An 8 is probably fair. What you should really be complaining about is Magnus's entertainment grade, which really shouldn't have been any higher than a 5.
@@maxkho00 I am not complaining about anything - merely stating my assessment. On entertainment, I think the 8 is fair - he has a huge fan-following on chess forums (this was true even before he became world champion) and his games have more spectators/ comments by far than any other contemporary player.
@@maxkho00 He gave Fischer a 7 in genius though.
And Magnus' games have been decently entertaining for me.
@@maxkho00 Fischer was a world champion that could not defend his title. American propaganda in the cold war was what elevated him. He was extremely good and a pioneer no doubt, but I feel he's being overestimated. I rate Kasparov and Morphy over him imo.
@@maxkho00 it’s so difficult to rate players of different eras. Some statisticians say it’s impossible. Fischer was extremely dominant during his brief time, and he may have the strongest one year peak metric. How much longevity factors in is subjective, but could easily lead someone to say Kasparov was the strongest player of all time.
Some people also look back historically and compare players based on how close they were to computers. This has its own set of problems but it’s the same players... Fischer, Kasparov, Karpov.... And Capablanca as the closest to computers over a 15 year span.
The newer computer based metrics that have been carried out though rate Carlsen as the strongest player of all time. This makes sense as the access to computer analysis has increased overall player strength. How this compares to Genius is another issue. One could argue Morphy was the most “genius” player of all time simply because he didn’t have anyone to learn from. I think ultimately Magnus will be regarded as the #1 player of all time due to the computer metrics, his being the most accurate player ever, and also being dominant for a “long enough” period.
I’d go with 9s across the board. And in twenty years history will rate Genius and Influence as 10s. I think he has won so much people have begun to take it for granted and forgotten how difficult it is to keep this level of play for this amount of time.
Gary won more, and had a way bigger influence over the game, entertainment wise they're similar imo.

we want anish comment ... right now right here
I would rate him 10, 10, 8, 9 lol. And 9 as a top score for “sanity” because no real competitor is truly sane.
We have to face the facts that strong players have to play so much according to computer analysis in the openings. Magnus I believe just wants sound playable positions where hopefully he is able to outplay his opponent. He doesn't want a lot of forced computer lines where you could lose to a ten year old with a good memory. I think Magnus plays a bit like Karpov and doesn't play too risky. It is harder to play like Tal today and be successful with all the computer analysis and also that the best are really able to defend well.
