Sweed here; We were united once , and in some ways we never really split apart really. We're still very close, like to me going to Norway or Denmark isn't leaving the country for me, still feels like I'm on home turf.
Also the capital could be Gothenburg it's like the perfect middle point, plus traveling to Sweden on the ocean, Gothenburg would be the place you arrive to at first. To get to Stockholm you'd have to either go around the southern point or go through the river both takes a lot of time.
If we wanna be technical only Norway and Sweden are the Scandinavian countries, because the scandinavian mountain chain stretches along the border between Norway and Sweden. Denmark is connected with a bridge, Finland up top but its not scandinavian.
However I'd still plop in Finland cause we're all connected; Norway Sweden and Finland are fused together and Denmark clamped on with a bridge so we're all united really :) would feel odd leaving Finland out when its attached to us
Also best protected from russia!
Why is the Kalmar Union not mentioned or did I miss it? This would also make sense for the flag. (yellow field, red cross)
Bingo!
I dont think it would be very comparable, as it was so long ago and the countries are so different now.
Can you explain more about this alliance?
Good thing you pointed of the difference between Scandanavia and the Noridc countries two seconds in.
@@qandrshow-m7k Also, Estonia is a Nordic country in essence, but the Soviet occupation damaged its reputation and now other Nordic people live with Cold War stereotypes and don't consider Estonia a Nordic country anymore.
WORD! Biggest hot button issue in the region it would seem! ;-)
@@eksiarvamus Estonia 🇪🇪 is a Baltic country with Latvia 🇱🇻 and Lithuania 🇱🇹.
@eksiarvamus Estonia was never a nordic country. Baltic yes but not nordic
@@Kjellen1981 typical dumb stereotype. It has always been as Nordic as Finland and "Baltic" is a geopolitical grouping, not one of culture and identity like Nordic. Estonians clearly are not ethno-linguistically Baltic.
Stop speaking out of your ass, OK?
Gothenburg would be a good capital city candidate as it is directly in between Oslo and Copenhagen, is a historical port city, and not the capital of Sweden.
A neutral city that is approximately halfway between all three major capitals.. Good choice! That's why Ottawa and Washington, DC are a thing, ditto for Brasilia and Canberra!
My suggestion would be right on the maritime tripoint in Skagerrak! An offshore capital with no border disputes. Using oil rig technology and viking shipbuilding skills😂
There's a city in Minnesota called Scandi because of the Scandinavian founders.
Re-united .. They´ve been united before. Kalmar union 1397-1523
That did include most of Finland to thou, since most of it was Swedish during that union.
Swede here! Two points:
1. Stockholm would not be a contender for capital. Gothenburg would be our contribution.
2. Our languages are mostly mutually intelligible, but not perfectly, and arguably not enough. We'd have to merge them a bit, but the logical choice would be norwegian, not swedish. Norwegian seems to be most in the middle, it's the easiest language for both swedes and danes to understand. Especially if we consider a sort of nordic union in whole.
You can't simply use the metric "most populous" or "largest land area" or something like that. Otherwise, I'm all for a union! I meet a lot of danish and norwegian customers, and most insist on atleast trying to speak their own language as far as possible. It warms my heart. But some are just not intelligible. Norwegians often adapt to swedish, they sort of dumb it down for us. Danes from anywhere but Copenhagen are actually quite hard, and I'd say I'm more linguistically capable than the average swede.
As a Norwegian living in Iceland, I think a union of all Nordic countries would make much more sense. The Nordic Passport Union has secured open borders and free movement between the countries for citizens of any of the Nordic countries from the 1950s. However, crime has lately resulted in more border checks.
So if Sweden, Norway, and Denmark would unite and form Scandanavia, it would be the greatest country on Earth. I already knew how much better those countries are than the US, but seeing them becoming one country would make it better than every single country on Earth. This could potentially become a reality.
Been there, done that, didnt work.
We are Friends but not lovers😊
nah as norwegians we aint taking that risk again haha
As danish - why? It immediately sounds like a good idea - looks enviously at all the nice Norwegian oil money ;-). What if you got Tordenskjold, Iver Huitfeldt, Ludvig Holberg and many other great Norwegians in Danish history back?
@@jorgenlarsen775 Considering we were in a union with both Denmark and Sweden separately until 1905 and didn't exactly leave those unscathed.. yeah we're good 😂
As a Swede, I agree.
The last attempt (the Kalmar Union) was a de-facto Danish controlled Frankenstein's monster that we had to fight multiple times to get out of. And with modern Sweden... well lets keep you guys safe from our dumbass migration policy and gang-crime.
Especially Denmark. I hate how history has turned to make Denmark more sensible than Sweden. :/
Great video! Next one you could make a similar video for the Baltics.
@@laurisneimanis5483 would be interesting
As a norwegian i would not really opose this since we are really connected and like minded on alot of things. we clearly have opinions and a different culture but people are never 100% like minded in a country anyways
U.K.S (United Kingdom of Scandinavia)
If applicable, should be in the majority - kingdoms since both Denmark, Sweden and Norway have their own monarchy.
a.k.a kalmarunionen. Didn't work out, danes are pain in the
As a Dane, I must admit you are right. After all, the Danes probably came from Scania. So they are a kind of half-Swedish. The Byzantine historian Jordanes believed that the Dani are the same people as the Swedes. Yes, I know - a disgusting thought ;-)
It was more established because outside threat thou and was not as close not as we are today. No there is more of a brother sister relation between the nations, but before it was a history of a lot of war. If a union happened today, it could work. Not that there is much reason to do so.
We of course want Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Finland in a Nordic union and not just a Scandinavian union. Whether Greenland wants to be part of this union is up to them.
