- Rugby is a market town close to the River Avon in eastern Warwickshire, England. It had a population of 78,117 at the 2021 census, making it the second largest city in Warwickshire. It is the main settlement within the larger Borough of Rugby, which had a population of 114,400 in 2021.
Rugby is situated on the eastern edge of Warwickshire, near the borders of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Rugby is the easternmost city in the West Midlands region, with the nearby county boundaries also marking the regional boundary with the East Midlands. It is 134 km north of London, 48 km east-southeast of Birmingham, 18.5 km east of Coventry, 29 km north-west of Northampton and 31 km south-southwest of Leicester.
Rugby became a market town in 1255. Rugby School was founded in 1567 as a grammar school for local boys, but by the 18th century it had achieved a national reputation as a public school. This school is the birthplace of rugby football, which, according to legend, was invented in 1823 by a rugby schoolboy named William Webb Ellis. Rugby remained a small and fairly insignificant town until the mid-19th century, when a major railway junction was established there, which promoted the development of industry and a rapid increase in population.
The modern town of Rugby is an amalgamation of the original town with the former settlements of Bilton, Hillmorton, Brownover and Newbold-on-Avon, which were incorporated into Rugby in 1932 when the town became a borough, all except Brownover. It still has its former village centre. Rugby also includes the areas of New Bilton, Overslade, Hillside and the partially built Halton housing development. Rugby has spread almost to the villages of Clifton-upon-Dunsmore, Cawston, Dunchurch and Long Lawford.
