I used a paper towel roll so card board. It picked up a lot of paint. Also you should try to use the flat side of the cookie cutter rather than the cutting edge side. 😊
I love when people show what doesn't go right. Much more encouraging than someone who's seemingly always peefect! Maybe wet the paper first so the paint flows even if it doesn't pick up so well on the cookie cutter?
i would try wiping them down with rubbing alcohol since the watery paint wont stick if theres even a hint of oil. i would also try lightly sanding with a super fine grain sandpaper or rubbing with baking soda and water or baking soda toothpaste.
You might try sanding the edge of the plastic stencil with fine grit sandpaper or emery board. Creating a rough surface may help the paint stick and the hearts transfer better. This technique is frequently used with clear acrylic stamps to prevent the ink from beading on the surface.
If using a plastic cookie cutter, I recommend wiping it down with either a magic eraser...or scrubber sponge, to roughen it up to hold the paint better. I can see reusing a toilet paper roll bent into a heart shape. Thanks for sticking with it and giving us all the confidence that it doesn't always work the way we thought it was going to.
I saw the same but I used the lids off my vitamin bottles and it worked!! I was surprised because they were plastic but had enough surface I guess. Also, I made a big puddle of paint from tubes. It's a neat little fun thing to try. 😊
I couldn't disagree with you any more strongly if I tried that this was a failure in any way shape or form. I didn't even know this existed until you. I love how you approach learning. You screw up, you're honest and you show every way I would do things. I'm real and so are you. You do the things that we all would, so we don't have to. You waste the paper, the effort and the time and save us the headache in figuring it out. You're a light and don't ever think you aren't. I love the shift in content and I love that you're switching it up. I can't wait to see how you decide to do just that in 2023 and surprise us all with what makes YOU happy and how that takes shape. This is your job, yes, but that should bring joy to you, first. Keep going Emma, you're knocking this out of the park, more than you know. We're all cheering you on, even if you can't hear us or we don't sound off as regularly as we should!
Thank you for trying this! I have seen these being done also and wanted to try. After watching and reading the comments, I think I can do it. Yours showed that even with a little paint, it still comes out great!
Love this! I bought some art that I’m pretty sure used this technique and I’ve been staring at my wall for months trying to figure out how the artist did it! I can’t wait to try this technique. I’m planning on using a glue stick on the plastic cookie cutters and then rubbing off. I remember seeing that in an older art hack video of yours and I’ve prepped every new palette that way and it works wonders every time. Also, I LOVE that you show the full process of learning! You show that art isn’t about what we produce; it’s about the process. Experimentation is part of that process and you can’t learn without failure and surprise. I loved this video!
Great video Emma! There's always something to learn while experimenting and in my opinion, your painting turned out beautifully. I love how I got to learn right alongside you as you were experimenting. Thank you.
I really like it. I'm going to try to trace with a thin brush and clean water on the inside of a die I have and then drop the color and see what happens. Nothing goes to waste even if I don't like how something turned out at first. sometimes I have to walk away from something and look at later. Eventually I will need a card panel and I use oops projects for those. Thanks Emma for showing how not to be afraid of experiments....it's only paint and paper! 🧡💛💚💙💜
When you place the colors down just add the colors you couldn't pick up with the brush and go over it by just touching it and let it mix by its self. You get a sort of Psychedelic look. Also make the circle with plain water first on paper then while wet dip object in cor then stamp it and it'll move colors on its own. That's the way I do it it's pretty 😍. Lololol thanks for the demonstration. FLORIDA
I apply colour directly to the rim (yellow, pink, blue etc) and it is so much easier. To avoid mud, I don't apply complimentary colours Close to each other like yellow next to purple. P. S. Your painting turned out lovely! 💗💗💗
I saw your video this morning and loved it. Trying to do something like it and not having heart shaped anything that I could use I used stencils that I had made along with watercolor pencils. Going by the struggles that you were going through I opted for only primary colors. End result, I loved how it turned out. If you have watercolor pencils how about trying this out for yourself. Keep up the good work. Ya know what I bet there are all kinds of stencils out there that could be done the same way! I'm gonna have to try that. See what you did to me!!! LOL!!!
