A lot of Sega CD games were the same way - low resolution low color (by modern standards) graphics paired with Redbook audio soundtracks played off of the CD. Bari-Arm (Android Assault), the Lunar games, Flashback, etc. and more had that.
... and to add to that, there was some of that with the Playstation generation too, but more Playstation games used the Playstation's sound chip instead because it was good enough and was more flexible than spooling music off the CD.
I’ve recently been trying out some PC Engine CD games, and it feels a little surreal to have high quality audio streams accompanying 16 bit graphics.
