Those are not extension cables. They are Low Noise Adaptors (LNA) for reducing fan speed for 3 pin fans.
And I read someplace they could help with compatibility to the Synology's variable fan-speed implementation. I need to research this more though.
My original 920+'s fan number 2 just died, after daily operation for 2 years 5 months. Technically it is under warranty. HOWEVER this and other similar videos have convinced me to splurge on ... fancy pantsy fans.
Fancy pantsy fans ... felt good repeating that line, yeh.
Also going to try the "velcro" fix too, laying the furry side of velcro tape underneath each drive rail, in hopes of minimizing noise. I currently place 1' worth of books on the top of the unit to weigh down the noisy vibrations, so that could be improved with the velcro fix -- I hope.
Techno-dad-on, man.
Well, It works great.
Installed velcro and two new fans, and the fans are running + it's quiet. Set it to cold mode and I've got no bleeping errors 🙂
Mission accomplished.
RTFM!! You should have used the 'rubber' items 3:52 instead of the screws to hold the Noctua fans in place. They 'dynamically' attach and dampen, thus reducing fan noise.
I would say you are probably right, but at 5:58 there are a couple of odd black brackets that locate on the fans. I wonder if those brackets are to provide stability to the enclosure when adding/removing drives. If so, then the fans would have to be firmly attached at the other end and the rubber mounts would not be suitable.
The rubber things would not fit and the brackets isolate it.
Now do the Velcro mod the Yoga matt mod...
A terrible guide, if you can even call it that. It doesn't explain how to connect the power cables and if you need an adaptor or not, other comments seem to suggest the anti vibration mounts can be used or should be used instead. If you are gonna do a video at least do some homework and try to talk through these things. I am not much more the wiser after watching it to be honest.
Ps- I'd recommend taking out any m.2 ssd's first so you don't catch them and also unscrewing the fan screws BEFORE the fan harnesses because if done the other way around the nas rear case can be bent easily while unscrewing.
