I wanted to convey how disturbing it is to be constantly treated like an outsider because of something out of your control. Everyone in this country comes from someplace else.
The parallels of my grandparents’ time and the present are clear. People are still dehumanized because of the way they look and where they come from. But, in the midst of it all, there are still courageous people doing courageous things. That’s worth celebrating.
