Hi Paul. I don’t know if you still update this channel but you’re a true hero to me. You’ve played on so many classic records and you’re the reason I picked up a guitar many years ago. Thank you for all your hard work.
This has to be the single best rhythm guitar video I've ever seen on RUclips. I've watched MANY different tutorials from many prominent RUclipsrs and many obscure ones, and this one singlehandedly tops them all. It's straight to the point w/ no BS, and is practical while being fun at the same time. I thank you sir.
Hello. "Thank you" can't reflect the gratitude for sharing this piece of history for guitar players. Make a new one, with up to date quality, and all this years crafting your art, we'll all buy it. Rhythm is everything. God bless you Paul Jackson Jr.
Probably why Paul Jackson is a GREAT as he is cause he UNDERSTANDS how to be a rhythm guitarist and he nails it perfectly. He has a sound that is AMAZING
I've always said how important it is to be a good, solid rhythm guitarist. Everyone wants to be the star of the show. "Lead Guitarist" Many players can not do rhythm for several reasons. -Thank you for posting this video.
Fantastic beggining with the two cues of soloists and rythm guitarrists. I adore Paul's technic. A real SOLID support for the rest of the band. Not just random notes disconected.
3 AHA! moments watching Paul Jackson here. 🥁Long time Drummer learning guitar on my own until I get my drums back. Lotta good teachers on RUclips but.. I wish I'd seen Paul Jacksons videos a long time ago. ( George Duke endorsement? I'm in.) Mr. Jacksons lesson is the key to me getting to the next level. Thank you🥇
Mr. Jackson very nicely done. I've always preferred to play rhythm. Through the many years I've gotten a lot of compliments on my playing, especially when the lead player feels free to play only lead. When I was young I thought that people were mistaking me for the lead player. But now I know people really do appreciate a solid foundation with the bass drums and guitar. I love your guitar in this video. I have a 78 wine Standard Les Paul. And my wife just bought me a brand new American Telecaster Special! Can't put it down man! Lotsa love from one old guy to another.
same here!! Once in a while, for YEARS, I google "Science of Rhythm Guitar". Today I did it again and here I am. Excited to finally be able to watch this.
Thanks for posting The Science of Rhythm Guitar series. I was told to get and watch this video years ago when I was studying music. The private instructor I had, who was a studio player himself, recommended this video highly. For reasons too dumb to go into, I was unable to get my hands on it. I was reminded years later, and by then, guitar DVDs were fading and being replaced by RUclips, TrueFire and such. So I figured I'd blown it and my chance to ever see this was passed. This came up as a suggested video by the RUclips algorithms, and I immediately jumped on it. I've subscribed and saved these. Looking forward to working my way through these. Thank you very much PJJr!
Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Witnessed Paul's greatness firsthand at Jazz Alley in Seattle last week. Amazing show with Jazz Funk Soul! Sweetest rhythm playing and solo lines! What a groove!!
Never heard of the hand-buster exercise, should be very helpful for my left pinky which is the weakest of my fretting fingers. Also, for those looking for the right pick, I've discovered that mandolin picks (and to some extent the round edge of a teardrop pick) give me a much rounder sound on the acoustic guitar (I have a very bright & shiny attack) and allow me to tremolo-pick more easily on both electric and acoustic strings. Lord bless you real good too, Mr. Jackson.
GHS Mohicans in THE HOUSE! Sat near you in Mr. Edwards’ music theory class. I never had a clue how good you were. You were just a humble and polite guy. I wish I could have taken lessons from you back then. A few years after graduation, I saw your name on the credits for just about every major record. Went to see your band at Hop Sing’s in Marina Del Rey and backstage, Rit and other jazz greats were hanging out. So happy for you my brother.
I LOVE learning to play and playing rhythm. I'm surprised that you like heavy picks. I have some. Yet as a beginner for the moment I'm comfortable with medium to light
Thank you for sharing this, Paul. As an instructor myself I’m always looking for different ways of looking at the guitar, hearing the guitar, playing the guitar etc.
Ha!😂 I been looking for the rest of this for decades! I tried to order this from your website years ago. Thanks for the for the post. I been a big admirer of all of your work on classic albums. I could tell within seconds…🤔 That’s Paul Jackson Jr. I had a chance to meet you through Chris Payton at NAMM about 5 years ago I believe. Couldn’t make I was with a group bass players and drummers. 😂GOD SPEED.
vhs guitar lessons is where it's at mane, gotta learn from these more often. one of the things contemporary teachers seem to lack is that working artist's 'ready to record' attitude. great
The trick to playing guitar well is to buy your guitars tuned and buy a lot of them. Remember the strings go on the outside. Start with a yellow one then work your way up to blue and red and maybe a sunburst.
I've always been a big fan of rhythm guitar, comp chords, etc. The proper chords with the proper song will always bring out a solo and make the solo sound better.
I am so glad to find this Paul, definitely subscribed. Your catalog of recorded rhythm work is legendary sir. Thank you so much for sharing this time capsule. It's never old information, it's ALWAY key to know how to hold down a rhythm part. Peace
Thank you Mr Jackson. Very practical & useful information. Tried it and realized results quickly. Love your playing. Compared to me (yep I was wearing members only jackets, balloon pants and hi top fades ... had more hair then) ... your style seems more sophisticated kinda like your playing ... funky and always in good taste
I would love to see you play ‘Personal Touch’ live! It’s just an amazingly influencing tune for me. Use to listen to it during my time in Doha Qatar looking at the sea and the desert 🐪
wow, dude came in on a motorcycle pointing at the camera. Probably the sickest intro to a technique video i've ever seen O.o
🤷♂️ he's the man

