Just rode this again after 9 years. Still an excellent ride in the back. It felt nearly pitch black which really enhanced the ride. I hope after Tron is open for the a few years they'll consider a complete retracking or a near complete rebuild that will introduce 2 across seating. The lack of a single rider line is so frustrating. Saw so many trains with an empty seat roll by after an already 50 minute wait with another 30+ ahead of me.
Space Mountain is definitely that stepping stone roller coaster for many people. Its a fun, fast-paced thrill marvel, besides the stats. During my college program, I would marathon it if the line was not long or fastpasses were available. I do hope one day Disney will be able to give some more TLC because the track can get rough, and it feels like the trains would benefit from a possible redesign for better capacity. Overall, this coaster is a very important piece of Disney history, and is worthy of the love it gets.
This is the only Space Mountain I've ridden. People familiar with the Disneyland version usually seem to hate it. I think the janky, jerky quality of it makes it kind of exciting, and I love the elaborate theming in the queue, light tunnel and lift. It's probably my third favorite Disney coaster, but I'm fond of it.
I already have a review of the one in Paris. I want to review the one in California, but I haven't been able to find a high-quality lights on POV that I have gotten permission to use. I want that to help on that ride.
Best queue line of all time. The build up is so intense as your u are making your way closer and closer. I still have flashbacks when I was 6 years old, coming out of the tunnel seeing the meteors flying around from above and thinking here we go there’s no turning back now lol
Having just produced a video on the Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain, RUclips recommended this video to me and I can see that I was a month late. I enjoyed your video and I promise that I didn't copy yours, because I can see that I somehow managed to emulate a lot of your same points 😅
One of my favorite details on this ride is in the queue. There are several signs showcasing the various destinations that you can travel to. From what I saw, all of them are real celestial objects found in the night sky (I’m an astronomer, so I was geeking out a little)
Last time I was there, I got to ride it as the last day of Deep Space Mountain before they switched it to Christmas. That was awesome! It was pitch black and i was in the back car. Every drop was ejector as we had a heavy Train!
I went on this a few months ago, im a small person so in the back I went FLYING, the 4th drop LITERALLY flew me out of my seat, I was laughing so much!
Dude I like this review!! Im a little late, but this video is soo good! Keep up the work. I came here after I rode this with a high up restraint, and on the pops to the brake run I got serious ejector airtime, and the low to the ground turns were pretty intense too. Great work !!
This is definietely my favorite roller coaster in the park. It will be interested to see however if that changes once they open TRON: Lightcycle Run right next to it.
I rode this almost 9 years ago, the omega side based off the faint memories I still have of it, and I remember it being a decently thrilling ride but nothing rly crazy, just a step up from an arrow mine train
A lot of the older Arrow mine trains are known to have a drop that launches you (ex. SFOT's Runaway Mine Train, SFSTL's River King Mine Train, Big Bad John). The 4 drops feel like those drops.
I've ridden Space Mountain more than any other ride at Disney World, and I've only gotten a partial lights on when the people mover broke down (which I honestly think is cooler than when Space Mountain itself breaks down) Disney does need to fix some of the speakers along the ride tho. Great video!
when i went to reride this last year i got some insane ejector on all the drops in the back row. the 2nd drop definitely had the strongest airtime though
About Space Mountain's track... it was supposed to be completely replaced in 2009, but it didn't happen because of budget cuts. If you happen to get a ride on the Peoplemover when the lights are on inside Space Mountain, you'll see spray paint marks all over the supports. The spray paint is there from 2009, indicating which track and support beams would be removed in a specific order. The reason why Disneyland's Space Mountain had its track replaced is because the original trains were retrofitted with an on-board audio system in 1996, which made the trains much heavier than originally designed. The track and supports that were in the mountain at the time were not designed to take the added weight of the on-board audio system, which in turn caused them to wear out prematurely. For this reason, Disneyland's Space Mountain suddenly closed on April 10, 2003. It has been said that if the ride was allowed to operate any longer, it would've lead to a complete structural failure sometime that day.
I might be going to Disney World Next Spring and I’m excited to ride Space Mountain it’s one of my bucket list rollercoasters. It definitely feels faster than 28 Mph and the drops are small but pack some serious airtime on them. That is something I’m looking for on a rollercoaster. I am disappointed that Splash Mountain will be closed when I visit because it is arguably the best log flume in the world and possibly the best ride at Magic Kingdom. I do wish Space Mountain had larger drops and a higher rate of speed that would have been even better.