Thankyou for sharing this! I think if you lightly sand/rough up the hearts, it might work better. My plastic paint mixing pans, I had to do the same as they don't work the same as the ceramic/glass. I loved this project Emma. Thanks again for sharing!
You could use a ‘no line’ ink stamping pad to stamp the cookie cutter (or any image) and then paint the stamped image. As long as the ink is waterproof and the paper will take the stamped image I think that would work.
I've got a few heart shapes made from toilet paper rolls, I'll give that a go and use a baby food jar with my kids this weekend. I've only seen a video pop up about it here on RUclips once. It looks cute.
Maybe the plate or the the cookie cutters are not level. Agree glass probably picks up better than plastic. The width of the brim could make a difference as well. Thanks for the video, I will give it a try and be aware of color placement and cleaning brush in between.
Cute idea that we can experiment with for sure!! Wonder if you used (I don't typically, but might try) some good water color pencils to lightly trace (with various small strokes) and then blend like this.
That's really pretty. 😊 I have some metal heart shaped cookie cutters so I'll give them a go and see if they paint stick to them better than plastic. 😊
I bought a metal heart shaped cookie cutter and had the same problem. I saw in these comments that someone mentioned using a paper towel roll so I just tried that and it picked up more color but didn’t hold the heart shape very well
Never heard of a mixing stone. What advantages do you find using something like that compared to a silicone mat? And could you provide a link to the mixing stone? Thanks much.
Although Arches is really good for watercolor, it's also very expensive. Until I feel comfortable with techniques and watercolor, in general, is there a paper you recommend that is great to practice on?
I think plastic is the problem. Maybe sand them down like new plastic watercolor pallets so the paint doesn’t bead up. You made this comment after I posted my comment. lol thanks for the fun idea 🎉🎉🎉
Try painting the rim of any container or shape with matte medium or gloss medium, it doesn't matter which. This polymer product will leave a slight rubber-like surface and is slightly textured by the brush. Made by Golden and Liquitex. It will be permanent when dry on the tool.
Hey guys! I received my first box awhile ago, I try to get into the webs to do the tute but, I could not find it. Does any of you have the same issues?
Also, I think you need more color on your palette and maybe wetter? IDK I should have watched the whole thing before commenting. You figured out the issue with the plastic :p
I love that you show that watercolour doesn’t always go according to plan. I’ve had lots of disappointments but we live and learn.
4:23 I absolutely love that you show experiments that don’t go so brilliantly - bravo & thank you x
I used a paper towel roll so card board. It picked up a lot of paint. Also you should try to use the flat side of the cookie cutter rather than the cutting edge side. 😊
cardboard roll is a good idea, you could even shape it into a heart
I love when people show what doesn't go right. Much more encouraging than someone who's seemingly always peefect! Maybe wet the paper first so the paint flows even if it doesn't pick up so well on the cookie cutter?
Sand paper or emery board to rough up smooth plastic may help grab more paint
I agree. Maybe more water and rubbing.
that's what I came down to say. sanding it or roughing it up in some manner should help
I love how you show the value of experimentation. I think it prevents us from beating ourselves up when something doesn’t go according to plan.
i would try wiping them down with rubbing alcohol since the watery paint wont stick if theres even a hint of oil. i would also try lightly sanding with a super fine grain sandpaper or rubbing with baking soda and water or baking soda toothpaste.
Yes, baking soda and water on plastic to get rid of oil...works on Tupperware to get rid of sticky film oil causes, also.
You might try sanding the edge of the plastic stencil with fine grit sandpaper or emery board. Creating a rough surface may help the paint stick and the hearts transfer better. This technique is frequently used with clear acrylic stamps to prevent the ink from beading on the surface.
I think it looks cute with the mix of hearts and circles!
If using a plastic cookie cutter, I recommend wiping it down with either a magic eraser...or scrubber sponge, to roughen it up to hold the paint better. I love that you tried this Emma! Thanks for showing us what works and what doesn't!
I saw the same but I used the lids off my vitamin bottles and it worked!! I was surprised because they were plastic but had enough surface I guess. Also, I made a big puddle of paint from tubes. It's a neat little fun thing to try. 😊
I wondered if using thicker viscosity of paint could help with the heart shapes. Thanks for giving it a try and sharing your results.

