But that is much harder because someone thought it was smart to save money by massive cuts to lon existing government agencies with permanent government workers, who become familiarized with that agency and how it works. There are good reasons why NOAA had grown over the years. They do long term collection of data. The moist gulf air made the conditions ripe for a storm, nothing unusual, but the ferocity of the rainfall was a rare event. Flash flooding here is normal. The deluge hit at 4:30 am when campers were sleeping. Within 30 minutes the flooding was dangerous. There weren't enough people at that hour to wake those at risk. As many as 750 girls were at Camp Mystic, 23 were not evacuated in time.

The whole reason is to make it state priority that way one person can’t stop funding because of another person’s political view!!! Texas officials provided search and rescue updates Saturday on a flash flood that has killed at least 27 people, nine of which are children, and left some 27 others missing, a day after authorities blamed the National Weather Service forecasts for not predicting “the amount of rain that we saw” after the agency faced federal budget and staffing cuts, according to W. Recent cuts, mandated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration, have significantly impacted the National Weather Service (NWS), leading to staffing shortages and concerns about the quality of weather forecasts. ... It never gets like that.
I think I can recall one time in my 67 years where we had almost 6 in of rain in 24 hours but it wasn't a downpour. It was just steady rain all day long. One and a half or 2 in is extremely heavy rain for us in a 24-hour period.
I can't imagine what 10 or 12 inches would do to us.
My heart goes out to those people affected.

I’m from Oregon, too and lived in Texas- San Antonio and El Paso- for almost 4 years. Their ground doesn’t soak up the water like Oregon ground does. It floods easily, unfortunately. I would see even small amounts of rain in Texas cause flooding and standing water.

I can't tell the terrain from the few videos that I've seen.
Up and down the Oregon coast. It's quite mountainous right before it gets to the actual coast and there would be a lot of small communities just totally washed away Because of this steep hillsides and roadways next to the creeks and rivers. That's of course where the towns are located too, so I can't begin to imagine the landslides and things that could happen at least here on the coast. It wouldn't be pretty.
I'm guessing those areas in Texas are relatively flat?