I think Disney World's space mountain would easily be #1 if they retracked it, added onboard audio, and updated some of the outdated effects and props (the lift hill scene has such a better effect on the Disneyland version). The general scope of this version just feels a lot larger, like with the ending ramp scenes. They need to re-install that moving walkway though...
I agree this one would easily be the best if it was retracked and got onboard audio. I could see that happening after Tron opens to lighten the load on it.
Disney should do the following: redo the theming to make it seem more futuristic, retrack the whole ride (without changing the layout) and raise the top speed to up to 40 mph by semi-deactivating the block brakes. This would bring Space Mountain up to a much better thrill!
Well, Tokyo Disneyland is doing this (redoing the theme, retracking, and improving speed/thrill). This should influence both Magic Kingdom and Disneyland!
I've noticed that many non-enthusiasts believe that Expedition Everest's dark backwards portion goes upside down, too (it does not--it's a drop and a helix). Dark coasters can be very disorienting if you don't know what to expect.
Haha, Even with its massive 183 dome, there is still 4 more Coasters in Florida that are taller than Space Mountain, and yes that include Expedition Everest with its 199 ft Mountain. Also doesn’t the Track look somewhat like Arrow Dynamics or Vekoma Track, since Arrow built Matterhorn Bobsled
I had just revisited WDW last February. Hadn't been in over 28 years. When I rode Space Mountain again there was a very nostalgic feeling but also I thought, "this is the same old crappy roller coaster I rode when I was 7. It hasn't changed a bit. Still can't see anything but a swirly haze of star projections, still was afraid my glasses were gonna fly off, still the same two upside-down astronauts." To be honest the que was dismal and seemed to be missing something (like it's soul.) I guess RCA took Space Mountain's pre-show soul or something. The post show was much better and I noticed a scene from the sadly defunct Horizons ride. I really like the concept for Disneyland Paris's Original Space Mountain with its original Jules Verne theme not the Star Wars overlay.
This was coaster credit # 1 when I was 12 years old, and I hated it. My next roller coaster wouldn't be until I was 18. If I rode it today, I'm sure I would like it. It might have been the rough/jerky factor that made me dislike it back then. Star Tours was pretty much my motion limit at that time.
I was terrified of the ride since I couldn't see what was going to happen, but I was able to conquer it. I couldn't say the same for 2 other rides. 5 year old me didn't want to get turned into a ghost on Tower of Terror or literally shrunk on Honey, I Shrunk the Audience.
I'm in the minority but I prefer the Florida version to the California version. The California version is better in almost every regard. The theming, the effects, the queue and the smoothness are all better in California. But I prefer the layout of the MK version. I enjoy the drops and laterals which just aren't present in California. I wish you could get the great MK layout with the California aesthetics and smoothness. And while I typically prefer theming to thrills, I think the layout in Florida is just that much better. Plus it still has pretty good theming all things considered.
I really wish they’d do a complete rebuild using the existing layout and add some brand new effects and soundtrack to the ride. As it is right now, it’s kind of rough and outdated compared to the others. I still think I prefer Disneyland’s over this...and Paris as well.
This is because a small section of the Peoplemover goes through Space Mountain. In that instance, not all of the lights are turned on, but enough come on to illuminate the layout.
I like this ride, but it’s getting a little rough. Plus, the constant trimming irritates me. I know why it’s there because you know, capacity, but it is still frustrating.
It’s the worst, followed by hongkong & Tokyo, second best is Disneyland’s , the best is the original version of Paris’s space mountain; space mountain de la terre a la lune. The hyperspace Paris version is awful, i consider it worse than Disneyland’s and almost as bad as Hong Kong’s and Tokyo’s.
Are you not a fan of the theme on the one in Paris? I have a review on that coaster. I love the new trains, but I wish I could have experienced the old theme.
@@CanobieCoaster i just don’t like any hyperspace mountain in general as the main reason space mountain is good is that it’s soundtrack matches the ride pace, whilst hyperspace matches the theming instead of the layout. Along with the screens and projections creating too much light, which ruin the atmosphere.
I also think that it’s terrible that for the anniversary of that the Paris version they changed it to a permanent overlay which is vastly different. Hong Kong’s is also permanent. Space mountain is a flagship attraction, changing it to be themed to star wars when there is star tours in the same land is just excessive. And also star wars and a giant x wing do not fit in with the Jules Vern theme of discovery land.
Especially Disneyland when it last had hyperspace, they had it longer than haunted mansion Holliday which is absurd, there was only around 4-6 months of the year that it didn’t have an overlay. Disneyland has the tomorrow land plaza, with a Star Wars show, they had the Tomorrowland theater with a Star Wars production, they had star tours, they had Star Wars launch bay, they had star trader, almost half of the land in tomorrow land was Star Wars at one point.
Just rode this again after 9 years. Still an excellent ride in the back. It felt nearly pitch black which really enhanced the ride. I suspect this ride will need to be retracked based on the number of cycles.

