@@TheCraftyOrganizer 😂 I am not able to move that fast & am not yet finished putting it all together! I am a disabled senior & do not have on hand everything needed to assemble this. I hope to get them when I go grocery shopping at Walmart the beginning of October. For years, I have wanted to repurpose junk furniture for fun (& possibly for profit). I have been recently rearranging/reorganizing the rooms in my small apartment & trying to make things more easily accessible. I decided to get rid of an old, hand-me-down bureau but keep its six, small drawers. Three of them fit under my hospital bed & conveniently hold things I use frequently. I had originally planned to connect all six into a shelving unit to display small, collected pieces, but your video gave me the idea of using only three drawers to hold my spices & other cooking-related items. I am so excited about doing this! The unit should be able to fit easily into a space in my kitchen. I shall be honored to send pics to you once this project is completed. 😌

Oh... I love this little cabinet. It's actually cute and serves the purpose perfectly.
I live older homes and built in nooks. Since seeing this, considering putting a cabinet like this between the studs.
And the measuring cups, could always hang 2 on one hook or switch the spoons up higher since they're flatter.

This brought a smile to my face. My childhood home, built in the late 40's early 50's had one of those built in ironing boards. Our kitchen was so narrow and if the board was down, you had to go out the front door to the back door to enter the kitchen. My mom took the ironing board out, converting the tiny closet into a small pantry to hold her canned goods. What a space saver! Also, this made me smile as today is the I had decided to reorganize my spice cabinet and here is your video! Your spice cabinet turned out absolutely gorgeous! I love, love, love it!

This is indeed a very useful internal space. Spice cabinet works great. Here is a useful tip......for the shelves......I use empty fabric bolts I get from Joann’s.......they are corrugated.....so have internal strength. Once I cover my measured and cut shelves with my choice of cover.......fabric/contact or quite often matching and / or decorative paper.....they look just like shelves.......very strong and can hold weight.

It's so nice to USE that space between the studs--and you did such a great job at making it both practical AND pretty!! (Obviously, the folks who designed older homes had a bit more sense; what a GREAT thing to put into a kitchen, or bathroom!!) BTW, if you have a misc piece of metal, chalk board, DT sign, or even a third piece of foam board, you could put it between the foam shelf pieces where you have your salt & pepper; or maybe just switch it out for a shelf you use for lighter items. (?)

I'm trying to figure out how to have have a small eating area with mini frig, microwave and coffee maker. I'll have a chair next to it in front of window where I can read or crochet. Any ideas? I usually like to suggest free things, however - this folding desk/storage may be PERFECT for you!!!! When it's closed, the things in the hutch are concealed - and it's open free space for your grandsons. They could even have their toys on the bottom shelves!!! But, when you need it, it easily pulls down (has hydrolic bars for easy open and close). Here's the link to it from Ikea: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/ivar-shelving-unit-with-foldable-table-s59248551/

I do like the IKEA unit. I saved it since I might have a need for it later this year. Although the item I found does not include the convenient drop-down work/dining table it might be worth considering. I own a few wooden folding tray-tables that I use for numerous projects and eating, usually less than $10 via Walmart or various other stores. The 9 cube unit in the link is less than $75, they sell a 12 cube version for less than $100. A coffeemaker would probably fit on the top shelf, microwave on top of mini frig. Storage bins available via Walmart although Dollar Tree also sells assorted sizes. www.walmart.com/ip/Heavy-Duty-9-Cube-Organizer-Shelf-Stackable-Particle-Board-Bookcase-Closet-Storage-Cabinet/173896092

Actually for renters some landlords would prefer paint to ANY contact paper. When contact paper is removed it leaves a sticky glue residue that causes damage to the surfaces the paper is put on. So it's best to check with your lease agreements and directly with your landlord.

    • @TheCraftyOrganizer
      @TheCraftyOrganizer  4 года назад +1

True - Thank you for that reminder!!! I need to mention that every time. If it's a satin or gloss... you can use goo gone or goof off to get rid of the residue. But if it's a flat paint you can not use anything on it!!! Thanks, Pam!!!!

love it ==can u just switch your measuring spoons up there and the 1/4 and other cups down where the spoons are now. they seem flat enough that they may just fit.... was the checkered paper true contact paper or was it wrapping paper that you used your spray glue on it? the paper seemed to go on so easy my experience with contact paper well, lets say it can be easy or a battle. lol i love the way you work with your lovely old house and make it even prettier without gutting it. that is true farmhouse you know.....making do and making it as pretty as possible, hence the flour sack and drop cloth pillows and what not. coming up poor on a home stead that's what we did. now it's called self sufficient, and off grid, small foot print. hell when i was a girl in the 60s it was simply poverty.

      @TheCraftyOrganizer  4 года назад

It was simple wrapping paper with spray adhesive! I didn't know that about the farmhouse look!!!! Makes total sense! I am kind of proud that we live 'poor'. My kids learn to appreciate things more. We live off what I make running my business and making these videos. If we can't pay for it... we don't get to have it. Except one time we were short on cash at the grocery store (They were little at the time).... my youngest asked if we could get Subway instead of me cooking... you oldest yelled (more loudly than I would have liked in a busy grocery store...) "NO! We have to eat clearance meat!" We STILL laugh about that!

Liked this idea. Hw did u get the shelf holders to be level to the other side so the shelf was level?

