When faced with an issue where I needed to scan a screened halftone, if you have the capability to reduce by 5%, hardly noticeable in the final product, it should help to avoid 'Moire-pattern' on the halftones and give you a little more space to create a gutter for your signatures. I assume the re-print will be perfect bound.

    • @justaprinter

I usually combine the two PDFs (the grayscale and black and white one). I just delete the photos from the black and white and delete the text from the grayscale and then combine them. It takes some time, although with batch processing it's easier. I guess you can count it as a redesign if you've done this much work on the book.
You can also transform the text only to black and white in photoshop as a solution.

My assumption on the lack of folio sheets is that the bigger shops are gobbling them up for their 40” presses. Sucks though, because some textured stock they only sell in parents or 8.5”x11” and I try to run everything 12”x18”. So weird how just a couple of years ago this was never a problem.

The traditional headbands were less about structure and more about protecting the ends of the signatures. Since they were actually stitched onto the signatures and wouldn't move from their intended position.
I'm sure the glued ones are (or were? For my home made bindings I still put them) because books were supposed to have one and wouldn't look like a proper book without it?

    • @justaprinter

@Matias Tonazzi. Back in the last century, one of my student colleagues at The London College of Printing worked for a large binding company where they had various mechanised bookbinding lines. I'm sure he said that one of their machines could apply "dummy" headbands (not sewn on) to the book blocks. The headband material was fed from a roll, glued on to the head and foot of the book blocks, and then cut off to size. The idea was to make a mass produced case bound book appear more expensive. Can't remember the name of the machine line. Could be one of many names - Kolbus, Muller-Martini, VBF-Sigloch? Stay safe and well.

Paper shortages in cut sheet and especially in rolls are prevalent across the entire domestic US market. There are US mills auctioning off their available tonnage instead of taking orders from long standing customers. I believe more mills will either be transitioning to packaging or coming offline by the end of the year - better stock up.

@@bergencounty6602 it’s a multitude of issues compounding where we are today. A big factor are mills retooling to satisfy different markets such as packaging, increase in marketing activity from a direct mail standpoint, overseas production had been on strike (Europe) or tonnage stuck in ports due to quarantines (Asia), COVID, difficulty in transiting goods domestically, etc. I don’t think anyone has ever experienced anything quite like this in the past 30 years or more.

@@DerpyMail I don't know, looks like a LOT of time went into cutting it and separating the pages. With the book scanner, it's just flip, click, flip, click. You can go pretty fast. That czur place has a video on their channel claiming to be able to scan a 300 page book in 7 minutes - I have no idea if that's a valid claim. Doing a little back of the envelope calculations, that's 150 page flips in 7 minutes (you get 2 pages per flip) - 2.8 seconds per page flip - seems pretty reasonable actually

Mac Paper and Verative are running at 25% availability on all paper stocks. I can’t get any 12pt 14pt 16pt c2s anywhere. Even 4over has cut way down on what they offer. So same as you, I’ve been running a lot more 8.5 x 11 which sucks! My contact at Mac told me the main paper mils in the states had gone out of business during Covid and a shipping container company bought the facilities and are using the pulp to make corrugated boxes for themselves. This leaves asia as a high production mil but they don’t want to ship to western countries because of cost. It makes sense because any paper I find is Sappi/Moorim or Pro Digital. I don’t see this issue getting better any time soon. What blew my mind as well is prices. I just ordered 1,000 12x18 sheets of 100# cover classic crest for $288! It used to be about $80! 😭

Would you need to take a book apart to be able to get a good scan of an art book? There is one page separate from the piece itself with the info about the piece, comments on it, etc., and the other side with the piece itself, but no backs of pages are wasted. The pages are also big, bigger than a novel at least, and glossy. Dimensions are: 9 x 0.9 x 11.88 inches
Unrelated to that but, I want to animate traditionally, and would I need a certain scanner to scan each frame, or is there another type of printer/scanner I would need?
    Many thanks.

OCR software has had big improvements as time has gone by. Also book scanners where you don't have to cut the book apart have also improved a lot recently. I have no actual experience with this product, but another channel I watch did a review on a large format book scanner recently, and the results look pretty impressive: ruclips.net/video/__D_icYubDY/видео.html. This seems like it's one of the rare kick starter projects that's actually not a scam. Things I'd double check though is if the software is fully self contained, and doesn't have any "cloud" connections, so even if the company disappears eventually, it will continue working - something you have to be careful about in almost every "cloud connected" bs product these days
