Not a horror story, yet our MC is cheated on , loses his wife, is accused and sentenced, robbed of his freedom for life, thrown into a pit of corruption, ignorance and hopelessness. All of which is horrible..
And it still manages to be an uplifting story.
Freakin' amazing! And an excellent movie as well, worth rewatching.

For how many times I've watched Shawshank, how did I not know it was written by Stephen King. I just did a quick search of movie posters, and King is no where on them. Usually if a movie is an adaptation, they have that front and center.

    • @mikesbookreviews

Much like Stand By me, they intentionally kept his name off posters because they didn't want folks to think it was horror.

Ill never forget a young lady in high school i had a crush on thought i was 'DIFFERENT' because i loved stephen king...skip forward a few years and we stayed "friends"
Then she began to tell me how AMAZING stand by me (aka) the body...and SHAEWSHANK...the green MILE...i didn't tell her it was written by stephen king until after one evening of love. TILL this day we have a great laugh 😃

SHAWSHANK arguably invented the Morgan Freeman voiceover, which has since become a movie staple.

My brother just moved out from my parents house (he’s 20 and 8 years younger than me anyway,) before he moved ANY time Shawshank was on mom would holler at Ray and he’s ALWAYS come and watch it with her. They’ve prolly seen that movie 50 times. I loved the story too.
She’s also do it for The Green Mike and ray would come up too and watch.

Just finished Different Seasons as an introduction to King on your reccomendation. Loved most of the stories. Shawshank was absolutely amazing and the friendship between Red and Andy was stellar. I'll be picking up Pet Sematary after this I think.

I read this story before the movie came out. So i as a kid, i was massively confused by the Sisters. I actually thought they were a group of women in the prison. The movie cleared a lot of it up.

I was a kid in the 1980s, I never read King or saw the movies. I knew who he was in vague terms--that horror writer. Whatever. Then I read this novella. Such a great story. I have read other stories of his now. While I will never be a horror fan, he definitely deserves the hype.

Quite an introduction their Sai Mike. I agree completely about the length and wish for more here. In fact, this is one of the few instances where I can read the novella in less time than it takes me to watch the movie. Haha
In any event, this is brilliantly uplifting obviously and very worthy of it's status in both literature and film, even if my inner cynic does often prefer his darker storytelling. Stoked to throw on APT PUPIL right now and here your thoughts there. Cheers brotha!

Definitely could have used more of this story. And thanks on the intro. I’m sure you know how hard it is to pick just 1-2 great lines from his stories. That was as short as I could get from The Body. I refused to cut that beautiful passage down.

  • @laguy8181
    @laguy8181 3 года назад

This is a BEAUTIFUL story and I have told so many people that this was his when they say they don’t like him cause they don’t like scary. The adaptation is beautiful as well. I think the ending of the book is great because it allows the readers imagination to run wild. I do prefer the ending in the film and I like how the film shows how the leader of the sister’s gets busted up while still being true to the book because the book says no one knows how it happened as the movie does too.

It pains me to say this, but the last time I read RHASR I really missed the ending of the movie.
What Darabont added pushes the same buttons for me as the return to Boulder at the end of The Stand. It's not really necessary, and some people think it's drawn out, but it's really the making of the entire thing as far as I'm concerned. The circle isn't really complete until Andy and Red meet again.
Mind you, I like the Scouring of the Shire at the end of Lord of the Rings, so I'm clearly on a different page to a lot of people when it comes winding a book down!

It's kind of like E.T. in that there is certainly room for a sequel, but all it would do is diminish things. But I could see King dropping mentions of these characters, perhaps even crossing them over, in future books within his Multiverse.
