Nana Hemanhene, you are indeed a breadth of fresh air in this 21st century and since your ascendancy to the throne 4 years ago. Nana you are endowed with wisdom and with the level of your education and the knowledge you acquired, you did well in correcting the erroneous impression that the tour guides at the Cape Coast Slave Castle had been feeding to the tourists particularly, the African Americans that the Ashantis engineered the rounding up of our own ancestors to the castle and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to the North America and the Caribbean and sold into slavery. You brilliantly corrected the tour guides long held misinformation in the sense that, when the castle was opened in 1653, history would recall that there existed no Ashanti Empire or Ashanti Kingdom. King Osei Tutu 1, with the help of his friend Okomfo Anokye , founded Ashanti Kingdom between 1701-1703. Nana, four years into your reign, this is my impression about you, astute, thoughtful and your vision for bringing tourism and encouraging many African Americans for visit and take advantage of the incentives created to enhance the economic development for Heman community and among others you’ve already achieved, makes you stand out and worthy of your subjects. Piaaaw !!
Well said, many are misinformed about the history of Asanteman. The notion that Asantes are major perpetrators of the slavery trade is very popular but false. Two reasons as you partially mention the formation of the kingdom(early 1700s) compared to when transatlantic slavery started in 1500s. Second reason being the lack of evidence of slave markets, dungeons etc. in Asanteman. Beyond these reasons Asantes often used prisoners of war or indentured servants as a way to grow the empire. At it's peak the Asante empire was bigger than modern day Ghana. There needs to be pushback against the narrative that Asantes were major slave merchants. It's all European propaganda, to keep people from learning about our history as being freedom fighters. This fighting spirit carried our people through to Jamaica, and it's part of the reason chattel slavery was abolished. Slavery wasn't abolished because Europeans suddenly realized that it was wrong, but it was abolished because of slave revolts all across the diaspora. We need to do a better job of documenting our histories as opposed to letting foreigners write it for us, and this is the reason for the distortion. When you fight the British for 70 years, you shouldn't expect Europeans to have favorable things to say.
@@kwadwosenya469 Perfect and I appreciate your reinforcements. I encourage folks out there to take interest in reading, researching to expand their scope of knowledge and opining their analysis on the social media will enrich us in a tremendous way and hopefully reduce the traffic of garbage being spewed on the social media.
