I looked up the dimensions of the baseball field inside Alamodome and it is quite like the old Baker Bowl in Philadelphia (except shorter right up the middle). That, and being indoors with a capacity for baseball of just a few hundred less than our old Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Definitely not BC Place or the HHH Metronome, but suitable for temporary use for baseball, basketball, arena and Stadium concerts, as well as a more permanent use for soccer or American football.

what i don't understand is wouldn't it be too easy to get a hr on that field? i mean what are the measurements? it looks like the right field wall is 40 feet from the edge of the infield
Granted the right field wall isn't far enough, but for a temporary venue for MLB exhibition games before the season starts, its okay... The Alamodome was built to be the football stadium for UTSA, but has failed to attract a NFL team. Too small for the NFL, but too big for UTSA. For a while it was the venue for the San Antonio Spurs NBA, while its been used for hockey, soccer, baseball, and rodeo... Basically a multi-purpose dome venue... If San Antonio ever landed a NFL or MLB franchise San Antonio would have to build a new stadium, but could use the Alamodome as a temporary venue until a new stadium is built. Most likely new locker rooms/clubhouses for a major league teams would have to be added... San Antonio could knock down the seating bowl beyond the right field fence to increase its size if necessary to please MLB...
They shouldn’t have had any lower deck at all in the outfield. That field is tiny. Granted, that would probably bring the capacity down to around 35,000 seats that wouldn’t have part of the outfield out of view but that capacity would be okay, at least for temporary use.
For a few seasons, the Rangers played their final two games of spring training each year at the Alamodome (different opponents each year). The Rangers were trying to increase their fan support in San Antonio.
It was never intended for baseball. The minor league team has their own outdoor stadium, but it only seats about 9000 which was too small for the major league exhibition games, so they used the dome instead. The crowds for each of these games in San Antonio were surprisingly big.

Why did they put dirt under the Astroturf if they weren't going to directly play on it when there's infill for the turf?
for the bases and the pitching mound
In baseball the infield is slightly higher then the outfield. An MLB field must have slight pitch from infield to outfield.
Probably to soften up the field for balls chopped on the ground. It would give a truer bounce than astroturf over concrete.
