Oh-too-ken is the correct pronunciation, their music is primal and tribal mixed with modern. For me it feels like the music I have been looking for all my life. Also if I was 40yrs younger I would be packing up and heading to Siberia, those ladies are amazing, must be something in the water or the honey.

Daniel, thanks for doing this song. I had never heard of either of this group until I watched your reaction. I've been obsessed with Otyken for the past 24 hours or so since. They have quite a few really good music videos. Checkout out their Wikipedia page and your appreciation of them will at least double. Ummet has some cool stuff but Otyken is the real gem here in my opinion.

Yeaaah! I like Ummet Ozcan's music. After learning of throat singing, he eventually showed up in my recommendations. He's a live DJ, and incorporates his throat singing, and traditional instruments into it. Definitely worth a deep dive if you like trance, and similar styles. I'll admit I didn't look into Otyken much, but they are a Siberian indigenous group out of Krasnoyarsk, Russia that mixes traditional folk with pop elements. So good.
Folk-pop group Otyken were the guest of honor at the 2023 Grammy Awards. The group had planned to perform in the US in 2023, including on America's Got Talent by invitation from the organizers, but they had to postpone their live performance to 2025.
At the end of 2023, at the invitation of the Russian delegation, Otyken performed in Dubai at the UN Climate Change Conference and became the only artists from around the world to take part in this event.
The ethnic music group “Otyken” consists of various representatives of the small peoples of Siberia: Chulyms, Kets, Selkups, Khakass and Dolgans. Their main style is a combination of different musical genres with the sound of ethnic instruments and throat singing. This kind of music is called World Music. The tracks are released in Chulym, Khakass, Dolgan and Russian. The group members play both authentic and rare instruments - jew's harp, ikili, khomys - as well as drums, bass guitar, keyboards and saxophone. Throat singing is often combined with recitative. The group films most of their videos outdoors: in the forest, on a frozen river, on mountain tops.

At first I was resistant to the new directions that Otyken were taking but mostly because their older music is so awesome.😂
This is a great collab but I must admit I prefer the lower timbre of the heavy-set guy with the cool fuzzy hat who usually does the vocal throat singing parts.

Hi Daniel, I got hooked on this band during the December holidays! My eye caught Altay which is the Altai Mountains where possibly my mother's ancestors came from. Ummet Ozcan, I believe, is of Turkish origins. His throat singing is awesome. I think you can say he is of the electronic dance/trance music genre. Combined with Otyken's Siberian ethnic sounds, our ears are privileged to hear this new sound. Otyken's "Phenomenon" was my first listen to this music. Thanks for reacting to this. Otyken & Ummet Ozcan are both worth diving into more. Much like The Hu, I don't understand the language, but the music and lyrics are still fire. Also, most of their videos have English subtitles.

Ümmet Özcan is a Turk DJ born in Netherlands. Otyken is indigenous Siberian Turk group formed to preserve Chulym folklore, from Russia. The music is about Turkic folklore and Tengri belief. The belief was followed by all Central Asian/Siberian origin nations like Turks, Mongols, Magyars (Hungarian), Yeniseian etc. Altay is where Turks emerged and seen as sacred lands in Turkic folklore. Currently between lands of Russia and Mongolia. Ötüken(Otyken) is also sacred land as it was the capital of GökTürk Khaganate, currently inside Mongolia. As Turks mostly migrated westard over time, Mongols settled into ancient Turk lands (And other parts of ancient Turk lands are inside Russia and China). Turks and Mongols are cousin nations with shared history and the throat singing in the music is both Türk and Mongol culture.
