When I read the title of this video, I thought the question would be about the classic Tele bridge with the three barrels. Us purists always have a hard time allowing for more modern solutions, even if they were incorporated by Leo Fender himself. So my Tele has a three-saddle bridge that someone modified so that I can set the intonation for each string individually. It works fine and looks "classic", but it's a little silly that we're so hung up on the "original" designs. My G&L Asat, which is a later design by the master himself, simply has six individual brass bridge saddles, and its intonation is always spot on.
Hey Kris! I know that you're flooded with comments on your videos, but, I just wanted to say that I've been playing guitar since I was 12..... I'm 51 now and it takes a certain player to make me feel inspired to play even more than I usually do. You....my friend are one of those people. I suddenly feel inspired to pick up the guitar every time I see one of your videos. I guess I just want to thank you for inspiring even older dogs like myself. Keep up the amazing playing and good work. Much peace and blessings to you!
I LOVE the ashtray bridge. Same as you, I anchor my pinky on the lower portion. The upper portion allows me to give the exact palm muting pressure without my palm getting hurt by the saddle screws. It’s the perfect bridge design for me.
Absolutely. Once you get used to it it becomes addictive. Fun fact, I just discovered that my pinky fingernail starts wearing through the finish under the bridge. It’s those little things that connect you with your tele. Gotta love them. 🙌
Hi Kris , the comment from Joern at 3:40 about the edge from the Traditional Telecaster bridge is right . The playability without the edge is much better . I love my Tellie and the three barrels is no tuning problem for me ,but at one point i was so frustrated about the edge that i give my Tellie to a guitar maker/Luthier who has done some things at this guitar. He took the egde away but he say it was very hard work . But the playabilty is much better for me. And guitar luthiers like Gerhard Schwarz offers the bridge without the terrible edge. I like your Fender Butterscotch Tellie Kris ; looks like mine but i got a Humbucker a the neck. Go on Kris with your nice Videos and best whiches - Udo
Hi Kris, I really like your videos, I decided to rebuild my Les Paul Junior from 2015 because of your video on the Gibson Les Paul Junior CM. The difference is so huge now and it's so much more fun to play it, it's really incredible. The rebuild was really worth it for me as I didn't want to sell it, but now it's definitely staying with me, thank you for saving my Les Paul Junior. Cheers, David
Very nice work! I have watched you for awhile as you give great insight to gear and you have fantastic chops. Keep it up…I’ll keep watching (subscriber)
Agree completely! My Gretsch single cuts look kind of like a LP, my MIJ Vantage Avenger is remotely like a Strat but none of them sound or feel like the originals! The differences are what I like about them! 😊👍
Another fan of your tone here, Kris. Please tell us more about that. I am on the brink of starting to play electric guitar again, which I quit years ago. Never considered a Tele before, but it turns out there are a lot of things to like!
My tele style guitar has the classic ashtray bridge, and my palm rests on the top edge, where it's really convenient to roll it over to mute the strings, and works as an anchor point as well. I don't know why it feels wrong to not have it on the tele, but isn't an issue on other guitars, but it just does
Woah! I made it on the show! Thanks for answering. My takeaway from your rough figures that you posted is that you can build a partscaster for about half the price than buying a prebuilt one? I know it depends on what parts you use but this way you can get everything you want. Thanks Kris.
Hey Allen, yeah pretty much. It really depends on the parts you use and how many steps it takes you to finalize a guitar (don’t ask me about the money I spent on modding my strat please… 😅). It can get out of control easily, haha!
Hey Kris, awesome video as always....I do have a pretty basic question, though....what strings do you use on your Troublecaster? I'm currently using D'addario NYXLs, but somehow that just isn't "the thing" and so I'm on the search for ideas...
funny, just found out that one of the reasons I love my Les Paul so much is that I constantly cling on to its absurdly high bridge pickup ring with my pinky and ring finger. I remember that I do the same on a tele with the ashtray bridge. Maybe not the best technique objectively, but who cares...
What is the first thing that you look at when u choose a guitar Kris? I'm more on to the neck, if I enjoy the neck, I'll enjoy playin the guitar. Btw, love that Kaslender pedal ❤
Wow, what an intro song. I mean it is really solid. You should make an actual song of it. By the way, Kris, I've heard so many great phrases by you and I am really wonder where are your songs? You have so many original ideas, you really should write some songs. I believe they would be mind blowing
Thanks a lot for the kind words! I promised to myself that I will write and record an album very soon. I hope I can get to it this summer and of course I really hope you’ll enjoy it.
First of all, many thanks for your Tele and other videos! On this topic, I am sure that Fender and Gibson wish they had copyrighted more extensively back in the day. I am not a fan of copies. I get your point, but I don't agree that, say, a PRS 245 is different enough from an LP. Why copy details like the basic old-style switch? Why copy the glossy neck? These are cosmetic and unnecessary similarities. Now, the Tele FMT HH special, that one we can say is "Fender inspired by Gibson;" plenty different enough. Steve Vai's Gem and hence the Ibanez 421 is different and an innovative in its day combination of features + innovation. But close copies rub me the wrong way no matter the sound differences. It is all legal, of course, but to me ethically questionable. Of course, it is better for the consumer because otherwise an LP and a Strat would probably start at 10k at present and an Affinity Strat or Tele would be 1k :)
Hey Kris, love the channel, a question/challenge. In a pedal board, you HAVE to have one under 49 euro pedal that can't be a buffer or a tuner and you can only have one premium/boutique(260 euro or more) pedal(the rest of the board gets to be anything you want) . which pedals would you choose? Looking forward to your answer!
