How to Run a Mercruiser Boat Engine on a Stand or Outside of a Boat

- In this video, I hook my freshly rebuilt Mercruiser 5.7L (350) V8 boat engine up so that it can run on the ground, outside of my boat. The test was important so that I could check for any leaks and verify the engine was good prior to installing it into the boat. If there would have been a leak, I would have been able to fix it at that time instead of wasting the time and effort to install it. You need to hook up water, fuel, and battery so that it can run. Also, there are a few connections that need to be made to simulate being hooked up to the helm. Thanks for watching and I hope you find this video helpful!

Is the wire harness the same on all early mercruiser’s?
I don't know for certain but I would say if you're around my age of boat that they are very similar. This is a 1995.
@@605BOLT
I have a 94’ on my stand now so it’s probably the same. Thanks for the reply 👍👍
Oh nice. If you don't mind, comment back and let us know. Somebody else might be cruising the comments looking to know. 🤞🤞
@@605BOLT
Just ran my on the cradle and the pins are the same mine is a 92 thunderbolt IV 5.7
@@Matt82 excellent!! Thanks for posting back. Hope you have a great boating season. 🍻
Did you have your alternator hooked up? I tried this with my 2015 EFI Mercruiser engine and it wouldn't stop when I took cables off the harness. I think it needs to send the ignition to ground, when the alternator is on, no?
I don't know. Mine was just running bare bones. Its certainly possible that there is something more going on with the newer engines. You could always just disconnect the fuel supply or ignition source (unplug a coil or two). I've never tried this on a newer engine. Other than it running on after unplugging, did it work just fine?
What are the colours for the pins six and seven?
my Engine harness has. Letters.
I'm at work right now but maybe I can get you that info later. Should hopefully be able to find a diagram on Google or something.
Very cool step by step presentation.
Thanks for saying that. I hope it helps someone somewhere!
thanks bro. this helped me out man.
That's what I like to hear. Now for the install I assume!
@@605BOLT Well, I build/work on boats for a living (certified master tech, 8yrs now). So, I'm ashamed to say, that I didn't know which pins to jump etc on the older MCM's and etc. Lol
I've never had to do it, but came across your video randomly, and it couldn't have came at a better time to save me from having to look up the wiring schematic and etc myself. Lol
I'm fully restoring my own personal Sportcraft 270 (were on Lake Erie near Cleveland) and I just pulled another donor boat home that has the powerplant I want to use. It has an 89' MCM 5.7 in it that was dealer replaced only 79hrs ago!
So, I'll be pulling that motor and using the "pallet method" just like your setup here shortly, and so glad I ran across this video because it's gonna save me a good hour or two of troubleshooting, dicking stuff around, and figuring out which pins are what lol.
So, I'm very appreciative for the video and glad you put it out. Definitely subscribing and hopefully you can teach me a few more tricks and we can share some cool builds and etc. Hell, I may even start a small channel just to share my cool builds and teach in depth structural design and glasswork, who knows.
So, thanks again man!
@@strikeforcek9149 hey that's ok glad it helped. Nobody can be an expert on everything by memory. Be sure to mention if you see me messing something up.
@@strikeforcek9149 you definitely should start a channel! Very cool project you have too! There isn't shit for boat stuff and lots of people just need a little bit of info here and there. Cheers from South Dakota and the muddy Missouri River! 🍻
Do you know of the 454 7.4L would have the same start up procedure? I bought a boat with the 454 in it but the actual ignition switch is broken and I wanna see if the engine will even start up.
I thinking the mercruiser harness is universal at the connector so a boat can have a 5.0 or 5.7 or 7.4 plugged into it. Not positive but I think so. Maybe check on Google to see.
Nice video! - what about a 5.0 MPI - Will it be the same?
I can't verify with experience but I'd bet you lunch they're identical. Post up if you find out.
Perfect information so simple plug and play engine thanks
You're welcome Lukasz! Thats what I was going for, quick and easy!
Does that work the same for 305ci 5.0L V8 to start it
Pretty sure yes. Give it a whirl.
Only thing I don't like about this is no way to monitor vitals. Especially oil pressure!
😐
Well in my case I put it together. I checked the oil pressure with my drill and she was pumping great with good pressure. You could always run a simple oil pressure gage.
What about the pawer steering line how do have them connected?
No belt on the power steering.
does the fuel pump get powered as well?
This unit had a mechanical fuel pump.
Thank you bro! Have a nice day.
You're welcome. Boating season!
Glad I found this video. My Lund had a 4.3 that has cracks and got water. I pulled it and now have a rebuilt 5.7 going to go in. I'm definitely going to do this to verify everything before dropping it in. Thanks!
For sure! Better to check things out before you do all the install work. Plus its kind of fun to listen to.
@@605BOLT Of all of the things required, like cleaning out the bilge, installing outdrive, bellows, etc., hearing it run before install will be good motivation. Almost as good as eventually hearing it run in the lake! Crazy, I'm doing this for fun along with a PWC, Snowmobile, motorcycle, and square body Chev that are all in line to be worked on!
Boy that sounds familiar. One other thing I would recommend (you were probably going to do this anyway) is an oil pressure gauge just to make sure everything is good oiling wise; since obviously you won't have the dash gauge to reference. Plenty of projects it sounds like!
@@605BOLT For sure! Wife only goes along with all the projects because I'm out in the shop more rather than bothering her 😁

Is that a 305ci Chevy 5.0L
350 Chevy. But basically the same as 305.
What is the correct way for a 95 5.8 Cobra motor? Timing and the firing order and where should the rotor be pointing at? If you can help me out I appreciate it
Gosh I don't know. That's a Ford motor so I don't know if the harness is the same or anything. They might be the same but I just don't know for sure. I'm sorry. If it's a cobra I would doubt it will be the same but you never know.
@@605BOLT what is your base timing to start it? I can go from there I think you're firing order is the same thing as mine
ruclips.net/video/bHtDtcuM06Y/видео.html this video is the timing video. Shows base timing I think. Been a couple years already haha
Perfect info. Very nice.
Thanks!!🙏
really good video,
Thank you! Makes a guy feel good for sure. Hope your boat isn't giving you troubles!
Wow cool!
I should have borrowed your mechanical oil pressure gauge since you don't need it anymore. I'm sure you remember that fiasco with the corvette lol.
Cool trick!
Its easy!
Merci beaucoup ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for your kind words!
What size harmonic balancer is on that motor ? And what size is that motor .. thank you
It's a 350 (5.7L) but I don't know the size of the harmonic balancer. Sorry. 😬
@@605BOLT thank you so much .. one more thing what year motor ? I want to put the same set up in my boat
@@Badassbuilds777 this engine is a 1995 boat and Mercruiser parts that go with it. The block though is from a 1989 or 1990 Chevy pickup I think. 4 bolt main with a roller camshaft and hydraulic lifters and one piece rear main seal. 2 bolt main would work fine too.
@@605BOLT your super helpful man ..god bless .. love your videos !!!👍
@@Badassbuilds777 happy to help! If you have any other questions I'll do my best! 🍺

Tell me about it. Huge relief!
where do you get the courser for the exhaust?
Purchased the boat with the corsa diverters but that being said, I think they still sell them or someone does.
