    When we were considering purchasing an RV (We no longer are thanks in large part to to channels like this one) our local RV Dealer said they don’t allow pre-inspections due to “liability and insurance restrictions”, and that their PDI was an extensive process designed to catch any issues, so a pre-inspection was not required nor allowed. HUGE RED FLAG for us and one of many “final straws” in our decision to walk away from the RV world. Sad to hear this inspector say she frequently finds anywhere from 5-30+ issues on each inspection. This industry is in deep trouble. Keep posting Liz, your work is appreciated and sadly, much needed in the moment.

    I feel that an RV inspection is definitely worth the money. However, it's probably important to interview several inspectors before hiring one. It would be nice to have a list of important questions to ask the inspector during an interview. That would be a helpful RUclips video.

    A pre-purchase inspection, absolutely! But here's the question -- are certain designs so inherently bad that... there's no way for the inspection to catch flaws that reveal themselves within only a few miles on the road? Jammed slideouts, roof leaks, electronics glitches. Cabinets and wall pieces that come unfastened. Frame failure. All easily corrected at the design stage by using higher quality components and careful assembly. Liz, get your consumer paper up and running! We need to know who's good out there, amidst all the bad.

    I think of an RV inspection or a mechanic inspection of a used car the same as I do some of these services such as CarFax. It doesn't guarantee you get a good one, but it may steer you away from a bad one. Given the amount of issues documented on Liz's channel, there is no way I would purchase an RV, new or used, without an inspection.

    Your channel is a blast to watch Liz. We too purchased a Thor Class-C product without a pre-inspection. I am very detail oriented and do not like things being out of my control. Not to mention I got dragged into RV life kicking and screaming (had my fill of 'camping' while in the service'). Part of my indoctrination to RV life was getting a handle on and my arms around every single system and component of the rig. After 'touching' everything I ended up with a list of about 40 concerns. Some serious, some not. We sold out when we relocated to be near our grandchildren and the couple who ended up buying the RV got it with most of those items addressed by us. The only real outstanding thing left was the reliability of the Schwintek whole wall slide out system which is bound to be it's Achilles heel (that one single item, once I realized how poorly engineered it was, started our quest to dump it asap).
    Most RVs to me, are cobbled together. Once we've signed on the bottom line, we're stuck.
    An inspection to me, would be best done by actually taking the rig on a full-blown shakedown cruise. That is probably impossible and would be way too expensive. So, vet your inspection service. I'd hire Deb's RV Services in a heartbeat after listening to her.
    And, now we are rig-less, I miss it. It was nice to just get away. So, going forward, no more drivable RVs and used is NOT out of the question. Good luck everyone.
    Edit: I noted Deb's comment regarding the suspension shackle bolt nut being loose. Wow, good find. The Thor/Jayco RV I mentioned above had a similar issue with its "J-Ride" helper springs in that it's shackle/attachment at the Ford leaf spring was within an 1/8" of an inch of slipping off the leaf it was intended to be on. Found that myself.

      Why are you trying to blame the inspector for a poorly designed, and manufactured rig?
      Do you have x-ray vision?
      There's only so much anyone can do when dealing with a newly constructed product that is designed to fall apart on the it's maiden voyage.
      The solution is not to blame the inspectors, the solution is to demand that your state make RV manufacturers liable under automobile lemon laws.
      Or have the Federal government impose building standards on them like what is done with tractor trailer rigs.

    • @garyp3008
      @garyp3008 17 часов назад

      25-30 items could be anything from a major component not working because a wire came loose during transport (or maybe never was hooked up) to somebody who simply bumped into a cabinet face with a tool hanging out of their pocket and left a mark or countless other items. So a count of 25-30 actually seems quite low to me. It seems like a critical eye could easily spot a high number of "concerns" without even entering most RVs. I'm guessing individuals with a critical eye and a desire for near perfection probably just drive themselves nuts when it comes to RV ownership. Relax - Repair - Repeat!

      You can find just as many defects in a brand new home, so don't be surprised at the defects of an RV. The difference is during a new home build you can have inspectors inspect the new home during construction before all electrical and plumbing is closed up behind walls. Same for the A/C ducting, roofing, and everything else during construction, especially custom home builds. You cant do that with a RV though. The inspections are after the build. But if you have a good RV Dealership, they will make things right before the purchase once the inspection is done.

  • @joanndavis4843
    @joanndavis4843 10 часов назад +1

    Thanks, Liz, for letting this inspector talk about all that goes into getting a very thorough RV inspection. I'm curious, though, if a client has to sign a contract with the dealership first in order to hire an inspector? This inspector said once a dealership has a signed contract, it really doesn't care what happens after that. She also said basically that quality control inspections prior to moving an RV onto the sales lot are not happening. Why is the RV industry exempt from this important step and is not required to pass or fail a safe RV? And for a usual RV inspection to last 4-6 hours, these inspectors are getting paid well for a days work. It seems all the training to become a certified RV inspector is well worth the time and effort. Hopefully, more people will become inspired and interested in this as a career. As a suggestion, I think it would be a good move to have more RV inspectors on your channel to answer viewers' questions.

