why can't I rasterize my layer? it is not a highlighted option. I tried changing to 8 bits but this didn't help. I am using PS cc2015.5 could that be why?

When I come to do my second layer in automatically puts the layer as a smart object so the shape I do becomes black and hides the picture help please.

how come when i try to select the layer via cut, it only allows me to layer via copy? Am i doing something wrong?

It's probably because its still a smart object. You must rasterize it first
