The part about the couple you passed on the trail immediately reminded me of this time I was hiking with my dad in Alaska about 8 years ago. On the trail, we crossed paths with a newlywed couple, and we somehow struck up a conversation with them. I don't really remember much of what was said, other than the fact that they were from New Haven, CT and that they would be going to Badlands National Park a few days later. They were some of the nicest people I'd ever met, which is why I even remember the whole interaction in the first place. After that, we parted ways, thinking that was the end of that. Later on, we somehow met up with them a second time on the trail, talked a little more, and then said our goodbyes for real. My dad has always been very good at quickly becoming good friends with people he meets for the first time, and usually manages to get some sort of contact information like becoming friends on FB, but that didn't happen this time. To this day, I genuinely miss our friends we made on that trail dearly. It makes me wonder if my dad and I ever cross their minds. Wherever they may be, I hope they are living a good life and still making good memories together.
I don't hike often enough, but this really has the feel of going on a hike. Slow meandering along, just enjoying the scenery. The added camera footage is a really nice touch too! Going out and having something to look for adds a lot more purpose I think. It's just nice to know that something's out there and you might find it :D
I hiked near the Quabbin Reservoir around March last year right before the world went into quarantine, although I can’t remember the name of the trail. It’s crazy how much the world has changed since then, but nature doesn’t bat an eye...
Awesome that you got to have this experience. The more we open ourselves up to the natural world the more we are able to feel the pulse of the forest, the breath of the wind in the trees and grasses, the interconnectedness of all things. If your connection to the land was a strange woman on a trail and the echo of the woodpecker through the trees then awesome! Don't ever shy away from that feeling. The world is full of wonders.
That is a HUUGE downy woodpecker! I'm tempted to just say it was a Hairy, but I so want to believe it was just an enormous downy, complete with tiny cute beak and everything :)
@@TrentLenkarski I like yours much, much better - my stupid ornithologist brain is never invited to parties for this exact reason. :P I'm sure the ginormous downy is out there somewhere just waiting for you to find him! And is quite insulted that I called him a hairy. :)
This sounds like it was a fun, relaxing adventure. Quabbin Reservoir is beautiful, it was a nice visual addition to the story I'm looking forward to hearing more hiking stories in the future.
I think I must listen to too many lovecraftian things. I was waiting the entire time for the story to have some bizarre, surreal twist. I mean, with the title of the video, I half expected the woman to BE the woodpecker. Enjoyed it immensely even without the twist. Maybe that was the twist in and of itself.
I noticed you had the most calming voice and face I'd ever seen in some of those animations so I followed you here and god damn listening to these and watching your other videos put me more at peace than I'd been in hours thank you
Trent, your stories have been helping me get to sleep. I just wish they were longer - they sound slow and mundane but at the same time slightly surreal.
Great shots! It’s kind of a trip seeing local scenery on RUclips instead of California or whatever. Temperate forests are underrated! The forsythia are particularly nice right now. I’m just a hop skip over in New Hampshire lol. So by foot tall downy woodpecker.... Did she meant a hairy woodpecker? I mean they’re not a foot long but they look exactly like the downy only bigger. Pileated are much bigger but rarer and I wouldn’t exactly call them rhythmic. They’ll demolish a rotten tree! There’s others but they not just black, white & red so I think they’d be harder to confuse with a downy. Heck maybe it WAS a giant downy 😂 Woodpeckers are great. If you want to go on a real wild woodpecker chase, try looking for an ivory billed woodpecker! But if you see one don’t tell anyone 😉
I was waiting for the jump scare. The internet has taught me not to trust. All told, it was a beautiful story. There's another interpretation: The woman was the woodpecker. She was a shapechanger from times of yore. She meant no ill. She only wished that the man would partake of the sight of her plumage.
In one of HP lovecraft's short stories he talks about a valley outside of boston that was flooded because of the horrible events he outlines in "Colour out of space." I wonder if this is the landmark he is eluding to.
Next time you go to the grocery store, after you walk through the entrance, after about, I dunno let's say... twenty feet? Take a look to your left. You're going to see some carrots. You're welcome.
Woodpecker? Haha, what a silly made-up name. I think that lady must of been mistaken. The only bird that grows more than a foot tall in the woods of Massachusetts is a Metalmuncher. They sound exactly like a chainsaw cutting though a tree trunk but I assure you that is a common misconception. What would a chainsaw be doing in the middle of the woods anyway?? No, it's much more likely to be a foot tall metal beaked bird that screeches at 115dB & feeds on human flesh. Easy mistake to make.
If you don't mind my saying so, it sounds like that hike turned into a wild woodpecker chase!
I hope we find Woodpecker Jesus one day
Little do you know, the Woodpecker was told there was a strange man that could be heard up the trail. A magnificently bearded one too.
I am so glad you made this channel, listening to your stories is like sitting with an old friend reminiscing about the good days
This really reminds me of Joe Pera
I was expecting you to see the woman in a tree wearing a woody the woodpecker mascot costume
That young couple should be grateful that you immortalized them. That’s no easy task.
trent , you and joel are like wonders i thought i would never find on yt in 2022 . thank you for making awesome films .
I like this. No fancy rationale or feedback, I just enjoy the content.