Definitely a Nordic union would make more sense than a Scandinavian union. All of these countries are related, and it would not make sense to leave Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands out of it.
Scandinavia is geographically really only Norway and Sweden - as it is the Scandinavian peninsula. Denmark is considered as part of continental Europe. Also if you add Greenland to "Scandinavia", you should also include the Faroe islands, Svalbard, Peter I island, Bouvet island, Bear island, and Queen Maud land.
@@BastianNorW we wont leave a brother behind 🫡
@@BastianNorW The peninsula is named after the region not the other way. It’s a political geography concept, not a physical one.
And most Denmark is islands. The biggest and most populous being located closer to Scania than any other mainland ✌️from our point of view Sweden is the continent just as much as Germany simply meaning “not on an island anymore”
It’s a very Swedish and Norwegian thing to not see yourselves as “continental” just because you are on a peninsula 😅
Nowadays when we have bridges you don’t feel it very much but largely being an island nation is deeply rooted in Danish society.
Cough, cough, Kalmar Union, cough, cough... And yes, Greenland really should be considered North American/Canadian and really the second eastern half of Nunavut since both sides share common ancestry, geography, language, etc. And the current Greenlandic peoples were originally from Nunavut to boot, eh? ;-)
The US tried to buy Greenland several times the past. The last serious attempt was in 1947 when we offered $100 mil in gold which would be worth $6.2 billion today
Kalmar union PTSD incoming
7:06 (Windmills) are in Havøysund, Norway, the village where I live😊
demolish the windmills
I rode my motorcycle to Havøysund last summer. The road leading up to the village is the clossest thing to motorcycling heaven I've ever seen. Twisty roads with good quality pavement, beautiful ocean scenery, reindeer, oh and I even saw dolfins/whales!
The village is also obviously pretty as can be. You are fortunate to live there!
Greetings from Finland!
I love all the scenery shown in this video and I am quite jealous! It looks beautiful. I love viking music, I love the sound of Faroese language and I would love snow if I lived close to it... but I am Australian and here I am sweating in the heat with my husky 😅. I was really born on the wrong side of the world!
@@Simarski17 I was just in Karigasniemi! Cheers to you Finnish brother🤝
@@snefokk_i_heiene Helt enig!
Viking power 😅
Stronger together, invading and changing the world... Like Nordic Mongols!
Any cognitive excerise about a united north that does not involve Finland is monument of ignorance about what the north is.
Scandinavia is named after the region Scania, capital of Scania is Malmö so there is the logical Capital for you! But not to worry, it would never happen that this merge would happen.
They would definitely put bar codes on their ships ....That way they could scan the navy in.....
I've always thought that Scandinavia should just unite into one country, the three are so similar, have similar history and are basically the same country split into three. So might as well.
What if central america united?
And what if namibia, botswana and south africa united?
If they did, they would be the least corrupt country in Africa, have the best human rights record, be the most welcoming of LGBT in Africa which they already are, rank first in basically every good category, and won't be getting involved in wars, as they already don't.
What If you removed the 5 largest countries in the World
@@eksiarvamus Maybe not all of us, but there are quite a lot of people who consider Estonians (and Lithuanians and Latvians) as brothers/sisters. There is a lot of cooperation between them already, and will likely be more in the future. I have not been to either country, but it is high on my list.
There is already a Scandinavian language already - which is a mix of the 3. I learned some in primary school.
We share similar cultures and work closely together in many areas. But as a Norwegian, I don’t think we’d want to become one country. Our past unions with both Sweden and Denmark weren’t great experiences for us. We like being independent.
Why is it assumed that a nations largest city would be its capita? I can only think of 2 countries in Europe that don't do so, but the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand don't. And here in North America, half of Canada's provinces and two-thirds of US states put their capital somewhere other than the largest city.
Why change and complicate something that is working now.
You are talking about the cultural Scandinavia, not the physical peninsula of Scandinavia
Isn't the peninsula called Fennoscandia?
@@andypaulsibakoff9816
No, the Scandinavian peninsula is subdivision of Fennoscandia, which covers Northern Finland, Norway and Sweden.
This peninsula is though named after the cultural region and not the opposite way.
The concept of Scandinavia as a region of the Scandinavian language speaking countries is much older.
This is a terrible idea, no dane or norseman wold accept to having a swedish capital, or speaking swedish. it would probably lead to political instability, and would give no real benefits.
Gothenburg should be the capital city. The coast from the Oslo fjord down to Copenhagen-Malmö would be the center of the county of Scandinavia with the rather large city of Gothenburg right in the midle. Stockholm would be even more on the back side than it is now.
Norway could just buy sweden (we have enough to buy there whole stock exchange)
What would happen to their monarchies though?
Biggest problem is... would we become a Republic? Or continue being a Kingdom.... who's king or Queen are we killing off here? I am a royalist and love my kingdom of Norway and cant really see me following the danish or swedish king... and for capital it does not need to be the biggest one... see to Australia where they built a new one and its not the biggest city.
United again…. Not by war bit economics😂
at 4:44 it is kinda wrong bc Norways Goverment Pension Fund should be included but google dont include that and thus making Only Norways GDP at 1.72 trillion USD.
Why exclude Finland? Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages are very similar, so talking about the choice of language just proves your ignorance.
No thanks from Norway!
First
So, just so you know, Denmark is NOT part of Scandinavia. Scandinavia is a peninsula, and only Sweden and Norway are on it.
Scandinavia is Norway, Sweden and Denmark -the Scandinavian people talking the Scandinavian languages. The Scandinavian PENINSULA is Norway and Sweden....
just so you know..
there is no confusion here as the peninsula isn't known as Scandinavia, but Fenoscandia. Scandinavia is thus only a cultural descriptor
Kind of done with this union thing 🫠🇳🇴