    • @debsrvservices
      @debsrvservices 5 часов назад +1

      Some people have a refundable down payment or sign stating the purchase is dependent on a 3rd party inspection. The 4-6 hours is not all the inspector does. Behind the scenes we are researching the RV, travel to the location, spend the amount of time it takes to perform the inspection and then we come home and have to complete the report. The report itself can take several hours. As an inspector gains more time performing inspections they get more efficient. I can perform a 6-7 hour inspection is 5 hours. I’ve had a lot of time on the job. Price is still the same. My experience and education is also tied into that cost. It also depends on the year make and model of the RV. Tag axle diesel pushers are an exhausting all day job. Sometimes a full 8 hours. Thanks for the question!

      Also, many school busses get a minimum of two lengthy inspections. Once(or more) on the assembly line, and once when delivered. (I have a friend who does that)
      Also the housing and commercial property industry. Inspections are a must.
      Also buying plain land. A survey and title search is a must have.
      These are just the ones I can think of offhand. Probably many more.

      Yep people expect a 4 bedroom mansion on wheels and the only way to make these big rigs portable and drivable, without needing a Kenworth prime mover, they have to make them out of paper mache and plywood on a thin sheetmetal frame. Put together with staples. Then people want slide outs so they cut big holes in an already weak structure and now the whole thing is twisting and vibrating down the road, loosening staples, breaking silicone seals and causing slide outs to jam.

  • @jeff5467
    @jeff5467 16 часов назад +2

    Unfortunately RV inspector certification is a commercial product, and under no oversight by state or federal government. One of the biggest inspector training companies has this disclaimer front and center in their listing of items an inspector gets training on :
    “Although we try our hardest to ensure that our members are trained to be the best RV Inspectors in the industry, The National Recreational Vehicle Inspectors Association, Inc. does not make any representation or warranty as to the quality of RV Inspections done by its RV inspector members.”
    Good luck to all those buying RVs, you’re going to need it.

    Sounds like the inspection needs to set aside more time to do a thorough inspection. Otherwise, the inspector needs to make sure that the customer understands there are areas of the inspection not covered if the time allowed is insufficient. My big question for the inspection is "Does a comprehensive inspection list that is approved by a majority of the inspectors in the country exist, and. if so, where is it and why is it not mandatory for all inspectors?" This list should be made available to all of the public so we can follow along with the inspector they hire. The inspection report should include what is inspected, what areas are tested, and how the inspection will be conducted on each item. Lastly, check with your inspector and ask what items WILL NOT be looked at. Interview several inspectors to see which ones are more thorough and a better value.

    As a retired heating engineer qualified to work on motorhomes etc, here in the UK. You test first doing a tightness test. If that confirms you have a leak, then you use the gas sniffer (preferably inside a ventilated building with signage around stating no naked flames and don't operate electrical switches etc) because unless it is an open pipe, small amounts of gas will blow away. Followed up by using leak detector fluid.

    For inspectors: what about this. I contract with you to inspect a "gently-used" towable at $1200 to check everything. You walk up on it and immediately see signs it's been in an undisclosed wreck; deal killer. It's been only five minutes, but it's pointless to look any further. Of course you can say that was worth it to me; I get it.
    But I'm going to buy Something; I need you to look at my second and third choices. Can you apply a large percentage of the cost of the first (five-minute) inspection to the next one? And that could be one you walk in, smell mold, and walk out. I mean, I could be out $3600 before we find one even worth repairing.
    Or do you offer a "quick look" deal where you tell me straight off whether we have something worth a full inspection? Otherwise I'm going to give up before I start.

    When I worked at a car dealer ''' New '' cars I seen cars go out that would not pass a safety check, I complained to 3 people in charge and was told to let it go and we will fix it under warranty later,
    1 went out with only 1 bolt holding the master cylinder for the break system,
    They let a big truck that was bought for a 5th wheel camper go without greasing the U joints or ball joints and they knew this family was going on a 1000 mile road trip and paid extra to make sure it was well looked over, They parked that truck for 2 days then called and told him it was all set, They let another go with broken wires for the security system knowing when it rained the car would lock and have to be towed back,

I'm sure they can find a lot of things and having testing equipment would help but there's so much that goes wrong in use, I'd say it's maybe worth it depending on cost but they aren't going to find everything and what they don't find could be serious issues.