I use a free level app on my phone.... once it showed my shelf was level, I marked it off and added the other bracket. Super easy! :)

Lovely end-result. This is the first time I have ever wished I had an ironing board closet. Just a thought re the shelf with toothpicks on it. Until you are able to go to the store you could cut a 12" length of a wire clothes hanger and place it on the shelf beneath the foam-core. Depending on the weight maybe utilize 2 pieces of wire. (If the shelf was not already wrapped you could possibly place the wire between the foam-core.) Awesome use of usually wasted space. (I adore your curls! My hair will not curl. Occasionally I can 'bend' it a bit but it doesn't last. Perms do not last a month. Oh well, at least I am not bald.)

You did a great job on this cabinet. I would change the foam board out with wood when you can. But not to have it on hand, and come up with that idea for a short term was brilliant. I'm afraid of contact paper like wallpaper. I just don't think I'm coordinated enough to walk and chew gum at the same time. When I was younger, I did some wallpapering and it was hard but I managed to do it. But I wouldn't do it myself now at my age. I love the look of wallpaper and have had some very beautiful wallpaper in houses (mostly professionally put up). But I've also had some wallpaper, professionally installed, that peeled at the seams and there is nothing you can do to fix that. I tried. I used the same installer, same brand of Waverly wallpaper. But somehow some did wonderfully well and lasted for years and some didn't. Finding a pro who really knows what they are doing is a crap shoot. Removing wallpaper was always my job and I hate it, it's very difficult. So, of course, with the cost of wallpaper and installation, and the hard job of removing it and the potential damage to sheetrock and having to have it repaired, I'm afraid now to ever use it again and have avoided it despite loving it. But using the contact paper with the repositional spray adhesive for the back of the cabinet makes it seem much less daunting and the effect was beautiful. I used to have closets that I wallpapered and it made them so much more beautiful and finished looking. My problem with SPICES is the various sizes of containers they come in. We cook and use a lot of spices. I have tried so many different ways to make it look neat and have failed with every attempt. First, I don't use cloves very much (except for mulled cider at Christmas) so a little jar is sufficient but we use garlic, in powder and salt, a LOT and we buy the larger jars. I've tried using all the same size jars for all the spices regardless of how much I have or need but that wastes space because I need the large jars for spices like garlic, chili powder, oregano... I've applied different kinds of labels to make them look nice but I have to wipe the jars off each time my husband cooks, before putting them back in the cabinet because he's messy and doesn't wash his hands before using the spice jars. Thus the labels eventually peel off or come off, even permanent marker on glass will eventually come off. I just can't get a handle on the spices so that's one cabinet that bugs me but I can't seem to change. Wonder if blackboard paint and the markers you have to wipe off (in another video where you compared items from Dollar Tree) would work on glass jars? At least, if I wipe it off, I can put it back on with the marker. Hmmmm.....

The foam is still holding up!!!! It's been almost a year! I love using contact paper - I think you should try it on something small. It is SO much more forgiving than wallpaper!!! But the repositionable spray adhesive is by far the best.

Hi Norrine! You have given me such terrific ideas. Watching your channel has improved my home so much!
    I love this idea- I have a shallow cupboard like this : 23” wide, 77” tall &
6 3/4” deep, it has long double doors. This cabinet is located at the end of my kitchen not close to any cooking areas. Over the years this was the craft cabinet for my kids that held all of their markers , crayons etc. now that they are grown I’d love to turn it into my command center. I absolutely love your ideas here- I can incorporate all of it into my project! I just ordered the 3M Super 77 spray mount from your amazon site. That stuff is truly a game changer! Thank you for your posts- you are practical and inspiring! Your girls are so blessed to have such a mom as you preparing them for their future!

I purchased that adhesive to see how I like it. I'm not super happy with my current brand. Thank you for the recommendation.
I think you can fit the spoons and cups in if you visualize the doors closed and move them around. There are plenty of shelves where the cups can easily hang. Maybe put ¼ & ⅓ where ½ & 1 C are. Then move ½ & 1 C below the spoons.👍
Btw, top right cup should be ⅓. 😉

That turned out so cute! I can tell by your happy face that you are pleased with it! The contact paper just brightens it up! I keep my spices in a basket in a cupboard and it doesn't really work for me. Thinking about a lazy susan or something like that so I can see them easier. I remember having an ironing board that folded up into a space like that when I was young and even then I thought it was kind of cool! lol. Look forward to seeing your next video! Stay safe! :)

I love this. I admire the way you can turn an area round and make it work for you in an appealing way. The contact paper really makes it look pretty. I’ve been trying to work out what to do with my spices for ages. They’re small but tricky! 🙂

Spices are tricky..... For my clients I either sort by frequency of use - or by type. I have a few that prefer them to be alphabetized. If you have many, small bins really help.

ADORABLE! I love the idea of built-ins and Bungalo style-- any home built before WW 2. But repurposing the Murphy ironing board was genius! I love the energy of Buffalo checks, the contrast is a great backdrop for splashes of color. My mom's kitchen had black and white checks. So cute.

    That looks awesome!
    Fresh and very neat.❤️
What I did when I remade my spice cabinet, is very similar.
But I added a little accent. That actually hides where the shelfs are attached,. (Its also a little bit of flirting with how they thought any proper shelf should be decorated way back in the 40’s.).
I took a coordinated paper (1 1/2 times as wide as the shelf and twice as long.) then made small folds and glued those, you can make the folds in different ways and by that achieve different looks.
Then used a Washi tape that was different but accenting and put that without creases. .
I actually used a but of glue to secure that.
Since I might want to change this in the future and since im renting, I used a double adhesive tape to attach it to the part of the shelf thats closest.
Some people use l lace but That wouldn’t fit my style.
(This is meant as a tio or inspiration and definitely not as criticism, because I love the things you do.)
    .
