    Hi Nigel, You are an inspiration! Clip and grow is my preferred method for all gardening tasks, whether big or small. As a novice and small time bonsai cultivator (got my fisrt one only 30 years ago at the Boston Spring Garden Show), you have helped me tremendously. I have a question and a comment: Can you differentiate between a ficus a benjamina and a micro carpa?
    And for those of us who have hearing issues, why do some of your videos have CC and others do not?
    Stay healthy

    hey mate great vid. you've probably answered this heaps of times already, but how do you get so many aerial roots?? is it because you're growing in high humidity? how would you recommend i achieve that in dry southern AU - should i put sphagnum moss on the trunk or something?

    there is nothing like doing the dishes and watching the bonsai zone. though i have a question about my 4 y/o ficus benjamina(not 100% sure). It has been sitting by my radiator since summer and all has been going great, untill i noticed today that the trunk has begun to wrinkle and leaves have been dropping. I scraped the wood and it was still green. I'm concerned because I had another ficus, which died a while after getting the same wrinkles. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do? I have already moved the plant away from the radiator. Also would you ever consider doing fan bonsai critique? Cheers :)

    Are those just branches that you wired to go into the ground to become a root? Is that how that works? I guess I should watch 1-3 😂😂

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 года назад

      They are aerial roots that come from the trunk in humid weather and then I guided them down into the soil.

    U need to remove aerials on branches or whole branches with aerial n plant them as saperate trees. Becos of the aerials on branches it gets double vigor n it creates tree within the tree. It may create problems in future. Too much of thickening of that branches.

    Imo it does not look like a natural Fig, they do not have such a clear main trunk reaching so far up, instead they like always have multiple trunks. Also the first branches are not horizontally enough and do not spread far enough, the images you have shown of figs that were closer to your Figs look have probably been treated by humans to look this way.
    I think your previous decisions to make the trunk visible do not fit your now later decision to bring it into a natural shape, you simplified the base structure too much for that. Also the branches do not snake around, they are straight. It was probably possible to correct the look by wiring to get it closer to look natural, but you do not seem to ever have interest in improving your style diversity by adding new techniques.
    This does not mean, I would not enjoy your videos, I am just making critical comments to add another perspective.
    The problem is, a tree will only grow in it's natural pattern, if it has it's natural size, because the growth patterns come from the physical conditions that apply to a certain statical balance, according to it's weight's relation to material properties, which means, gravity does form a trees natural growth patterns, that is the reason why your tree does not look naturally and also the reason for wiring, it means to apply a force to simulate the natural forces, if used well, that a miniature tree lacks to endure during it's development.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, I'm hoping as tree grows larger and thicker it will get more of a natural Ficus look to it. Whenever you wire a Ficus it puts permanent wire marks in the trunk and I would rather wait for new branching to get the lower branches to be more horizontal or drooping. I'm sure this will also come in the future. I made the trunk high on purpose to get a medium to large tree in the many years ahead! I expect the tree to double in size in the next 5 years.Thank you!
