  • The West Coast vs. East Coast of Florida has many differences. Depending on where someone is coming from to Florida, will typically determine which coast in Florida they will find more appealing. The West Coast and East Coast of Florida generally have different characteristics and culture. This video explores those differences.

He is bang on about the cultures. The east is more hustle bustle, traffic, north eastern escaping the cold, multi cultural, better food choices and built up. West is more laid back, less traffic, more spread out, mid western vibe and politically conservative. Mid westerners tend to retire to the west coast, north easterners tend to retire on the east coast.

Politically, it’s not exactly like that anymore. St. Petersburg is an extremely progressive (leftist) town. Jacksonville is more conservative and Miami has become more red too as the large Hispanic population votes more red.

The SAND is different: west coast sand is generally white powdery coral which remains cool even in blistering heat. The EAST coast sand is basically crushed stone, which retains heat and will burn your feet on a hot day.

On the East Coast the sun goes down earlier in winter and the tall buildings on the beaches leave you in a cold shade. No sun sets.

Long-Term Florida resident here... I would not lump all of the FL East-coast together. There is a tremendous difference between South Florida, the Treasure Coast region, and North Eastern FL (ST Jax/St Augustine area) To the beaches, culture, economy etc The keys are it's own category altogether

I agree. Wholeheartedly. I cringed when he said northeast beaches like Daytona & Cocoa Beach. As a Jax Native I was like “huh”? Every FL Native knows that Central FL beaches start from Daytona Beach and go down to Vero Beach by Indian River County, where the landscape turns to South FL. And I’m pretty sure the West Coast of FL has as much coastline as the East Coast if not more if you include the Panhandle around the Big Bend. Makes me forget how hyper local Floridians can be meaning they only really know about the regions they live in or frequent the most lol.

@@Jkburd - The noise from a rocket launch is not as loud as a jet aircraft and only lasts for a minute or two. It’s more of a rumble than a loud noise and can be felt as well as heard. We have been as close as they allow at Kennedy Space Center’s Viewing Area ( approximately 3 miles) and as far as thirteen miles away. The noise is not a factor at all from either place. When the booster(s) return to the cape, there is a sonic boom that happens as it is re-enters the atmosphere at, I believe, twice the speed of sound (or more). It sounds like an actual “boom” - kinda like the sound of two vehicles hitting one another or perhaps a large gun shot. It’s actually a double “boom-boom” sound and shakes the ground. There are videos of both rocket launches and boosters returning on RUclips with sound that is exactly what you will hear and feel. Hope this is helpful info for you.

    Lived on both coasts.
Ft Myers Beach had a laid back vibe; alot of happy campers. 😅
I loved the East Coast some years ago; lived in various places in Palm Beach County (Boca, Deerfield, Delray). Late wife and son attended school and university in PBC. It became a bit 'invaded' recently with people lacking respect for neighbors and property.
I'm now 62, currently staying in the NE part of the Country (near the Poconos in PA). Moved north in 2020 when COVID took over SW FL. I miss the Sunshine State everyday 😢😢
I'm watching videos on all areas; would like to move to a small town area (not hours from a beach, quiet, affordable). The Villages is far from my 'dream place' to retire.
Looking to rent for now; open to babysit a snowbird's residence short term.

We are the same age as you and retired to Punta Gorda just north of Ft Myers. We love it here. We are on the water with a boat and a pool, but we go back north at least a couple times a year to temorarliy do the metropolitan thing (Smithsonian, Kennedy Center, concerts etc) for a little bit then come back to escape the nonsense daily gridlock. We feel we get the best of both worlds!

As a native Floridian this was the 1st time in my life I ever heard Miami being referred to as the “central area” of the state when it comes to beaches if you include the Keys. Uhhhh…that’s going to confuse a lot of new people moving to FL lol. Here’s a better breakdown for you:
NE FL beaches: (Fernandina/Jax Beach/St Augustine) great surf, more local vibes, good mix of gritty/party/quiet options, not touristy with the exception of St Augustine. Definitely some GA vibes mixed in here.
Central FL Beaches: (Daytona, Ormond Beach, Cocoa, Space Coast) - best surfing in the state, but watch for sharks, party culture strong here, it can get quiet too if you live in Melbourne. Close to Orlando!
Southeast Fl: (West Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Miami) - Party, Loud, Expensive, Fast Paced Life, Latin/International Culture, very touristy.
Southwest Fl: (Tampa, Sarasota, St Pete, Naples, Ft Myers) - white sand, green gulf water, a good mix of South and North FL, not too quiet but not too loud. Party in St Pete, but kick back in Sarasota at the Siesta keys, most non native Floridians tend to live on the SW part of the state. Old/Rich live from Sarasota to Naples, the young and party centric live in TB/St Pete/Clearwater.
NW FL aka the Redneck Riviera: (Pensacola, Destin, Panama City) beautiful sand and water, outside of Spring Break and Mardi Gras it’s pretty slow here. Tons of Bama, Louisiana, Mississippi & GA people here.
Key West & the Keys: it’s another country, might as well be an extension of Cuba lol. Island Time all the Time.

When I studied the state ten years ago.. planning my move, Jacksonville is actually a coastal city with lower Hurricane risk, and the reason is that the coastline on the East has a little diagonal . Further West in Jacksonville, and further East in Miami, but I think the reason Jacksonville is spared is due to Weather fronts pushing hurricanes slightly away from the coast there, and they make landfall in the Carolinas instead. Naples was supposedly also lucky, but not this year. But since SW FL just got creamed, they aren't due for many years now... statistically.
