Very useful. Thanks! It helped me to replace a key and a butterfly. It's very important to say that the mechanism is in some way pasted with a glue to the MacBook. So it's necessary to use something to re-glue again the key after the full replacement. I used a common Pattex Contact Universal. Just some drops, not more.
You can take a small flat screwdriver or a thin pry tool and go between the butterfly hinge and the clear plastic cap on the left side and pry the butterfly mechanism outward (to the left) and up, removing it without removing the clear plastic cap. This way, making the cap stick again or worrying about the adhesive isn't an issue.
Hmm. I had to buy a new butterfly switch because mine was broken, so I just broke the old one out. I am having hella trouble getting up the clear plastic thing. I had to re-reference video to know what to pry on safely. The tiny prongs on the edges of the butterfly clip are supposed to fit below the clear plastic cap sticker part and if you force any of these frail tiny parts, they break. I can't get the new butterfly clip to lay down without lifting up the plastic cap. I love the idea, tho. Need to study this a little. I think I am still going to have to lift up the plastic cap. Have really clean hands. Ok. I did it. I had to lift up the sticker. Only pry on the clear parts not the white bits. What worked best? My fingernail lifting at the 4 peggy corners. The 4 pegs stick back in pretty well, I don't think you need glue, but you do really need to take a little care to press them back in firmly, before going to the next step of the key cap. Fixed, tho!
Nice Michelle! Thanks! One thing I might point out is there is an adhesive beneath the clear plastic cap. When I removed mine the first time I think some of it came up so when I went to replace the key, it didn't stick immediately and the whole assembly came up. I was able to fix it just by putting it back in place and pressing firmly for a couple seconds.
This worked a treat for me! I learned a few things from fixing 10 faulty keys: 1: What I assumed was a residue caused by a spill is actually adhesive on the board to keep the mech in place. Unwittingly I removed it with switch cleaner only to have to source something to make it stick again! This was on my first key, I didn’t repeat that mistake! 2: Once the button was removed (as demonstrated on this video) I found it easier to pry the cap off from the bottom, using the lower fat part of the butterfly mech as a lever point. Less likely to damage the soft black rubberish bit on the top - essential if you plan to clean and reuse. 3: After I cleaned the contacts inside the cap and on the board with switch cleaner (leaving the adhesive intact this time!) I was able to reuse the caps instead of the replacements I bought at £4 each. Once cleaned, the old ones worked perfectly and stuck to the existing adhesive with no problems. Thanks for posting the video! I was going to buy a new top deck with keyboard at £150!so you’ve saved me a fortune. 👍🏻😀