Oh I think this turned out really beautiful! What a neat little project ☺️ This would make a very cute valentines card/print 🖤 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for trying this! I have seen these being done also and wanted to try. After watching and reading the comments, I think I can do it. Yours showed that even with a little paint, it still comes out great!

I was pleased with the results I got by dipping cookie cutter in acrylic then painting in with watercolour.
Great video Emma! There's always something to learn while experimenting and in my opinion, your painting turned out beautifully. I love how I got to learn right alongside you as you were experimenting. Thank you.
Just got done making my own pallette with tubes. Gonna have to try this whenever they dry! Might have to just practice with my pan set.

Thank you for showing everything ("warts and all")
Magic eraser on the plastic to give it some tooth? I love this look.
I apply colour directly to the rim (yellow, pink, blue etc) and it is so much easier. To avoid mud, I don't apply complimentary colours Close to each other like yellow next to purple. P. S. Your painting turned out lovely! 💗💗💗

Lol. Emma Jane does that to us all the time. I wonder how many people are anxiously awaiting her February box.
Thankyou for sharing this! I think if you lightly sand/rough up the hearts, it might work better. My plastic paint mixing pans, I had to do the same as they don't work the same as the ceramic/glass. I loved this project Emma. Thanks again for sharing!
Maybe the paint is too thin. You could try smearing some paint on the plate straight from the tube.
I like how they turned out!
I tried this and had the same problem. So I put glue on the jar rim and painted it on. It worked pretty well.
I painted the color on a plastic rim and it worked very well.
Love the composition. Hearts very inspiring idea! Keep it up buttercup you’re doing GREAT!
Art doesn’t always go as planned 🤗🤔😉 very cool
You could use a ‘no line’ ink stamping pad to stamp the cookie cutter (or any image) and then paint the stamped image. As long as the ink is waterproof and the paper will take the stamped image I think that would work.
If your plate is not completely flat, it won’t pick up paint evenly. I’m going to try this. They look great
Yes! I've my medicine cup to make Christmas ornaments. Use lots of paint 🎨, it works great 👍
I've got a few heart shapes made from toilet paper rolls, I'll give that a go and use a baby food jar with my kids this weekend. I've only seen a video pop up about it here on RUclips once. It looks cute.
I was thinking I would try that. You could make random differently shaped 💜
I'll definitely try this, it looks like fun
Emma I look forward to your posts everyday. I bought your book and I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you so much !
Linda. I’m a big fan
Using an eraser on the plastic before dipping it in the paint might work. It makes the surface a little less smooth and the beeding will be less.
Love it !!!
Try & coat with toothpaste to prevent beading on the cookie cutters. It may work?
Maybe the plate or the the cookie cutters are not level. Agree glass probably picks up better than plastic. The width of the brim could make a difference as well. Thanks for the video, I will give it a try and be aware of color placement and cleaning brush in between.
I think it would work better with a silicone rubber ring or desired shape. It needs the flexibility but also needs to absorb the paint.
Cute idea that we can experiment with for sure!! Wonder if you used (I don't typically, but might try) some good water color pencils to lightly trace (with various small strokes) and then blend like this.
Oh that’s a great idea! I would’ve never thought of that but it definitely sounds like it’d work 🤔
That's really pretty. 😊 I have some metal heart shaped cookie cutters so I'll give them a go and see if they paint stick to them better than plastic. 😊
Made paint in a shallow bowl for more paint on the heart.
There ya go! Good job.
Im going to try that with circles and the crayons
Ooh fun, I’ll have to try this. It looks so pretty too 🫧
I love it emma!❤
How about making a clear water shape (heart/circle) on the paper first then stamping? Might encourage more colour bleeding.
Acrylic heart or any shape stamp might work a bit better!!!
I’m thinking sanding the top of the heart and using a sponge to make a stamp out of it?????
Hmmmmm. I wanna play slash experiment 🎉
This is really pretty! Funny, it’s been on my list of things to do to make a tutorial on bubbles 😂
I couldn’t get plastics to work. I used a small glass jar and then off set it a few times to make a wreath
It was interesting to watch and I will try it! I love circles and will try this! Always a treat to watch you! Thanks, Karen Dirmish 12:58
I bought a metal heart shaped cookie cutter and had the same problem. I saw in these comments that someone mentioned using a paper towel roll so I just tried that and it picked up more color but didn’t hold the heart shape very well
Really cute ❤
Maybe watercolor ink with more pigment? I agree and roughen up the surface
Move the heart around in the paint. More paint will adhere.
Never heard of a mixing stone. What advantages do you find using something like that compared to a silicone mat? And could you provide a link to the mixing stone? Thanks much.
I just Love These 🌹🥀🌺
Although Arches is really good for watercolor, it's also very expensive. Until I feel comfortable with techniques and watercolor, in general, is there a paper you recommend that is great to practice on?
I think you have to use brush that holds more water. Like Neptune. Or some French quill brush.
And maybe fresh paints from tubes.
Wonder if metal cookie cutters would work well ... I'll have to experiment. Thanks!
I think plastic is the problem. Maybe sand them down like new plastic watercolor pallets so the paint doesn’t bead up. You made this comment after I posted my comment. lol thanks for the fun idea 🎉🎉🎉
Thank for experimenting on camera!
Pretty cool idea ⚾️
Perhaps an old school metal cookie cutter would work.
I wonder if you used thicker paint and painted it on the heart? Or tried a metal cookie cutter? Ormaybe the thicker side of the cookie cutter?
Less Water more Consistent with acrylic
What about using a metal heart shaped cookie cutter
I tried this and had the same problem
Amazing share
What is that brush called?
Seems like you need more water in the paint maybe?

Maybe if you roughed up the edge with fine sandpaper?
You know how you need to prep a white plastic palette before using, to prevent beading up? Same thing applies here.
Also, M Graham or another honey based watercolor may stick a little better.
Hey guys! I received my first box awhile ago, I try to get into the webs to do the tute but, I could not find it.
Does any of you have the same issues?
❤ curious if metal cookie cutters would work any better.
I tried a metal cookie cutter and had the same problem
@@breannesargent8692 well dang 😩
I think the edge of the cookie cutters is just too thin. Just try the other thick side.
I saw in another video that they water the paper before, so the paint explodes in the paper!
I think the plastic is repelling the paint. Could be why everyone is using glass?
Also, I think you need more color on your palette and maybe wetter? IDK
I should have watched the whole thing before commenting. You figured out the issue with the plastic :p
The plastic repels water