My main guitar is a telecaster with Seymour Duncan Quaterpounder pickups, I bought it as a cheaper and lighter alternative to my Les Paul but it ended up pretty much replacing my Les Paul as my main guitar. It's not an expensive guitar either, it is one of those cheap fender tele's that were made in China for a couple of years.
Talkin about Telis (or Strats) for rock… While I love the single-coil sound I just can't manage single-coil noise. I know that a good noise gate can help a lot but it is still a hard thing for me…
You see, that’s very interesting. I never had any issues with single coil hum. 🤷♂️ For example this tele in the intro song -> pretty high gain and barely had any noise. Same thing on 99% of the gigs I play, so it can only be the power in my studio. 🤔
@@KrisBarocsi It would be nice to meet you and see if you can make my setup noiseless. Or point out what is/are the source(s) of the noise at least! (Ping me when you are in Hungary and have too much free time…😉)
Hey Kris, long time subscriber, sorry I don't post much in comments. However the ash tray bridge question led me to another question for you. Did you start on a Tele with an ashtray bridge or was it one of your first non beginner guitars that you really soent a lot.of time learning on? When you explained how you anchor your finger there it made me think. My first real guitar was a Floyd rose 30 years ago. Well I have 28 guitars now but 21 of them are floyd rose bridges. Just because I know how they feel. Where to anchor my hand and palm mute. I also know some people just can't stand Floyd's. So just curious.
Hi Kris! Sorry for the off-topic, but I've got a technical question. The push-push tone pot on my Am. HSS Pro Strat II - which does a coil split/tap - is very loose and flimsy. Meaning that turning the pot is way too easy. By pushing the knob, I'm almost always turning it by accident - up to 5 out of 10 steps. Is there an easy fix or would you recommend buying a new pot and if so, which one? Thanks a lot in advance.
Wasn't the ashtray bridge called that, because it originally had a "lid" that most people took off? My Tele from 1969 did not have such, but I don't know if the previous owner had thrown it away...
Kris, question about balancing tele pickups. I have a Squier CVC. I really like the output difference in the pickups, so when I go from neck to bridge I get that rocky oomph! However, I find myself wanting to roll half the tone when I'm on the bridge. How could I get a better tonal balance? Maybe bring the neck pickup up and lower the bridge a little? Alternatively, thinking about investing in a more "broadcastery" bridge pickup. Maybe I'm thinking this the wrong way, to want to get that oomph from just switching pickups, and it would serve me more to boost with a pedal with darker tone? What is a good pedal to boost a bridge tele pickup to humbucker territory?
This might be silly and maybe somebody should do a tonal comparison (maybe somebody has?), but I think there is a different behavior when strings are coupled together on the saddles... probably very minute difference if you can spot it at all. But there should be one, right?
Thanks so much! It’s not a full song yet but it definitely will be one. 😅 I wrote it for this video. But I like it too much to just leave it at that. Nagyon köszi Dávid! 🙏
I wonder if anyone thinks a little like me that the similar guitars at lower price points are actually good for the bigger brands as it gives the players a chance to feel like they have something similar but not the same I think this actually encourages people to aim for the more expensive one later ??
My two Vintages are very interesting , the V6P has Alder Strat body but it ends there input jack is at the body the fret board radius is 12 inches very Gibson, and it has 3 P90's , staggered bridge , staggered post on the A and E string interesting my V100 which is very close to a Les Paul also has differences obvious is the headstock but the break angel which leads to better tuning stability on the G string, I get what your saying you can go to Ali Express get a copy of Fender Pickups , Fender guitars etc, I agree with you there that's blatant plagiarism but these far eastern manufacture see a way to make quick euro pound dollar, they'll do it, because people will buy them,
Same here. Also I cant have the compensated saddles either. Must be the non-compensated 3 saddles. I have no issues with intonation. And yes must be the ashtray for the pinky!
[off-topic] Hey Kris, from one non-native German speaker to another: is the way you pronounce the R in Warum, Daran and Reiter typical of the region where you live, or is it reminiscent of your native language?
Hey man, it’s both. Here in Franken people say R like that. Same as in Hungary so it was easy for me. I can’t do the Hochdeutsch R to be honest. It feels very unnatural unless you were born into it. 😅 Do you live in Germany too?
@@KrisBarocsi Yes, I've been living in Germany for 8 years almost to the day, and I landed in Niedersachsen 100 km away from Hannover. It doesn't get any more Hochdeutsch than that. The Hochdeutsch R is very unnatural to me too but I forced myself to imitate it otherwise I sound too foreign.
But, Kris, even in pedals, there are almost no 1:1 clones in the market, either due to old components going out of production or due to semiconductor shortages. I think most pedal builders, just like guitar manufacturers, want to give people different options or additions or improvements on the original designs. Protectionist practices stifle innovation, because, let's be honest, copyright law was not designed to protect the little guy with the great design but the established corporations that spend $ millions in lobbying for stricter copyright laws (see Disney).
