  • Sharks are some of the most fascinating, terrifying, and incredible creatures on the planet. Shark Week used to be one of my favorite events of the year, but it isn't what it used to be. Can we here at Clint's Reptiles teach you more about sharks in one 25 minute video than you would learn from an entire week of Shark Week? I think we can!

Clint! Why would you call my favorite marine animal something that "looks like an unholy hell beast"?? Frilled sharks are BEAUTIFUL my dude! Their long graceful bodies, being almost more eel-like than anything else, their massive eyes well suited to the near-total darkness of the deep, their red-tinged frilled gills looking like ribbons....And don't even get me STARTED on how COOL their teeth are! All those points, being almost crown-shaped, it's perfection. Just because they get the bends really bad at observable depths doesn't mean they're not beautiful. The frill sharks you showed were all in much too shallow water, and weren't showing off their beauty because they were feeling ill. It's like the blobfish fiasco all over again. Justice for the deep boys! Don't judge them on how they look near the surface!
(Seriously though, Frilled Sharks have been my #1 favorite ever marine animal ever since I first learned about them from a Scholastic book fair flash card I got in middle school. I want nothing more than to learn more about my weird and wonderful frill friends. So if anyone knows anything about them, please do share.)

Ooh! You should do one for carnivoria(if you haven't already, I can't remember.) Maybe split up the feliforms and caniforms.
Also, I agree about shark week. It's become all sensationalism, or trying to make some huge deal out of something that's really that. Though to be fair, it's not like we learn all that much about sharks(that would interest "normal" people) from year to year.

Trouble is, we don't even know for sure if a great white that big ever existed (the heaviest verified specimen is a little over 4,000 pounds). Compared to crocodiles, most sharks rely on how sharp their teeth are rather than on sheer bite force).

    @CharlieApples Год назад +2

Born and raised in South Florida, been diving with sharks many, many times. The key to knowing whether a shark _could_ be dangerous is their size; if the shark’s torso (main body) is around the same size or larger than your own, you’re in the “potential prey” zone. The bigger the shark torso vs human torso, the more likely predatory sharks will see you as maybe-food.
But if a shark has a smaller torso than you, it’s extremely unlikely to attack you unless you mess with it by touching it or bothering it. And then it would just be a “eff off bro” bite, not a “gonna eat you” bite. Because they wouldn’t kill and eat something as big as you normally.
This is because most free-swimming sharks of a large species (hammerheads, great whites, tiger sharks, bull sharks, etc.) go through stages of development where they first feed on fish and other small animals, and upon reaching full adult maturity and size, they switch to hunting primarily larger calorie- and fat-rich animals like seals, small whales and porpoises, large fish species, and so on.
It’s those big mature adult sharks you have to look out for.
Smaller sharks are amazingly chill and curious, and can even be very polite and friendly if they’re feeling you. They haven’t gone to the dark side yet.

I didn't know shark week had changed. That's disappointing, I grew up on discovery channel and animal planet. The message over and over was that sharks are amazing and not scary. I even remember a few episodes of someone coming on to talk about their shark attack and injuries and how they recovered and learned to love the animals again. Very wholesome. Ugh these channels have changed to something completely unrecognizable, most of them have such fake and sensstionalized content.
Clint, Im so glad we have someone like you. You are filling that void so well. I could easily see your channel being something featured on one of these channels when they were in their prime. You are like the Bill Nye of the modern era, bring education and hijinks to the masses. 💚

Great video, I love these kinds of taxonomy overviews which really help to untangle the tree of life for your viewers.
I did notice a couple small (and completely understandable) mistakes in the cladogram graphic:
For one, the shark pictured for Orectolobiformes is the leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata), which is actually a houndshark (family Triakidae) in the order Carcharhiniformes. What makes this mistake understandable is that zebra sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum), which are in Orectolobiformes, are also called leopard sharks in some parts of their range. Personally I think that S. tigrinum's adult pattern is much more leopard-like than T. semifasciata.
Two, the pictures for Carcharhiniformes and Lamniformes seem reversed, with the former having a great white (Lamnidae) and the latter some kind of reef or requiem shark (Carcharhinidae). Then again they convergently evolved onto the same pelagic predatory lifestyle, and white sharks do look a lot like bull sharks in particular. Plus the great white's species is Carcharodon carcharias, but it's not a carcharhiniform, which adds to the confusion.

I know the channel is called Clint's Reptiles but I really love sharks and how you explain and describe things with so much excitement and passion. I need more. 🥺💞

You talked a bit about them here, but i CANNOT overstate how much i'd love a video that went more in depth on the frilled shark, whether it was specifically about them or about hexanchiformes or squalean sharks as a whole! They're my favorite shark, and not nearly enough people love and apreciate them or even know they exist!

Sharks are my absolute FAVORITE! I used to get so excited for shark week, too, but it definitely has not produced anything great over the last few years. Just the same information with a different celebrity host and most of the content is about shark attacks or sharks in relation to humans.
This video had more information than years of shark week combined. Thank you!!

My three favorites are the shortfin/blue fin mako with those cute big eyes, frilled shark with the eerie swim style, and the thresher with the whip tail hunting method. I can't choose.
