Man everything you said about the show can be said about episode 2. It was my favorite. The drowsiness, the heat that just turns everything into slow motion... I guess only people who live in arid places understand
It's certainly the most visual auteur driven show I've seen since Twin Peaks The Return, good video. Another example of auteur driven shows is Soderbergh's amazing underrated show, The Knick. He directs every episode and it is also scored by the great Cliff Martinez. Whereas Season 1 is a great ensemble drama, Season 2 descends into an early 20th Century set horror film.
I couldn't shut up about it to everyone I talked to since it came out. I binged it if you can call it that because episodes were slow and very long by comparison to the majority of today's shows but being a NWR fan I was hooked. I loved every bit of it, the uncomfortable silences and lengthy shots, neon lighting with an electro-synth soundtrack made the TOTDY into sort of a modern western or neon-noir where you're just a helpless spectator of the brutal violence that ensued, masterfully composed by Refn. Sadly it's a standalone season but I'm sure Refn will be back with something special again.
I wish people appreciated TOTDY more. I know its very slow and has weird scenes, but they're never made just for being slow and weird, it's to build characters and the world.
It's happening to me. I finished the first ep and it felt like an eternity. Although everything is so good...but the pacing is just (i can't handle that)
Nice analysis! Although episode 2 did test my patience, it did feature an absolutely masterful use of the slow pan camera movement (in the police captain's office). We get the gradual reveal of Miguel doing some coke while lounging on the Captain's desk, and of course, we hear this way before we see it. It establishes his arrogance and disdain for the captain, as well as making plain that corruption is a daily part of life here. It also clues us into a future plot point. Then they have a whole conversation, and it's only towards the end that the camera pans back to reveal Jesus, who hadn't even been acknowledged yet. So there's a whole bunch of information there about Jesus's relationship to/with Miguel, and the precarious position Jesus occupies within the family. I mean, I don't have much else to say about it, it's just really well done!
THE KNICK is a tv show about a hospital in 1900s NYC that was completely directed by STEVEN SODERBERGH and it’s phenomenal. Check it out if you haven’t.
We have to wait maybe forty years to see something like that, seeing this kind od art, you know, screen walls, very immersive, the same past is telling you the future, I'm telling you this after two years of this.
What's funny about this show, as you watch it and it drags and its painfully slow in many parts. Once it's over you MISS IT!! you want more. I found this show actually painful to get through sometimes but at the same time loved it, I felt awkward watching it and was grossed out but what shocked me is how throughout I had an actual experience. This show is definitely about the journey and not the destination.
I am experiencing the vision of the series in the order of the major arcana. Refn is also supposed to read the series this way. Good vision it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcani_maggiori
Yeah me personally I don't mind watching new season.. not episodes every week but amazon prime said they have no plans for season 2 and refn did what he did in episode 8 and everything got ruined. .. I reached this point where I wish I've had enough money to produce this show's second season personally
But it doesn't need a second season? It's pretty clear, even from the progression of the story, that this was intended to be a limited run series. There's nowhere else for the show to go. Hell, even the final episode was basically 30 minutes of nothing. It was pretty and mesmerizing, but the story didn't advance at all because everything had been concluded. So yeah, season 2 is a definite no on all fronts.
Randall the Vandal So the Mexican cartel just expands and takes over ? Martirza just fucks it over sometimes whenever she feels like it ? Who will become the new protege for Viggo? I think a second season could be possible but it would have to be a lot more episodic
Twin peaks season 3 is really spiritual. People that reject spirituality maybe can't relate to it... the idea of people being possessed and demonic beings everywhere... But that's what Twin peaks always was about, wasn't it?
You guys fuckin rock. And being from LYNN I loved the malden Hollywood video reference 😉 just gotta point out. You guys were confused about Martin and whether he worked previously for Damien. . In there first sit-down at ice rink he tells him that basically he shouldn't have shot the mother and Martin tells him his partner lied and actually it was him who shot the mother. This basically explains that he was in on the robbery/murder and simply hadn't yet met his employer. Just the word of his partner who knew him personally. Keep up the reviews and I'll keep up the views
Yo! Stop hating on episode 2, homie. It was the one that I loved the most, and it was the reason why I decided to finish watching the show. Unfortunately he could never top episode 2 for me.
I'm surprised you say Episode 2 is a drag, even being a fan of the director. It's one of my favorites and I kinda think of it as just a good Nic Refn movie because of how it kind of tells it's own story and is actually feature length. I honestly find episode 1 to stand out as the most boring/poorly paced.
The problem is nobody had the patience to watch it. I kinda disagree on episode 2, I was actually into that one, but at later points I felt the show tested even my own patience. But it's clear from RUclips that there's plenty of channels of people "reacting" to the trailer and going "woooooah that's wild" but no videos of people discussing actually watching the show.
I have too admit I liked the show, but seeing Jesus get his revenge without any negative consequences whatsoever left me feeling a bit empty inside. At the same time having Viggo come to the Jesus's ranch and start mowing down cartel members by the dozen saving Martin in the process would have felt like your typical action movie cliché ending. I know that Martin is a cold-blooded murderer that should not be fully sympathized with but even knowing the dubious moral compass of our protagonist, I still feel that there should have been some sort of karmic justice for Jesus and his men for all the pain and suffering they have caused.
One thing I don't see mentioned enough is how fucking funny this show really is. A lot of dry, absurd humor in there. I do think that it was too slow-paced all in all, but damn is every second worth seeing just from a visual standpoint alone.

I agree, it's great. But I have to say, surprised you didn't mention Breaking Bad. I know it's "cliche" but it really is as good as advertised, if not better in some ways. And Too Old to Die Young, reminded me of a weird mish mash of Drive, Twin Peaks, True Detective and Breaking Bad.
It wasn’t supposed to be realistic. Completely missed the point there. If you watch refns material and expect it to take place in the world we live in, you will be disappointed.
First and foremost the editing of the video is freaking insane Totdy would have been a better show if you edited it 2nd the biggest problem with refn is that he should have been Banned from writing anything that has to do with a show movie he even admits himself that he sucks at writing so why does he keep writing? The opening scene of episode 5 is absolute perfection

Refn is working on a new tv show 'Maniac cop'
I got the feeling that Martin's arc was neo-noir, and when we were following the cartel it felt like a neo-western. Very interesting show.

Up there with the absolute best like Banshee, Robot etc.
Massively underrated. Lots of young people will not like the slow pacing due to being used to TikTok’s short attention span.
