Emma's Wing Walk

  • I have always wanted to fly on the wing of a plane, ever since I first saw 'wing walking' displaying at air shows years ago. As soon as I watched in awe-it was on my 'bucket list of things to do before I die'.
    I even applied to the Utterly Butterly team about 7 years ago now (previously the Crunchie team and which later became the Guinot team and is currently the Breitling team) for a chance to be a part of their display team. Alas it was not to be.
    I did find out that they now offer 'regular' people the chance to have a go now, but they are based over in Gloucester which is quite a trek for me.
    When I did arranged my Sky Dive (see my other videos) at Headcorn Aerodrome (near Maidstone). I learned about 'Skymax Aviation' who also own the same type of classic bi-plane (a Boeing Stearman) and offer the same opportunity to the general public at both Damyns Hall Aerodrome near Dartford.
    I had an absolutely amazing time. I felt no fear at all, just pure exhilaration! I thoroughly recommend the experience to any of you adrenaline junkies out there!
    I hope you enjoy watching!

      I've done skydive month ago. Now thinking about this. How scary is it ?

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 5 лет назад +1

      It can be scary but it depends on your attitude. I was scared before getting on top of the plane but when I was stood on top waiting to taxi to the runway I took a couple of deep breaths and I chose to relax and let go. I'm glad i did that because I've since seen an interview with one of the Breitling Wing Walkers and she said "If you hold on then you are a wuss! Myself and the pilot of course will be watching you to see if you are a wuss or not!" The company that I flew with are called AeroSuperBatics (formerly the Breitling Wing Walkers) based at Rendcomb in Gloucestershire and they do not do any upside-down manoeuvres for first time flyers (unless your name is Richard Hammond!) Also all of their manoeuvres are performed within the confines of the airfield and if you wish to land at anytime during the flight all you have to do is stretch your arms out and put your thumbs down. The pilot told me that he spends most of his time looking at the wing walker and that the wing walker is in control of the flight. From 'thumbs down' to landing takes about 15-20 seconds. The pilot sees 'thumbs down' as an order unlike some tandem skydivers who will chuck you out anyway despite your protests! Between this and skydiving? I love both but I'd probably put this on top. There's just nothing like getting on top of an old bi-plane! £399 well spent! Video was only £25. My skydive was £249 plus £119 for the video! If I had done the 15,000ft skydive (£318) plus video it would have worked out more expensive!

    Hey there, sorry I only just saw your comments. I have heard of a woman in her 80s doing this-and whilst this is exceptional, I think it does go some way to demonstrating that this is not impossible. You will have no difficulty breathing, and you don't need to learn any special breathing techniques. If you want to read about the experience-please take a look at my blog about it :)

    I guess you know how many stearmans have ended up inverted when landing.

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 5 лет назад +1

      That's because those Stearman's had brakes which were mistakenly applied before the tail-wheel was down on the ground. The Stearman that I wing walked on had the brake mechanism and front seat flying controls removed. Still no guarantee that it won't flip over but much less chance of it doing so. The company that I use, AeroSuperBatics (until recently known as the Breitling Wing Walk Team), have had over 30 years experience and a 100% safety record.

    this looks absolutely incredible.
    today is my 19th birthday and as a present to myself i'm thinking of booking wing-walking flight.
    the only thing that's stopping me from doing it is the breathing difficulties.
    i mean...i get panicky blowing the hair dryer directly in my face, speeding through the air at up to 150mph seems rather daunting to me. haha
    how was it for you? i heard they teach you breathing techniques.

    • @georgejacob3162
      @georgejacob3162 5 лет назад

      If you haven't done this since your comment I can suggest breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. That's what my tandem skydive instructor told me to do. I have done a Wing Walk like this and had no problem breathing but I do know that passengers before me said that they could not breathe but that may have been due in part to the very cold and windy weather on that day.

    and one more thing ...
    i actually suffer from a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta, which literally means brittle bones. it's the genetic disorder version of osteoporosis and i sadly suffer from quite a few problems.
    i'm wanting to pack in as much as possible whilst i'm still young and agile just in case a few years down the line i suffer from an injury that kills my dreams! two of them being sky-diving and wind walking. just wondering which had less impact on your body/seemed safer?
