When I was a kid pretty much every kid in the neighborhood made one from a sewing spool and some nails, and for a tool we used a nut pick which had a good shape for manipulating the yarn.
When I was growing up, we called them Knittin' Nobbins! ;o) @Colton Michael. Just doing the French knitter is very soothing and calming even if you don't have a finished product in mind! All handwork is, IF you love to do it! The French knitter coil turns out extra pretty with variegated yarn!
We used to get a big spool oh empty thread. Hammer 4 nails in it and then do the same thing! We made bracelets, rugs, jewelry, cat collars. I never knew it had a name!
I have never seen one of these before. I use rthe same concept on circle looms to make toboggans. To make cord like this though, I prefer a lucet. It's more compact and doesn't require any other tools.
Hi Colton! The French Knitter is used to make i-cords. I-cords are great for drawstrings or handles but they can also be coiled into everything from coasters to rugs. Use a variegated yarn like Color Waves to make colorful i-cords that you can wear as bracelets!
You made this look really easy! I like the purple yarn against the knitter, so much easier to see what you were doing. Where did you get your french knitter?
I-cord much easier, can be done practically without looking (and yes, I had one of those things when I was a kid) whereas this nancy critter requires careful attention
Such a clear explanation. Thank you! This will be lots of fun with the grandchildren.
My grandfather made me one of these with a wooden spool from thread and a few nails. Hours of fun, great intro to weaving, knitting crochet.
Excellent thank you……lovely and simple
Thank you. This is the third video I have seen and the basic casting on seems to be slightly different with each! Yours is the simplest though.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It helped so much
I really enjoyed learning to do French knitting for the first time and I couldn't have done it with out you!!!

This was a very entertaining activity to do in my spare time ❤
Could coil into trivets or rugs, as embelishments on items. Got lots of scraps? Make a giant I-cord into a super bulky wight yarn.
Only video that helped thank you. Used to struggle with this all the time but basically it helped
We grew up doing this -- it was called a "knitting Nancy". Great for making loop closures.
If I use two pegs, will I get a flat panel?

So what is it used for????

Colton Michael when i was little,I did this with my mom. When long enough we made a small area rug.

This is like rainbow loom
Thanks for reminding me how to do this, I'm having fun making my own jump ropes!😊
I have done French knitting since I was young.I am knitting a mat
It wasn't bad
Could you go faster
Woodglut is nice for that.
This looks tedious. Much easier just to knit an I cord. But of course for someone who doesn’t knit I imagine this would do
I bought Woodglut once and now I have lifetime access to thousands of woodworking projects.
