    This is very helpful. I'm student teaching in a middle school and when I get behind on my detailed lesson plans required by my university, it's hard to imagine being capable of being an actual (hired) professional. This gives me hope. :)

    • @theadhdacademic537

      Yes the university required plans are generally way more detailed than required when you are actually teaching. These days they usually fit on a post it. Good luck and hang in there!

      You can totally make it! I really struggle with staying caught up as well, and I'm still here teaching after 12 years (the last 7 at the same school). I'm gradually improving each year. This year, I just submitted my trimester plans way ahead of time for the first time. Just keep going, keep growing, and keep doing your best! =)

      If anything, it'll make you a more empathetic professor/teacher, as you'll know the struggle, and will be able to mentor your students to use various tips that you've learned along the way.

I'm meticulously organised but to the point at cant see past the details and I get distracted, sent off course by them. Great to find your RUclips channel here.

My plan time is either spent cleaning something or finding myself in a rabbit hole when I’m lesson planning instead of grading, ACTUALLY planning the lesson, etc.

    Thank you for sharing! This was pretty helpful and answered some of the questions I have. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and will be starting a teaching degree this year. I just want to reassure myself that all the organisational requirements are going to be possible for me! There's already so much reading involved and I'm learning to skim more often. But giving verbal notes also sounds like a great tactic because you can convey your tone better and open up dialogue with the student about the work instead of just passing a judgement and leaving them with it.

I imagine that sometimes you get comments about your way of working or feel like an imposter, but you are doing an awesome job at managing it. Small thing, as an adhd student, verbal commentary is nice but some added words, especially the positive or important ones in writing are important since we forget positives easily.

    Hello! I would love to hear more in depth tools you use for grading. I teach undergraduate nursing students & my evaluations from students are overall positive, BUT that I am so slow at returning feedback. They hate that, and embarrassingly enough, I have things left unfinished at the end of the semester. I also struggle at working at the office, because colleagues stop by and interrupt my work flow often. It’s such a struggle & I am not sure if this job is for me, even after 4 years of teaching.

    I just graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. Last weekend actually! :) I have taken a position for a teacher on her maternity leave. It’s 1st grade (which I know is a whole different ballgame from you) however, I REALLY am struggling with behavior management which is from elementary-secondary so maybe you can give some tips.
    I struggle with marking conduct because I don’t want to stop what I am doing during instruction and take the time to write it out because 1.) I start to get overwhelmed and anxious. I struggle a lot with putting things into simple words without too much detail, so I need time to sit and think how I need to say things. And 2.) if i am not occupying their every moment, the class gets so out of hand….
    So I say to myself “I’ll just do it at the end of the day when I have time.” Then the end of the day comes, and so much behavior went on I don’t even remember what to put… so i just don’t. And everyone goes home with A’s. The problem is that I am telling the students they are getting conduct marks, but they never actually go home with them, which I know is not helping me bc the students 1.) know nothing will happen to them (no consequences ) and 2.) I am not getting any support from home (which sometimes is all they need)
    Any suggestions on ways I can keep track of conduct efficiently/simply for my ADHD brain?
    Thanks so much!

    • @theadhdacademic537
      @theadhdacademic537  3 года назад

      I’d worry less about conduct and more about engagement in the lessons. Get some post cards. Each Friday say you’ll be sending 3-5 positive notes home. Focus on celebrating small wins. Did a student who usually causes a commotion get a question right? Help a friend? Make a huge deal out of sharing with their guardians.

      I left teaching and it was the best thing I did. I now know I wasn't developmentally ready at 23. I worked caring for challenging kids in child protection for 5 years. It was a crisis driven role where I had to think on my feet. My education expertise was a huge benefit to the team. I thrived and was able to slowly develop better organisation skills. I also developed the skill of not beating myself up over what is outside of my control or if I couldn't get work done. I have just returned to teaching at 34 (left at 26) and I find it much easier and less stressful. I am in the process of getting diagnosed after the school psychologist recommended it.
      It's funny... have a kid with ADHD but couldn't spot it in myself until I was tricked into seeing it.
