That is a classic Bee Hive Hairdo 🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉, My mother use to wear the Bee Hive 😂🤣 It takes about an hour & a half to do that hairstyle, back in the day. I don't think it's trendy now.
Yes! Love to watch Gospel Jubilee just before church every Sunday morning! The Goodmans would get us all going!! Thank you Jesus for sending them to us all!!
If it’s not the best example of southern gospel singing it definitely is the best example of High Hair Doos. Lol. I absolutely love the Happy Goodman Family. They are a one of a kind and my all time favorites. I sure miss them.
I love seeing "Gospel Jubliee" reminds me of being @ my Gran's house on a Saturday , after The Archies, American Bandstand & Soul Train, Ch. 3 outta Chattanooga would air "Gospel Jubliee" I can still hear Vestal singing in that unique tenor of hers "JU-Bilee" "JU-Bilee" you are invited to this Happy Jubilee" . What a sweet soul she talked about touring with Hank Williams Sr. during the 1950s in Alambama on Grand Ole Opry, RIP Vestal , forever in our hearts. Many Thanx for posting this !
Since the beginning of time, there hasn't been a group of anointed singers to perfect the art of conveying the salvation story than this group of gifted singers.."The Happy Goodman Family"
The "Happy Goodmans" are truly livin' in Canaan Land--Now! We miss ya friends, Heaven is dearer knowing the Goodman's are there singin with all of God's singers!!
Always enjoyed the Goodmans! One of the smartest moves they ever made was bringing Eddie Crook in on piano! While Howard was fun to watch, Eddie was the perfect pianist for the Goodmans. FIVE STARS!
NO ONE with any sense, any love for REAL Gospel music and any love for a beautiful family in the Lord would ever thumbs down this video! *Awesome!* Thanks for sharing, Kevin!!
Man... There just has not been a group to match the sound of the Goodmans ! They are top shelf! Love the way Rusty drops the guitar, picks up mike, and slides stand with his foot all while bouncing to the beat and singing his line . They had it in their blood and it shows!
This just in: Results have just come in from the National Laboratories and I can now confirm the Goodman’s were indeed happy. Congratulations to all involved.
I remember well the gospel jubilee on Sunday mornings before we left for church and I also remember all these old groups from way back and I have realized that they had something the groups of today don't have, they did it for God not money.
Howard was a super human being and I loved to "watch" him play; but musically, as far as knowledge and SKILLS are concerned, Eddie was light years advanced. You are correct, no one could sound like Howard for sure. He was self-taught, but people still loved his playing.
I did! The Hinson's are also on the top of my all-time favorite southern gospel groups! They indeed sing this song very well, I love it when Chris Hawkins reaches those high notes--she is the best!! Thanks for the reply brother!
Hinsons, Goodmans, Kingsmen, Inspirations, Dixie Echoes I was fortunate enough to meet them all back in the 70's. How? Well I "worked" (just hung out mostly) at the WRIP radio/tv station in Chattanooga and was good friends with Sid Hughes the dj/station manager there who was also a huge promoter (not as big as Rev Mull mind you) of gospel concerts and they would drop by to appear on his tv show. Sid was a good guy and won several Dove awards for being the top gospel DJ. I was just a kid in high school but he let me watch him do his shows and he taught me about the turntables, carts etc they used for queuing up the next song or commercial etc.
I get up and listen to The Goodman's every Sunday morning I don't get out much but I make it a point to have a little church myself every Sunday morning and I've read through these comments and it sure does sound like a lot of you know the peace that I get listening to this music I'm almost 40 I just wish I would have found this when I was younger it ain't never too late to change though and I'm working on my road to Canaan now and I'm not the first to say but I am so grateful that God give us the happy Goodman family
The Happy Goodmans really get the chuckwagon rolling downhill on this one! LOL on Howard's wardrobe fail - they really worked hard to match and dress with class in those days. I'd love to hear the brothers pick on him about that one . . .
@4freespeech As you saw Vestal's hair back in those days, it was actually 2 wigs that were piled on top of her own real hair. She did cut her hair, only to be attacked by a group of women at a revival meeting some years back. I read this in her autobiography entitled: "Vestal, Wouldn't Take Nothing for my Journey Now". It's an amazing read for anyone who loved this grand lady of Christ. Howard and Vestal, along with Rusty and Sam were true warriors of the faith.
Egypt was once my home, I was a slave Helpless in sin did roam, love-light did crave, but when I looked up to heaven's dome Christ came to save, I'm living in Canaan now Living on Canaan's side, Egypt behind Crossed over Jordan wide, gladness to find My soul is satisfied, no longer blind Living with Jesus up in Canaan right now Satan may have you bound with fetters strong, Look up to higher ground it'will not be long till Christ the Saviour your soul has found You'll sing this song, I'm living in Canaan now Living on Canaan's side, Egypt behind Crossed over Jordan wide, gladness to find My soul is satisfied, no longer blind Living with Jesus up in Canaan right now Living on Canaan's side, Egypt behind Crossed over Jordan wide, gladness to find My soul is satisfied..., (my soul is satisfied!) Living with Jesus up in Canaan right now!
