I too, wear out socks under my heel. I discovered long ago that knitting heel stitch (k1, sl1) to give extra padding while knitting the sock. Then I weave in more yarn on the inside of the heel through the slip 1 stitches. If it wears out after all that, I'll darn it. Most of my socks are knit from Bearfoot (Mountain Colors) unfortunately discontinued, that had a lot of mohair in the yarn anyway so that helped a lot. I also knit at a denser gauge that suggested (usually 8-9 sts/inch).
Sharon I 100% agree DK sock are just THE BEST!!! I would encourage you to add mohair to your fingering weight sock yarn or even try doubling it (gotta check your gauge 😉). Your yarn is always SO beautiful and I always enjoy your podcasts! Glad you had a good time on your trip!!
