  • I like dark truths as much as the next person, but The School of Life's new video 'Dark Truths To Cheer Us Up' is biased, inaccurate, and unhelpful. Let's get critical about this channel's mass-production of reactionary misanthropic bitterness.

By the way, when I said the Warriors won last night, I meant on Friday night, the night before I filmed rather than the night before I released this video. Sorry for any confusion there.
Oh and also at 29:10 there's a bad cut lol, I messed that one up, that's a big L for me as an editor. I just cut out the part where I invite people to give me money on Patreon, woops. Anyway you get the point.

There's a middle ground between toxic positivity and relentless negativity and School of Life clearly does not understand that.

I used to like their videos (hadn't seen the more problematic ones) until I saw the one on why some countries are poor. I think they've taken it down but it was absolutely disgusting.

School of Life is such an awful channel, and Alain de Botton is such an awful person. We had to read one of his books in high school (The Art of Travel) and it was the stupidest, most vapid book I've ever read. I disliked some other books we studied, but I could at least see the appeal they just weren't my cup of tea. His book, I couldn't possibly understand the appeal.

I'm glad I happened to be such a fan of a certain TV show that you've been covering lately because it led me to some of these other videos that are completely way off from TV character studies--which were great on their own. Quite shocked to find out how small of an audience there is here at the moment. This is fascinating stuff to spend some time on. I hope you keep posting these thought-provoking topics; you're very good at presenting them and I can definitely see you as a great therapist.

I remember when I first came across School of Life’s videos several years back. At first I liked how they embraced the darker more pessimistic side of philosophy, but the more I watched the more their videos didn’t sit right with me but I couldn’t quite articulate why. You’ve done a great job in that articulation :)

This video being covered just makes me sad. The "hard truths" being spewed by "School of Life" are the exact thoughts and negative feelings that have held me down in life. They are my enemy and I fight them every day. Seeing that millions of people are heavily buying into this crap is horrible.

Never saw a school of life video but the guy is not well adjusted and 99% of his "facts" seem like projections of his own issues and insecurities. Most people have more than 3 friends during their life. Most people can feel happiness without an accompanying sense of 'the other boot dropping' immanently.

why does everyone need to be a complete friend? Mutual friends exist and are perfectly happy not knowing about their friends friends. Friendship is more complex than people think.

Of course 3 is a completely arbitrary number, but I think there is a nugget of truth to the 3 friends thing if we think of friendship in the most serious sense of the word. I can think of a couple of dozen people I enjoy hanging out with and have fun with but of all the friends I've had in my life, there are only 3 who I would take a bullet for.

I think it really depends on culture. I think if the competition is too high, like rat race, people will be under enormous pressure. People under enormous pressure will tend to view world more negatively. On the other hand, if people are happy about their situation, the they are likely to view world more positively. This is what I see from US and UK. Any way, It is really hard for a content creator to master the art of balance the negativity and therapy. So they may get a bit extreme. However, in extreme of positivity and negativity, I would choose the later. That is why I prefer school of life over North Korea.

(just spit-balling thoughts, why not..) "truths" from this angle that School of Life is coming from just seems so forcefully subjective--but indirectly, though; not directly... I don't think it's intended to be bad advice for a malicious purpose. I think for one to get to a lot of these principles and generalizations about life is probably just so pushed and disillusioned that they feel very compelled to consider of them as simple facts, as simple observations. I think it's far too difficult to not let our emotional reactions take over and most people can regulate them to a healthy extent. I guess this is their subjective truth. If they hoped to achieve anything with this video, maybe it isn't along the same path as most creators... like it's content 'to' some audience, not necessarily 'for' them.. if that makes any sense, anyways.

I just wanted to point something out about the music. Not only is it very manipulative, but it was likely written in the 20th century and passed off as an 18th century baroque piece.

Were I a more learned man I'd see some irony in there.

Yea that's really interesting, and something I think I forgot to mention in the video is there were like 50+ comments in the first few days on the video asking what the name of the song was, because people liked it and SOL for some reason didn't give it credit. My bad to not give it credit again!
