- What do you think causes this noise? - SOLVED - see edit below
The Tundra Tick - 2014 5.7 roughly 80k miles, regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. Get this tick on some cold starts. Worse in lower temps. Goes away after a few minutes. FFV engine, but we never run E85 in it.
Edit 2020-08-31
This was caused by a small leak in the timing chain tensioner on the driver side. Your dealer or other service tech can validate the cause on the driver side by observation through the oil filler location if they remove the filler tube and run the engine to see the tensioner action. The reason the sound comes and goes is due to fluctuations in oil pressure - higher pressure pushes the tensioner hard enough to prevent the chain slap. As soon as oil pressure goes down a little bit, the tensioner allows slack in the chain guide and causes slap.
Ours was covered under warranty for both sides: tensioners, chain guides, chains, and whatever else is in there. When they opened it up, they found cam tower leaks starting so they covered that as well as coolant diverter leak in the valley of the engine with a slow weep. We opted to have them replace the water pump and radiator hoses on our dime while they were in there, at the cost of parts and a little water pump labor.
Purrs like a kitten all over again.
On my 2011 Tundra it was sticking tensioner. Ran seafoam Oil, Fuel, Intake and has made zero ticking since. Only did the treatment once and no longer add sea foam and is still solid for the past 6 months. Not saying that is the same for everyone but it would be a fast and cheap test. Oh by the way my noise would go and come while the engine was warming up. Once it warmed up it would usually stop.
That’s awesome info and a great idea for anyone out of warranty. Thanks for sharing!
Hey man I just added Seafoam today to the crankcase and fuel. Still no ticking for you?
hello my truck does the exact same thing can you explain how and what did you use to get it fix please?
Hi, I just purchased a 2016 with 186k miles. 3,000 miles later and I caught all of these issues, timing chain tick, cam towers leaking and coolant diverter leak. I was wondering how it has been after repairing? Is it worth the repair and any advice? Thanks!
My 2015 was doing the same thing. Took it to the dealer and they’re changing the timing tensioner and chain just for the hell of it. Was supposed to be a $5,100 job, that extended warranty came in handy. Should be picking it up tomorrow.
I assume this solved your noise? This was caused by a small leak in the timing chain tensioner on the driver side. Your dealer or other service tech can validate the cause on the driver side by observation through the oil filler location if they remove the filler tube and run the engine to see the tensioner action. Ours was covered under warranty.
Timing tensioner, timing chain, and left variable timing gear replaced. Noise went away then got a check engine light. Took it back and dealer told me both variable timing gears had to be replaced together. Not just one. Whatever. Everything had to be torn apart again. Once again, luckily I was still under warranty. Everything is done now after a few painful weeks. Truck is running like a champ. No more noise at start up.
I just got mine back for the 2nd time from dealer! They have had it since February! Stilllllll knocks. They replaced both Cam Gears a timing Chain. Still makes same sound though . It’s a 15 with only 68k miles
How was this solved my tundra does the exact thing
Definitely should have been recalled for chain tensioner but nobody talks about the bad side of Toyota
Ah, slow down buddy, 90% of people don't change their oil as they are suppose to. Imagine that, not being the brand but the owner...
@@bluesky-ud9wg Cam tower leaks, premature water pump failure, oil cooler leaks. Wheel speed sensors , Terrible stock brakes. I drive a 2021 Tundra and absolutely love it but i call it how it is

@@tundras4ever552 Terrible brakes, lol, ok
@@bluesky-ud9wg Go to any forum bud, they're, not good, they warp super prematurely. If you use your truck like a truck and tow often you would know. Barely get 35-40k miles out the stock rotors before they warp.
Our Sequoia started doing this at 70k. Just out of warranty and we serviced it on schedule with our dealer. Ugh.
Nice icon setup.
Use an OEM filter and 5/30 oil. 0/20 helps with mileage but not longevity.
I know you said this was covered under warranty but do you know the cost at that time ? And is it worth it?
Did you ever figure out this issue? My 2015 does this same noise but it goes away after like 15 minutes when warm. Only happens on a cold startup

I have a 2010 bought brand new, all the maintenance myself, I don't have this issue. I imagine it will come up eventually, being the part that is the problem. I have a feeling all these timing chain rattle video's are from used vehicles that were road hard and thrown out wet, so to speak. Nice suspension.
Yeah, we also bought new and are religious about maintenance, including oil samples going to Blackstone Labs for analysis. Nothing funky or out of sorts with any fluid, just seems to be a handful of bad seals on the tensioners. And thanks about the suspension, it’s been a lot of fun. Haha.
I have a 2014 I bought new, and like yourself I've done ALL maintenance (except the first serpentine belt change as the $149 price from the dealer seemed worth it at the time). I didn't even take the free oil changes that the dealer gave me with my purchase of the truck - just did not want them to do anything. I never treat the truck bad. I now have 170k and NOTHING has gone wrong on this vehicle. I still can't believe this truck is this reliable.
mines doing the same thing and have been having weird power loss issues lately, as well as finding an unusual amount of oil in 2 of my spark plug wells covering the ignition coil.
looks like i should've kept my 22re tacoma
This is a common problem valve cover leak around the spark plug wells
What brand of oil do you use?
Did you ever get it fixed? I have the same problem.

Tyler Tran claims its an exhaust valve tick which he also stated is normal. However, Toyota dealerships across the continent have told actual Tundra owners as myself that it’s the cam chain tensioners and it’s a $4k job. Who knows, maybe Tyler is correct and the dealerships are full of shit. 🤷🏻♂️ Either way it still proves that Toyota hasn’t taken ownership of this problem yet and they damn well should!

Same with mine. Dealership told me I need my timing chain replaced.thousands in repairs.
The tittle of the video was about the 2014 tundra 5.7 tick solved, but I did not see any solution to resolve the ticking noises except you flexing your icon 2 inch lifted kit, you can’t say solved without improvising us the solution
The video was posted when we were trying to figure it out - before the issue was solved. I edited the title so people could find the solution if they read the description. I’ve also replied to every comment asking for more info. If you want to see the Icon suspension ‘flex’ and not my ego, watch it on Instagram.

What is it mine is doing same thing
Timing chain tensioner There's 4 of them
How did you fix that knock/tick and what was it?
I wrote up the fix in the description once we found it. Timing chain tensioner. Ours was done under warranty.
sounds like an exaust leak on the manifold which has been a problem on these engines
Same thing. Started 1 k ago. 2008 with 49 k. 5.7L
Same thing. 2018. 36k miles. Toyota tells me it’s normal and to get used to it.

Only 80k miles and already needing this kind of work... what happened to Toyota..
My 2014 with 180K kms on it started doing that now as well. Always dealer-serviced since new.
About 20K kms ago we had taken it in to have the leaks fixed for the cam towers and timing chain cover. It was a manufacturing defect, but we were on the hook for it. Almost $7K CDN to have the work done.
And now this. Argh.
Otherwise, a good truck.
Its still under warranty at 80K?
We have the Toyota extended to 125k miles. Check with your dealer to see how long yours is good.

I have the same noise on my 16 tundra
had the same noise.... timing chain tensioner issue. Fixed mine by adding AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush... supposedly it gets rid of the oil sludge or some sort of buildup at the tensioner. Search on RUclips “Tunda AMSOIL engine flush”. Dealer quoted ~$6500 to fix the problem.... oil flush, new oil and filter cost me $140CAD (all AMSOIL)...
Thanks! I'll definitely have a look into that, Appreciate the tip!