Vestal was most definitely the queen of the beehive. noone else has ever wore it better...I know it was a wig/ hairpiece but it really complimented her looks and facial features.
My Mama had one of those and when I was in sixth grade she came home from work. I was out in the yard but saw her from afar. She had gotten a hair cut. I walked up to her with my mouth open almost in shock. Oh, do I miss her. She has been in glory since 207.
I remember watching The Gospel Jubilee with my grandmother when I was a little girl back in the 60's. I LOVED Sister Vestal so much!!!! She had the tallest, most perfect beehive God ever created!!!
Notice that around 1:16, the tv crew messes up and puts the camera on Vestal thinking it's time for her "my soul is satisfied" line, but that's Sam's line at that point. Vestal's line they were looking for does happen at 1:32 and then they miss it.
Somehow while watching, about mid-way through... . you will find yourself just smiling from ear to ear, and remembering what it was like to rush around on Sunday mornings, getting ready for church while the Jubilee or Mull's Singing Convention was on in the background. Vestel was an endless supply of voice and volume - and thank heaven for these recordings because I don't think we'll see the likes of this kind of talent or energy pass this way any time soon.
You are right, @Gods2ndFavoriteBassPlyr! The sad part is if someone DID pop up showing this kind of talent, they would die penniless for lack of an audience capable of appreciating what they were doing. And the thing the young ones do not realize is that this is a song right out of the hymnbook! The two guys even talk about singing this when they were young... probably singing the shaped notes! I am not sure, but it might be in the public domain. Not at all like today's money-changers music. Today, if you are going to perform a song, you had better have your papers in order. Lawyers will be swarming on you like fire ants!
The "Happy Goodman family" may all be with the Lord now but there legacy of rich recordings of the gospel message continues to edify the body of Christ and lure lost souls to the Heavenly Kingdom !
beautiful song, love The Goodman's----------love Vestal's barrel curls---------wonderful times, memories-----------------thank you for sharing--------Blessings~
That was a wig she was wearing -- she mentioned it in an interview many years later, and said that it was in a box on her closet shelf. Wigs were very popular in the late '60s and '70s and Vestal finally stopped wearing hers and went with her natural hair again.
It will be of interest and reassurance to note that the piano player entering from the right side of the viewer’s screen was thoroughly interrogated, had his documents be found in good order and was found to be, indeed, happy.
This is from the Gaither Video Series: Gospel Singing Jubilee Volumes 1-6 (which was a gospel singing tv program that ran from around 1965-1984) Might still be able to order them. Originaly came out in the mid 90's.
These clips aren't on the series that Gaither put out. I've got all the Goodman ones, so I was a bit hesitant about buying this DVD, but was very pleased to find they weren't repeats from the Gaither videos!!
Yep, he was "unique" for sure. Actually, most of what he did at the keyboard was not at all complicated, but Howard knew how to "sell it". Bottom line: He was a WONDERFUL Christian man who had a calling on his life and he blessed untold hundreds of thousands with his singing, playing and testimony. THAT, we can all agree on. When it comes to piano technique however, give me Eddie Crook anytime! LOL!
@almostfamous2002 There is no where in the Bible that says women can't cut there hair. I think women should look like women & men should look like men. I believe there needs to be a difference.
I'm calling crap on that comment Lee because Vestal Goodman confessed on one of the Gaither shows that she used to keep her big hair in a box under her bed until it was show time...
Well Vestal certainly got over her aversion to makeup when she got older. I wonder how old she is here? I'm not bashing her, though, I love her singing.
Bottom line is that Vestal was a very godly woman who truly loved the Lord. When George Jones was in the hospital he didn't want to see anyone but Vestal. She lead him to the Lord.
Happy Goodman's rule! As far as the dress-up stuff, to each his own. Don't see much wrong with make up & jewelry, but I must agree with the modest attire. Just last week one of our usherettes wore a mini-skirt while she passed the collection plate. Not a good impression for visitors. Churches should have a dress code.
Where are you people? Sign me up! You seem to have awareness that the human culture is destroyed by sexual saturation, and idolizing entertainers, etc. (vanity) Where are you??? -- please send me your community brochure!!!
+dobb673 -- They're ALL n Heaven with Jesus now.. They can't send you anything. I pray you're saved b Christ's saving Blood and Salvation and THEN you'll be able to ask them for anything.
@almostfamous2002 I too go to a Holiness church if you dont mind me asking where do you attend church? To add to you 1 Corinthians 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. 1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
That is quite a bun she's sportin'!! I admit, I like these old songs better than the praise-&-worship mush of today.
That old time religion is what will save this world.

