I love the pink guara but like you said it does not come back reliably. I planted a white one that I purchased at a local plant sale last year and thought for sure that it wouldn’t return but it has and better than ever. I mulched it over really well for the winter and I’m hoping that helped. I also bought some Bowman’s root at your suggestion as a guara substitute and it is beautiful this year ❤

I think my sandy soil is just too crappy. Second round of plants are not looking good. I've practically replaced the soil with peat moss and compost and added Espoma fertilizer (I've since heard of adding it as a drench). I'm thinking of replacing the worst one of the three with Invincibell 'garnet.' It's in slightly more sun than the others. Gardening isn't for sissies.
Here in CT, our macrophylla hydrangeas have no blooms either. 😢 I’m lucky if I get a couple blooms on the reblooming varieties. My mountain and oak leaf hydrangeas are blooming nicely, though.

It's impressive how healthy those plants are! I'm in 6b but I have areas where all sorts of more tender plants make it through the winter, so I am going to try the nassella! An alternative for colder zones that isn't quite as fine textured is sporobolus heterolepis. It's always interesting experimenting with tender plants -- sometimes they survive or re-seed themselves. I planted something on top of an area where I had salvia "Black & Blue" last year, but then the salvia came back to life along with what I think are some of its progeny. Thanks for the tip about Mt. Cuba trial -- I love phlox as they have one of the most heavenly scents in the garden, but the mildew can be devastating. I have tried a number of cultivars that are supposed to be mildew resistant but aren't. I have had good luck following the Mt. Cuba results for other plants, so am encouraged about phlox. I am looking forward to seeing how you put these plants together -- and also trying to fight the urge to go buy more plants!
I'm in zone 6A, I have the Black & Blue salvia it comes back every year even though it's not supposed to. I cut it to the ground in the late fall and cover with a 5 gallon bucket, it keeps it dry and provides a little bit of insulation.
I too am in zone 6. Glad you mentioned about the older hydrangea types buds being frozen off this season, so we're getting far less (or no) blooms this year. When do you suggest cutting off those sticks that were left as the result of that freeze?

Yes! Cardonna Salvia is my favorite! I plant a lot of them. I have paired them with oriental poppy and coronation gold yarrow and they look great with them both!
Gorgeous plants and colors. Makes me want to start a new area (If I had room) I always liked pinks and purples, but keep adding yellows and oranges. Hard to stay with a lovely color theme. Yes, bloopers are funny!
I chose to go with Porteranthus Pink Profusion instead of Gaura SP - it has some of the same feel but is just more reliable here in Zone 6 New England and is in addition somewhat shade tolerant
I didn’t think stipa was hardy for me in zone 6, but I found it at Lowe’s on clearance with a tag that claims zone 5 🤷♀️ I guess for a few bucks if it doesn’t live that’s ok. I’ll try to site it somewhere special to give it a good chance.
Also about Plox paniculata. P. Flame Purple, Purple Flame, Barfourteen is the bomb for a super saturated deep red-purple. Gorgeous, and the top performer in Mt Cuba trials as "Barfouteen". Bred in the Netherlands. I don't know if all of the Flame series has the same genetics. We grow azalea Red Formosa in zone 8 southeast, and Barfouteen is the same color.
You surely picked out a perfect collection. I have some of them, but because my garden leans more to shade now I have to make difficult choices. Love your videos thanks for sharing. 👍❤️😊

I really like the upright look of that yarrow. I have a white one but it gets super tall and flops. I may have to see if I can find that firefly one.

the secret is not too wet. grows in new mexico zone 6 like crazy. seeds everywhere