    ❤ Regarding roof inspections. I have first hand knowledge and experience on those sealers the manufacturers use. Looking at the roof I thought the seal surface looks solid and leak proof, but they are actually porous. I had several transit busses that had that issue with rain pouring onto the driver no mechanic could find it. After researching the history of complaint I decided to remove and scrape it all off and found the trails of corrosion thru the sealer into the ceiling around the vent/escape hatches in the front and in the back. Why this type of sealer is still being used i can't say. But I cleaned it all off to the metal and used a clear bathtub sealer (silicone). I let the silicone dry,, the spray painted my work around the hatch with rustolium satin white spray paint. It took me a long time to make the repairs but it was happening over 4yrs. It was worth it to finally get it fixed right. This was on 4 transit busses that supposedly were refurbished. 4 busses and 4 years later. I hope my post here helps you, your patrons, and the manufacturers. That sealer is really poor. Why it works on some and not on others has me baffled. But that sealer is the problem

      Well Peter, as a master certified RV repairman of 27 years, I'll share this with you...Stick with Dicor products made for your roof material and you can't go wrong. Silicone sealant is for tub surrounds, and has absolutely no use on RV roofs, except maybe on an emergency basis until the proper sealant is available.

    Even the best inspector can't find every problem. Something will happen as the RV is towed down the road, and it will shake its shelf to pieces. Part of the problem is that people must educate themselves before making an inexpensive purchase. Campers are hand-built by some people with very little training or experience. Speed is a priority, and mistakes will be made. You can take a factory tour to see how a particular brand is built. If the workers are running and the place is a mess, it is likely that many mistakes will be made in what they are building.

    The biggest concern about inspection is that they dont check the most important safety things like frame flex, suspension, brakes etc .....
    Most of the FifthWheel have drum brakes, do they go on the road with the units ..... NO, do they go on the road to test the suspension NO (mostly a visual "control"), do they measure the flexibility of the frame NO.
    Unfortunately rv inspectors are the exact copy of the "industry" they only look to what is shining ..... in the best case.
    Inspection is a good idea, but the way it's done .....

    I just don't understand why this inspection is not done at the factory?
    A final Quality Inspection must be done by the manufacturer.
    Just saying...

    25-30 items she finds wrong!!?? As low as 5??!!
    That is 1 too many for a brand new rig hot off the press!!
    Something needs to change at the factory. What happened to BUILT IN THE UNITED STATES and being proud of that craftsmanship? I would be embarrassed to tell my friends/family that I work at a place that made travel trailers, 5th wheels, Class A B & Cs.
    I'm just blown away!
    I have been thinking about doing the courses at the NRVTA. 🤙

    Was the people who had all of the water issues using a certified inspector on their new RV? That is an important consideration. If so, he could be liable for such a serious issue for the Air Conditioning system. He obviously missed that.

    I've got news for everyone... home inspectors miss things as well. So do plumbers, mechanics, dentists, doctors, painters... Also consider that as crappily built as most RVs are these days it may take some driving to make the unit to flex around and pulling/shaking itself apart. The problem here isn't necessarily the inspector but rather the manufacturer, especially when it comes to performing warranty work! Imagine buying a new car and it having an issue but they refuse to repair it correctly, sometimes to the point they try get off by saying, "Too bad, but your warranty is over."
    And there are even people that have admitted that they heard RVs are poorly built but they thought if they threw even more money at one they would be safe. It's ridiculous to think that. The more toys, the more issues you're going to have. People buy a lot of junk from offshore manufacturers and think, "Huh, oh well. I should have known better, but I really wasn't expecting much to begin with." So now they think domestic builders aren't going to take the same attitude? The people that own and run these companies didn't work and sweat to build a business, they twisted and finagled money around, sold off the good stuff and began building garbage. Name one product built today that is better built than it was twenty years ago.

      @@LizAmazing I'm sad that I'm always bearing the cold slap of reality, I'm really not this guy IRL. I was a pro' tech for fifty years and there's nothing new about any of this. It all began going downhill twenty five or so years ago and it's tough to find anything worth buying since 2005 or so. So many manufacturers were bought up by those that didn't care about product quality, they just wanted to shove a pretty face out the door and rake in the cash.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  19 часов назад +1

      Hi Theresa, I'm thinking $800 to $1400 for a full inspection depending on if we are talking a small travel trailer or a large motorhome with lots of amenities. Debbie will likely comment with more accurate info! Thanks for watching!

    • @debsrvservices
      @debsrvservices 16 часов назад +1

      Hi Theresa, it does depend on the type and year. A travel trailer is around $800 but and Class A can be $1300-1500 on avg but some prices are different with each inspector and with the age of the RV. Also, some inspectors like me offer a walkthrough inspection which is time based where we walk through it together. That is a lower price point. Hope this helps.

    Liz, if the inspector was suggest by the dealer then they will not do a proper job for the customer. They won't upset the dealer because that is their "employer" they are really the one feeding the inspector.

    Well, for one thing there is cheap labor building these trailers, also lots of pressure to get the trailer built and going to the next one. "NO QUALITY CONTROL" at the factory.

Not retirement living on-the-road. Get an older reliable comfortable Pickup Truck, Get comfortable Hotel rooms, Live Happy! It is sad when one has to hire an inspector to inspect " BRAND NEW" RVs. Nobody does this in the auto industry. I think it speaks to more regulations and consumer protection.
