    worked in corrections (not a guard) for 7 years, and only did publicly owned prisons, and i can tell you they have loads of rehabilitation programs, and adequate staffing, i would often have talks with the Prison manager (boss of a whole Gaol) and he would often quote "we are correctional facilities, not Prisons, we're a lot different than america", 100p can confirm this video is totes accurate.

    • @PedroAnastazi
      @PedroAnastazi 4 года назад +3

      yeah, the government gaols are actually overstaffed becuase they hire anyone with 2 digit IQ... Ive seen ALOT of shit and lack of staff only applies to certain areas and public holidays which bring on penalty rates... as for the rehab and programs, i beg to differ... theyve killed off tafe, and most education... there are massive queues for rehab and offender programs whereby people are denied their parole becuase they cant get into those programs whilst in custody which was th epoint of being put there in the first place... then there is the failure of healthcare with the hiring of uneducated ignorant staff who deliberately fudge docuements and allowing inmates to go without treatment... I could go on... Gaol is gaol.. but the system is broken and wont be repaired... the idea for all this opening of more private prisons, is to shut down long bay gaol despite its heritage listing and sell off the $15b property to development... then flog all th einmates off to the new huge prison down south west currentluy being developed... if you tihnk im kidding, jsut watch and wait... it'll happen and its been the talk of long bay for the last 6 yrs now... Its already underway... the public arent being told though...

Building a new prison to cater for this (the Clarence corrections centre in Grafton is set to be Australia's biggest prison when complete in 2020) is not a bad thing just because it is privatised, considering how slow state infrastructure projects are to complete.

    in WA the worst prisons have been government controlled and this is with liberal and labor in power. bandyup (womens) and hakea (mens medium [worse than maximum because max inmates have "earned their stripes", are in there for longer, and medium is filled with younger blokes with massive egos trying to make a name for themselves.) of course it varies state to state but from what i've heard the 2 worst prisons in australia are Long Bay in sydney (mens maximum [i'm pretty sure. my mate has been there. done time all over the country...] and Bandyup (edit: Perth's womens prison). OVER 70% OF THE INMATES IN BANDYUP HAVE HEPATITIS C THAT IS EASILY SOME AMERICAN PRISON LEVEL OF FUCKED UP...

    I was on the fence about privatising prisons but this has changed my mind, i guess the most convincing argument is that private prisons main goal would be to have as many prisoners and to keep them coming back.

    Thanks for referring to the disabled guy as "disabled" and not using some obnoxious term like "differently abled". We don't tend to get any say in how we're represented (hence, the disabled community's saying, "Nothing about us without us.") and the way people talk about us MATTERS. The term "disabled" is not an insult or a dirty word, because being disabled is not shameful.
    For anyone wanting to know, the two terms preferred & used by the VAST majority of us are "disabled person" and "person with disabilities". Some prefer to put the identity first, while others prefer the person-first version.

    I'm sorry, but the point of prisons - at least in Victoria - seems to be retribution, not rehabilitation.
    Pharmacist colleagues of mine have done shifts at prisons. The conditions there are little better than Guantanamo. The atmosphere is depressing to be around. Guards are few and far between - although you wouldn't know that unless you went behind the gates. The people there are addicted on heroin, on oxycodone, on ice, have histories of trauma and psychiatric disorders, and are unpredictably violent or aggressive. The methadone doses they are on would be lethal for the opioid naive. The doctors that do work there are often fresh faced registrars on their first year in psychiatry. They just want to get their cases done and get out - there's no handover or treatment plans. If there are treatment plans they aren't followed.
    The nurses are at best apathetic and at worst outright hostile. And who can blame them? The people nurses deal with are people that have in all likelihood hurt them in the past.
    The "system" seems to be one in which people with say, a short prison sentence for a misdemeanour comes out a hardened criminal. Just about the only thing that is well kept are the medication administration records - and that is only because there are legislative penalties all up and down the chain for mismanagement and "lost" doses.
    The prospect for rehabilitation seems to me to be a sick joke. There is no redemption to be found behind those walls.