This maybe one of the best examples of Southern Gospel singing.
If it’s not the best example of southern gospel singing it definitely is the best example of High Hair Doos. Lol. I absolutely love the Happy Goodman Family. They are a one of a kind and my all time favorites. I sure miss them.

Amen ! You can't beat Southern Gospel. And this was LIVE!! Howard could sure tickle the ivories ! Hope they have the Gospel Jubilee Show in Heaven ! !
The "Happy Goodmans" are truly livin' in Canaan Land--Now! We miss ya friends, Heaven is dearer knowing the Goodman's are there singin with all of God's singers!!
Sister Vestal had some power in those lungs!
Always enjoyed the Goodmans! One of the smartest moves they ever made was bringing Eddie Crook in on piano! While Howard was fun to watch, Eddie was the perfect pianist for the Goodmans. FIVE STARS!
One day closer to meeting Jesus! Amen!
NO ONE with any sense, any love for REAL Gospel music and any love for a beautiful family in the Lord would ever thumbs down this video! *Awesome!* Thanks for sharing, Kevin!!
Miss them very much ! I'll see them again!!

Vestals hairdo beehive wig was a piece of art. Who ever made it did the best construction work of their life!
Love Vestal!
My my this takes me back to Sunday Morning Jubilee
As a kid we always had the Jubilee on before church. I didn't come to Christ till I was 18, but those songs had an impact.
Praise God!
This just in: Results have just come in from the National Laboratories and I can now confirm the Goodman’s were indeed happy. Congratulations to all involved.
So did I - some of my earliest memories are my parents watching this show early Sunday morning.
My name is Darryl Jackson and I did know the Goodman's vary well. My family was good friends with them ❤ I was born in Madisonville Ky. in 1940
that is really cool to me being such a fan
Canaan is kept by the hand of God! Lovely song, Wonderful group.
Absolutely magnificent and happy!
I remember well the gospel jubilee on Sunday mornings before we left for church and I also remember all these old groups from way back and I have realized that they had something the groups of today don't have, they did it for God not money.
What a way to start sunday morning
What a blessing of a song and what great singers!
Howard was a super human being and I loved to "watch" him play; but musically, as far as knowledge and SKILLS are concerned, Eddie was light years advanced. You are correct, no one could sound like Howard for sure. He was self-taught, but people still loved his playing.
I like this kind of singing😊
Praise the eternal ancient of days,!
Praise God!
Man I love Southern gospel!
Love it when they do a shift change on the piano 😀
What a way to start my Sunday morning while getting ready for church ⛪️ the happy goodmans I miss them
My favorite southern gospel group
I love this..I lived close to them...
I did! The Hinson's are also on the top of my all-time favorite southern gospel groups! They indeed sing this song very well, I love it when Chris Hawkins reaches those high notes--she is the best!! Thanks for the reply brother!

Satan may have you bound with fetters strong,
Look up to higher ground it'will not be long

You'll sing this song,
I'm living in Canaan now
Living on Canaan's side, Egypt behind

I always wondered how she hat that hairdo.
13 years ago!!! And I’m watching in 2022
It's never too late brother..!
and this was taped in like 1968 or so
I remember watching The Gospel Jubilee with my grandmother when I was a little girl back in the 60's. I LOVED Sister Vestal so much!!!! She had the tallest, most perfect beehive God ever created!!!
Sunday morning memories...the Happy Goodman Family and Jubilee.

Eddie is good, but Howard is still my favorite! Nobody else could get a piano to sound like Howard did!
How cheerful song it is! Merry& Happy! good.
I love it
They are appearing here on this video, the "Gospel Jubilee" television show. I loved to see that show every sunday morning before church!

@LivingMindfully1975 That's right, I think they call it a bee hive, don't they? God bless & long live the Happy Goodman's !
Love this group.
one of my favorite groups. Can really feel spirit when they sing. . Singing in Heaven now.
Wow, Eddie Crooke was just a kid !!!
A god could not possibly be pleased by this.
Doesnt get much better than this
Ok.... I'm feeling nostalgic...
The fur trim just kills me.
I cut my spiritual teeth listening to this happy family singing the gospel! The Speer Family, Johnny Cook and others. What wonderful memories!

That my friend is the beehive beufont hairdo!
Vestel with the high hair, but no hankerchief. Rusty looking like a young Conway Twitty.

my granny still wears one(its about 3 feet high off her head) lol
Sorry to say, that's not a wig. My mother new her personally and her hair was 100% real.
I'm calling crap on that comment Lee because Vestal Goodman confessed on one of the Gaither shows that she used to keep her big hair in a box under her bed until it was show time...
@@Nunofurdambiznez keyword until showtime
Anybody know what year this was?
Does anyone have the intro to this show where they were singing "JU-Bilee"? That's what I remember most about that show.
@4speech: I hear you. My church is a holiness church.
Well Vestal certainly got over her aversion to makeup when she got older. I wonder how old she is here? I'm not bashing her, though, I love her singing.

Who knew Clint Eastwood played the piano for the Goodman Family? LOL! (I know it was Eddie Crook)
LOL!!
I thought the same thing, really looked like Clint Eastwood at first glance...lol

Vestal rocks. That hair-do is the main cause of ozone depletion. Too much blue-can Aqua Net
@almostfamous2002: 1 Corinthians 11. If a woman has long hair, it is for
her glory, for God has given it to her for a covering. How long is long?
Was that Les Beasley at 1:48?
yes it was
Is that Clint Eastwood on piano?

Wasn't Vestal's beehive just a wig?
In Vestal's case it was a wig. Two wigs to be exact.
: LOL!...