Overall, this coaster is a very important piece of Disney history, and is worthy of the love it gets.
I imagine they will have to do a full track replacement like the Disneyland one someday.
Would you recommend it as a first step coaster to someone who is terrified of coasters?
This is the only Space Mountain I've ridden. People familiar with the Disneyland version usually seem to hate it. I think the janky, jerky quality of it makes it kind of exciting, and I love the elaborate theming in the queue, light tunnel and lift. It's probably my third favorite Disney coaster, but I'm fond of it.
I like the airtime myself.
Ayyy a review on a coaster I have actually ridden 🔥
It happens!
So true
I remember riding space mountain, I loved it actually not because of the indoor aspect but all the airtime and laterals that you don't expect at all.
It really catches you off-guard if you're used to the other Space Mountains.
Great review! Will you review the rest of the versions of space mountains you have experienced?
I already have a review of the one in Paris. I want to review the one in California, but I haven't been able to find a high-quality lights on POV that I have gotten permission to use. I want that to help on that ride.

No worries. I'm glad people are giving this ride the love it deserves.
This ride is awesome more parks need this.
Especially to offer an option in a storm.
This is one of the coasters that got me on into coasters and parks
I rode this at a young age too, but I was already hooked on parks.
One of my favorite details on this ride is in the queue. There are several signs showcasing the various destinations that you can travel to. From what I saw, all of them are real celestial objects found in the night sky (I’m an astronomer, so I was geeking out a little)
That is a neat detail.
I have ridden this version. The airtime is insane!
It does have good airtime.
I love this ride so much! It’s such a classic!
Agreed!
Last time I was there, I got to ride it as the last day of Deep Space Mountain before they switched it to Christmas. That was awesome! It was pitch black and i was in the back car. Every drop was ejector as we had a heavy Train!
Heavy trains really make a difference on both Space Mountains in the US.
I went on this a few months ago, im a small person so in the back I went FLYING, the 4th drop LITERALLY flew me out of my seat, I was laughing so much!
It's surprising for a Disney coaster.

This ride has some of the best theming for the queue, the ride, and the exit
Sure does.

Even a partial lights on ride is neat since you can see just how minimal this ride's clearances are.

Fun fact: space mountain has fans that blow at you to seem like it’s moving faster than it really is
California's is most notable for that.

Even when it opened, the cars were pretty comfortable- apart from the fact that you could be sitting in a strangers crotch or vice versa! lol