2:35 Oddly powerful and thought provoking. Nice story.

Oh! Maybe! I like to think it was some mythically huge downy woodpecker! Still out there... Somewhere...

Could perhaps have been a Pileated woodpecker? Similar colours to Downy but bigger
You captured the spirit of something beautiful here. Immortalized it, and then shared that beautiful moment with us. Thank you for that.
thats the place where that one guy got stranded on a rock
This sounds like it was a fun, relaxing adventure. Quabbin Reservoir is beautiful, it was a nice visual addition to the story I'm looking forward to hearing more hiking stories in the future.
You should just take us on hikes and commentate 🖤🖤
Quite the nice "Joe Pera talks you to sleep" vibe I needed at this late bed-time hour here. :)

Your voice would be amazing for audiobooks, this was very easy to listen and space out to. The beautiful scenery definitely adds to that as well!
I love this style of video. Your voice is very calm and relaxing, and I think the world needs more of this vibe right about now
Yay i love hiking. This was such a nice little hiking story, you are a good storyteller.
Thanks!! Many more on the way!
you're very pleasant to listen to

Wow, that got deep... Love the nature shots!
That’s a nice story, thanks for sharing Trent
Sounds like a side quest in a indie explorer game...
Thank you woodpecker woman!
I love me a good trail that goes straight into the woods.
Your voice is so soothing and I love the silly twists. Very good stuff man
I liked this reminds me of nice stories headspace has. This was nice and relaxing. Thank you Trent.
Absolutely love this, can't wait for the next hiking encounter!
Best story I've heard in a long time. 👏

Now I want to start hiking
This is brilliant
Your voice is so soothing 🥰
Must have podcast version pleeeeeaaaasssseeeee. Reminds me of the Mike Rowe series where he does five minute quick stories called the way I heard it.
Really enjoyed this one, thanks for the story!
You have really good video titles. Makes them intriguing
beautiful
Nice and peaceful. Great work!
You’re amazing Trent! Please keep the stories coming

Another slapper of a video! Keep up the tremendous work, man!

Coincidentally 'Woodpecker Woman' is Track 3 Side B of 'Strawberries at Sunset'
Dude I've been watching survival videos and thought this was another one.
I get this "missed connections" craigslist post vibe out of this vid *thunk*
If you happen by any chans hike around Stockholm, i promise i will show you great spots for observation!
I feel like you'd make a great audiobook reader. I re-err listen to a ton of them. It was just a thought I had.
He wasn't shitting about that reservoir.
I always hear one in the woods, but I'm never able to spot it. Maybe it's the very same one?
You make me really miss living in Mass.
I'm close enough to there to go looking for it! I'll let you know if I find him
it’s like i’m really there...
Ok. Left you a like. Love you.

Pileated woodpeckers get bigger than a foot.
dryobates pubescens is the smallest in n. america
