    Sure the Falcon and Commodore could get up and boogie if they needed to, but wafting down country lanes and coastal roads with comfort and reliability was what made our local machines so great

    The falcon and the commodore is the manifestation of the Australian spirit. You know that Simpsons episode when the farmer brings Bart's mischief to the Prime Ministers attention? That nonchalant attitude the fella had towards the most powerful man in the country? We like to romanticize Australia as a society in which a certain brotherhod/kinship permeates through barriers of class, age, etc.
    I like to think that the falcon is the embodiment of that. The poor student drives the old hand me downs, the astute family man drives one, the coppers drive one, the hooners drive one, your grandma drives one, the Indian taxi driver owns one and even the Prime MINISTA drives one.
    Perhaps the idea of egalitarianism which is romancitized in movies like the Castle or in Australia day speeches does exist. We just need to turn to the now dead line of falcon and commodore vehicles.

      tturi2 The XR GT you're talking about didn't have driving lights, and XR was the model name and not the trim level. The first XR series Falcons came out with the EB model, in 1993. The XR name was chosen to tie in with the euro models, with the number denoting the number of cylinders; XR5, XR6, XR8 etc.

    The other cops (March Hare, Big Bopper?) drove '72 Falcon XAs. All had skinny tires for extra squeals...

    I own a ford falcon BF Station wagon. Keeping her looked after in servicing is keeping running good and quiet. She leaves the other cars for dead at traffic lights. Seating is comfortable. It has no antenna which is a plus for car washes that is automated makes it easier to clean. Apart from that she is a great car. Also she has a solid frame and bodywork. The only change I have noticed is the headlight switch is on the steering wheel where as the falcons in the past had a turn switch. This one is fourth of the falcons in the past. First one was the EA, the second was EF, the third was the AU MK 1. Apart from all four of them the best ones I loved was the EF and BF.

    Just on an early point, not all the way through yet, our performance falcons of the 70s, 80s and 90s were V8s (351 all the way through, I believe), the xr6 came around in the 90s, but the xr8 was still the proper performance variant. The xr6 turbo wasn't taken seriously when it came out in the bf series, but soon outpaced the xr8. Still, the v8 variant has always been the 'true' performance variant.

      The xr6 turbo was the fastest aussie produced car when it came out but the car that held that title prior was the straight 6 e49 valiant charger, and that had been around since the early 70s.. So 6 cylinders were definitely a big part of the au/nz muscle car era.

    • @mattmcilwhan
      @mattmcilwhan 6 лет назад +3

      Not saying 6 cylinders weren't a big part, the e49 charger is my favourite of the big 3 aussie muscle cars (xy gtho and monaro being the others), don't forget the xu1, which was a smaller inline 6. Just saying the v8 falcons at least of the 70s were the equivalent of the mustang, our muscle car, not the 6 cylinder versions.

      @joytech23 6 лет назад +25

      It's pretty good considering the car's 1700kg or 3750lb weight.
      I have an FG series (08-11 years) and on the highway I can average 8.5L/100km or 33MPG.
      Around town, you'll probably average closer to 12L/100km or 24MPG.
      It might have to do with the class-leading torque of the N/A engine, you're rarely over 2000RPM in driving.

    The Barra engine is good. I think partly because there was an engine development team at Ford Australia whose only job was to continually develop the Falcon straight 6. Straight 6's are a solid design anyway, and they make a great performance package when turboed. And the continual development and use in fleet service meant that all the flaws were gone and super strong by the end.

  • @brendanmatthys3788
    @brendanmatthys3788 6 лет назад +5

    As an AU falcon owner (yeah AU does stand for Australia lol) I have to say this really hits the nail on the head. There aren't too many differences between the AU and the BF, other than the Barra engine, the 6 speed auto vs the 4 speed and obviously the much better looking front end. I used to own an old Corolla and it was fun, it was small, it didn't weigh much and it was a 5 speed manual but it was loud on the road, it felt really cheap, it looked really cheap, there was no electric assisted anything and the aircon didn't work. My Falcon has its fair share of issues: the interior light stays on for too long after the doors are locked or the car starts, the control station sits about 1.5mm too low and its headlights are fogging up but other than that it's been a totally solid car. I was really surprised at how good a balance between straight line power and taking corners Ford had figured out with the Falcon. It took corners as a 1.4 tonne car better than my old Corolla which weight like 900KG ish? Plus it's waaay faster in a straight line. I'm really happy with my purchase and I'm glad you liked the modern day Falcon Mr Regular :)

I just loved the way they sounded and their smoothness, even if they felt a lot less powerful. I drove on AUII with 700,000km and it purred like a kitten and the body was tight as a drum!

      IndiekidDrugPatrol Servicing a Ford Falcon in UK very is hard as 99.99% of British mechanics have never worked on a Falcon. Nearly all parts have to imported from AU. Effecting a major service or repair is onerous and agonising due to lengthy sea freight transit times and high shipping costs. A BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 or Mercedes E Class beats an imported Falcon in the UK any day in respect to serviceability and reliability.

    • @user-kc1tf7zm3b
      @user-kc1tf7zm3b 4 года назад

      Russell Robinson The Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore were developed in large part due previous to protectionist trade policies from the 20th century. When imported car tariffs were lowered, which help made these imported cars becoming more favoured and desirable, it lead to the inevitable demise of these large sedans. Since the early 2000s, SUVs and compact cars have been the car type of choice for most car buyers, again, displacing full size sedans. At the end of the day, the Australian Ford and Holden (GM) operations are merely fully owned subsidiaries of the American parent company. Nothing more. Most Australians have never visited Detroit, Michigan, the home city of Ford and GM, so most Australians miss the point completely.