Will do. Thanks for the great feedback. Lord bless you.
Please I would buy in a heart beat !
Mr. Jackson is in the top 5 studio players ever. Absolutely impeccable.
I have loved and followed Paul Jackson Jr. As a guitarist for decades. He is capable of playing basically any genre and making it sound so simple.
Simple technique being taught here can't be overlooked. Paul is simply THE BEST at all he does. Totally awesome.
this lesson is gold! I loved the skit in the beginning. Would actually watch a full episode as a snapshot of that era! cheers, Paul !
Thank you for this Paul, i'm a young guitar player who's hungry of you're knowledge
Probably why Paul Jackson is a GREAT as he is cause he UNDERSTANDS how to be a rhythm guitarist and he nails it perfectly. He has a sound that is AMAZING

Sometimes, just sometimes YT algorithm gets it right. Absolute gold! Wish there were Tabs or something to look at, for the rest of us beginners
Thanks for sharing this Paul!!! Cheers from Brazil
Used to have this on DVD, now in storage. Thx for posting!! 🙏
Fantastic beggining with the two cues of soloists and rythm guitarrists. I adore Paul's technic. A real SOLID support for the rest of the band. Not just random notes disconected.
I have a hard rock background and studied some jazz, and I'm really looking forward to this course. Thanks Paul, for uploading!

My favorite guitar 🎸 player

Thank you for nice videos, words can't express my gratitude actually!
Always love hearing you explain things. What a great musician / mentor!!
His guitar solo on Don Moen's God is the strength of my heart introduced me to him when I was about 8 years old. The solo was very tasteful.
Thank you and may God bless you Paul 😀
Awesome! As a bass musician, technique is critical for all string instruments .
any instrument
Thank you Mr. Jackson for sharing this useful and important tutorial with all guitarists, I really appreciate it. Regards from New York City.
Holy... G. Duke on intro, how good to learn groovy techniques😂
Dear Paul I’d love to learn from you basics of rhythm guitar if you ever happen to be in CA truly a blessing
If it weren't for some obvious visual qualities, I'd say that this is a 2021 course. The way the lessons are approached feels so fresh.
I'm so glad I found your page. This material is all that I'll be watching for the next few months. Thanks for your teaching and sharing.

Your guitar playing is very beautiful, your playing style is very engaging, it seems very easy, but not everyone else might be able to do it.

Great--some of it reminded me of Lennon's work on rhythm guitar. Thanks!
