Since the beginning of the 19th century, human towers have been built in Valls, generally coinciding with the local festivities. Today this tradition has spread throughout Catalonia and part of the Levante region. Increasingly taller and more complex, the Castells defy gravity by creating authentic ephemeral architectures whose purpose, beyond the structure itself, is the cohesion of the different generations and social realities that make up the colla.
Once the festival is over, the Castells disappear without a trace. But the experience of touching the sky with their fingers, leaning only on their companions, remains forever in the collective memory of a people who will try to climb a little higher the following year.

The project "Raíces vivas" (Living Roots), under the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, creates a new audiovisual archive on intangible heritage. The author, Juan Rayos, is a filmmaker and makes documentary work that draws on contemporary narrative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and curated by Juanito Jones.
