    Why don't they write the degrees at the end of the pencils? Once it's sharpened to small, how'd you see the degrees?

      You throw it away. Unless, I guess, you’re the type of skinflint that uses a pencil extender.

    I have this same pencil but my set is a 24 set. My 8H & 9H are so scratchy and I cannot hardly see the 9H when I lay it down because its so faint in hue. The 8H&9H a useless pencil in my set. Thanks for sharing. I was nearly ready to give my set to someone else and buy something different. I still might.

    Another top review Harry! really enjoyed this one which is no surprise seeing as you reviewed my all time favourite pencil :) I have used Derwent Graphic pencils for over 20 years, I still have some of the very early ones with the straight orange band on the top, and were made in the old Keswick factory, some of those say "made in GT, Britain" while others say "England" ? anyway they are superb pencils that do the job, and do it well in my opinion. Glad you mentioned the Onyx, the one I have seems very light compared to what it says on the packet "Darker than a 9B"....I can't get darker than a 2B with mine, can you get super dark with yours? If you can maybe mine is from a bad batch?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 лет назад +1

      smoothie77 I had to go and check that out mate as I'd never compared them side by side and the Onyx is ever so slightly darker than the 9B. I've taken a photo but I'm not sure how to show you. My email is theartgearguide@gmail.com, if you drop me a line I'll forward this image to you and you can see for yourself and see if it is darker than yours.

      I recently got a set of 6 derwent pencils for $10 here in USA at Michaels. The pencils say made in Britain. It comes with a sharpener. Really lovely set. But it seems that the pencils' graphite rans out faster than other brands and require frequent sharpening. For some reason I see pencils by Faber castell and staedler that sell individually but not derwent.

    I have the 12 set of the Faber's...abd I swear they are the best
    Buttt.....I'm thinking about getting the light tones (the set picture here) of the derwents... because I only have a 2h as the highest in the fabers

    Thanks for this review Harry. I've been thinking about buying the 24 set for awhile now so I think I'll just get it. I love the Derwent pencils I've got a few sets and absolutely love them. I'm going to be a pain lol but I do have to ask about lightfastness, is that an issue with graphite pencils I know you did a review on another very well known brand and said that they were lightfast so I am just curious.

    Great video Harry! 😆 I have the older set of these. I don't know if it's the video or the new pencils, but the H's look about 2 -3 shades darker then I'm used to, though it could be just me. 😉 Also, based just on personal preference, it's easier for me to read the white lettering on any pencil than the ones that have the silver or gold leaf. I have to ask...why was it so important for derwent to go from the England to Britain label? After all of these years I'm just wondering why it would make a difference for them already being well established. I hope you are doing ok my friend. Talk to you soon. 🤗

      Valarie Connell /DrawingWithFire Hi Val, from what I can gather, the Made in Britain is a campaign going on here in the U.K. To maintain manufacturing here in Britain and to celebrate that status.
      You have to apply for the marque and there are a range of things your company must adhere to get the marque. The Campaign of Made In Britain will also help their members with spreading awareness etc. I'm not sure keeping the England marque, would have made Derwent lose sales or anything like that, but I just think being part of this new movement goes a long way to rejuvenating manufacturing here in Great Britain as opposed to out sourcing manufacturing in sweat shop in some third world country exploiting children. I hope this helps a bit Val, I too wondered what the difference was and it is difficult to get a straight answer from anyone on the differences. Chat to soon Val and thank you so much for stopping by.

      Gotcha Harry, thanks for the explanation. 😆 Something very similar that happened over here with the "made in the USA" label about 10+ years ago.

    Fantastic review Harry, thanks. For a good while now I've been swithering between whether to get the Derwent set or the Faber-Castell 9000. Can't make up my mind. These Derwents look good. How do you think they compare Harry? Best as always, Jane

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 лет назад +2

      Jane Kirkwood Hi Jane, it's a tough comparison, I have a 12 set of the Faber Castell 9000 and they are a really nice pencil as well, I will be reviewing them soon. But for me, I prefer the Derwent. If I were you Jane, both pencils are open stock, so I'd get maybe one of each in 2H or 2B. Or if you are not in a rush, wait until I have uploaded a my review and I will compare both pencils in that review side by side. Sorry I couldn't be more decisive on this one.

      Hiya Harry, that's great that you'll be doing a review of the Faber Castell 9000 soon and comparing them with the Derwent, super helpful, thanks. I'm not in any rush for them just yet, so am happy to wait for your review. Thanks again Harry :)

      Buy the Faber-castell 9000 pencils. The derwent pencils especially the 24 set he shows are crap , they are scratchy as hell. The new improved formula pencils , the 12 set he shows are supposed to be better. For me it's a no-brainer FC 9000's never had a problem with them.

    • @sergiopacheco2939

      Faber castell is really suitable for drawings that require precision or finer detail. And you get the same level of darkness, lines as long as you don't press too hard. I've noticed that with derwent the pencil can leave blotchy marks. The lead of faber castell also lasts longer and requires less sharpening. But I prefer the design of derwent and smell, and it has a lovely dark color, especially the 6b and 8b.

      Only for this 12 set, they have a 24 set that goes all the way to 9H to 9B or your can get one of the three 12 sets 6B to 4H or 9B to H or 9H to B. This way you can buy the graphite grade that best suits your work.

    the british flag is on all of them

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 года назад +1

      You are absolutely correct but at the time of this review, the British Flag had just appeared on this set and then it started to be placed on all of the pencils. I think some people weren't happy about this but I stayed away from political debate on the flag being on the pencils, I think one of the wonderful amazing things about art is that it bridges religion, race, political devide, sexual preference etc, we are all just wonderful amazing people who love to paint and draw. Art and Love

      @@sandywatson hi you are right I was referring to the water mark flag on the lower part of the tin. The UK flag, although small has always been on the Derwent Tins as they are a UK company. So when I spoke about the addition of the new flag on the front of the tin I didn’t really think at the time that it was a confusing subject. I try to be a precise as I can on my reviews and the only reason I even mentioned it was because I had seen a comment from a Derwent fan saying that they would not be buying from Derwent ever again because of the introduction of the British Flag. Had I not seen that comment I wouldn’t have even mentioned the flag.
