    Thanks so much for the review. I have joined several of Fat Quarter Shop's stitch-a-long projects, and my budget is stretched enough with just those. I would love to try Aurifil someday, but if you're going to spent $4.75 on cotton, then get NPI Silk for almost the same price. And I cannot afford any silk right now. Fortunately, I purchased almost all of the colors of NPI while I was still working. Planned stashing -- which I'm glad I did. Take care. "See" you soon. Kate B.

    Thanks for the review. I wish you had talked more about coverage on different count fabrics. I also just want to point out that with DMC , you don’t have another mass produced object, the spool, left over when the thread is gone. I’ll take the kinks from bobbins any day.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад

      True about the spool, but at least it’s wooden and biodegradeable, and I’m sure most people would reuse them. I am going to be doing a video on showing the coverage of various brands of black floss. Not quite what you’re asking about here, but hopefully still helpful.

    Thank you Jan for your update, sO hope you are having a good break. I saw handwork maniac on floss tube using Sulky blendables 12 wt for pandemic so I bought 4 spools and here in the UK they are £2.70 a spool. I am loving it and a really good alternative for those who can't justify buying silk at the moment ,or at anytime for that matter. It is working up a t treat , no splitting of thread (it is one strand) and being varigated no change of colour. Aurifil sounds interesting ,I will have a look at their website. Always good to get a true review thank you.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад

      Yeah, Sulky is a great thread, too. Glad to see that that one is reasonably priced for you. I’d be interested to know what price you are seeing for the Aurifil floss. In Canadian dollars, someone commented that it’s 13.50. Crazy!

    • @carolreid9755
      @carolreid9755 4 года назад

      I have checked Aurifil 4.86 dollars per spool of 50 m. Sulky 3.50 dollars 300 m. Both of these are 12 weight.

  • @frederikaunterberger6695
    @frederikaunterberger6695 4 года назад

    Hi Jan I think you get a lot more floss on a Aurifloss reel so that makes it cheaper.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад +1

      You get 18 yds vs 8.8 yds. So, buy 2.5 skeins of DMC which would be roughly the same as 18 yds, you would still only be spending, at the highest cost I’ve seen here in the States, maybe around $2.50 rather than $4.74.

    I am wondering how you are liking the Aufofil now that you have stitched longer with it at this date? I chuckle as I was certain it must have more length on it than DMC, but could not find how long. SO THANKs for that tidbit too. Enjoy your flosstubes. Ordered some French patterns today Lol. I really was surfing thru your library today and got side-tracked trying to find your start of Prim. I think I have it narrowed down now and will head to that one next. If not the one no worries as I am enjoying looking thru them all immensely. (Still working full time, so my sewing room is neglected, but I certainly am still managing to supply my retirement fund with no trouble thanks to your help!)

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  3 года назад +1

      Hi Ginger! I’m always happy to help a fellow stitcher stock up on her retirement fund! That is very important! As for the Aurafil floss, no, I don’t particularly care for it. For some reason, it feels more papery to me. (That sounds weird, doesn’t it. LOL) I don’t know how to describe it really, it’s like it’s drier, and it doesn’t have a nice sheen to it like mercerized cotton. I also think it knots more easily. So while I am glad that I tried it, and am happy I did the Prim Stitch series in the called for floss, I won’t go out of my way to use it again.

    Thanks for the review. I use Aurifil floss exclusively for my piecing and quilting. It is a great quality thread. Sounds like the floss is equally as good. But, like you mentioned, their products are pricey but definitely worth it if you can afford them.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад

      Yes, and I guess that’s what it comes down to, if you can afford it, why not splurge. If you can’t afford it, there are wonderful alternatives. I don’t think Aurifil will ever replace DMC as the go to thread for stitchers, though, not at that price and color range.

    How about just using the black spool...you know like the DMC 310 vs Anchor black vs Sulky black as far as coverage? Age old question I know but I would buy just the black if it was way better. Seems like as of late my 310 frays more that I have noticed before but may just be older skein. Just wanted to know your thoughts and hope your staying safe and having a better month🧡

    Aurifloss is my favorite. For me, I think it’s cheaper than DMC. Dmc has the cost of floss bags, rings, bobbins, etc. I seem to waste a lot of DMC as it gets balled up and knotted and has more thread breakage. I like the wood spools too and use those for different crafting projects and for binding.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад +1

      All good points, though I would say that everyone has much different experience with DMC. But the important thing is that there are so many options for all of us.

    Thx for the review. I was curious about aurafil, I am using sulky now. It is very nice for the money and of course DMC has the colors and the price. I do not like doing bobbins I get a 3 ring notebook put in baseball card saver pages, use Velcro dots to keep the floss in each card saver. It is pictured on my Instagram a couple times. yarn.sticks if u would like to look. Love your floss tubes.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад +1

      Thank you, Rebecca! I will check it out. I am currently in the process of changing up my floss storage system...again! Lol. Do you find the floss gets caught on the Velcro dots at all?

    • @rebeccafelker8851
      @rebeccafelker8851 4 года назад

      Jan Hicks Creates it can, but not often or bad. All storage ideas seem to have an issue. I like this as I can just flip thru to look for a color, saves time hunting for the right color. Try just one page maybe and use 1/2 to 3/4 in size Velcro dots. The small ones do not work well.

    Aurifil thread is wonderful for quilt piecing, makes your blocks super accurate, highest quality of thread I’ve used. But the price of the embroidery floss, $13.50 in Canada 🇨🇦 per spool is not in my budget. But funny that you should do this video because I just bought a few different weights in black
    12, 28, 40, 50, 80
    And I’m testing them out for back stitching. I have a project that suggests 1 thread bs in an area , 2 threads in another & 3 threads in a few spots. I thought I’d try different thicknesses of thread and see if gave me the same results.

    • @JanHicksCreates
      @JanHicksCreates  4 года назад +1

      Oh, that’s a cool thought. FQS has a sampler pack of different Aurifil threads that I’ve ordered to try different weights. Someone also requested I do a video comparing coverage of different brands of black threads, so I’ll be doing that, too. But yeah, 13.50 for a spool is just impossible.

      The only experience I have with Sullivans thus far is with punch needle. It seemed to be a perfectly fine floss from what I could tell from that. But someone did request I do a review video comparing the blacks of a bunch of the different flosses and their coverage. Sullivans is one of them, so stay tuned for that.

    Good review. I don't like the price of it nor that "wood" bobbin. I prefer acid free products only in my stash. However, even if they were sold in plastic bobbins, there's not enough incentive to purchase them at that price. I'd go for silk first, which will outlast most cotton fibers IMO.
