OK.... so, I've had a pretty awful week at work, but these 11 minutes 48 seconds have gone a long, long way to help me to feel so much better. Thanks to all at Norman's for just being nice people.
@Dino Buckhoy Yep. Not going to argue with that. Thanks and cheers Dino. Glass raised to you. Let's face it - guitar will always make things better. ....whether playing or listening.
Sometimes I go in my bedroom and try to copy what I saw Lemmo doing during Guitar of the Day and find out quickly my shredding sounds like I dropped a box of forks.
Keep at it! I do the same. You'll learn pretty much everything you need to know once you're able to exactly copy one or two of the riffs he plays here.
I pretty much grew up with CBS Fenders, back in the ‘80s. They were plentiful, and fairly inexpensive, and me, and my friends all had a bunch of them. In my experience the b*tching about their quality is just that - my hands on time with them tells a different story. Honestly, I can’t recall any problems with the ones I owned, or had access to, in terms of build quality, playability, tone, and even looks. The only complaint l agree with is that some of them were indeed HEAVY, mostly the ash body ones, but there were lighter ones as well. We also had some pre CBS Fenders, and they were great, but imho, the main attraction to them, was that being older, with more playing time on them, they were a bit more broken in feeling. But overall, the quality, and craftsmanship was right up there on the CBS ones, and tone wise, my ‘79 Strat was easily the best out of the bunch. I’m not saying there was no way there weren’t lemons here and there, but honestly, we never had any. Have you ever seen a total dog of a CBS model on this channel? I believe the bad ones were few, and far between, and I’ll bet there were a few duds made before ‘65 as well. Remember, even tho the corporate office may have been out of touch - there were still good, experienced people on the floor doing their best to make guitars worthy of the Fender name....Imho, for the most part, they succeeded.😉👍
There are two types of 'bad guitar'. Ones that can be easily sorted by a tech/luthier. And the real dogs. TBH, most unloved 70s Fenders are perfectly fine nd glorious when good: if there is an issue just fix it.
I'm looking for THE one right now. They are the best sounding Strats IMHO and a total bargain at half the price of a Custom Shop. If you get one that has a decent neck joint, not too heavy and the fingerboard not too narrow of course! In 20 years time, once people start realizing just how good these things can be, a good one is going to cost a fortune. And the big headstock, it's also the best looking Strat!
I have an 82' big head stock blond with maple neck and all gold accessories , knobs , pegs , etc. , it's a serious boat anchor but it sounds very similar to this one , clear and bright , jangly , big tone , classic Stevie Ray stuff , luv that sound , great demo , great GOTD , all this 70's 80's stuff is 35-40 years old now , which is vintage in my books , well done lad , thanks guys
I have a '79 Strat, sunburst with Rosewood neck, it was a 16th birthday present. Unplayable when new but a good guitar tech set it up into the best guitar I ever played. If I could, I'd have it buried with me.
I don't see Tiesco Del Ray or the Tiesco tulip guitars that used to adorn the racks at Longs Drugs in the early 70's. For $39.95 you too could be a rock legend. The squeal was delightful. Particularly on a dimed 100W half stack.
I hae a '79 Strat that I bought new in 1980. It was white when I bought it but has turned more cream through the years as they do. It remains in stock condition.
All that VH fun starting at the 11:00 mark is exactly how I broke the arm off in the cast one-piece block of my '79 back in the day! Nowadays mine has an all steel block with bent steel saddles (which this one also seems to have) and I pull out the Ibanez with the Floyd Rose if I'm ever inclined to do serious dive bombs 😎
They got lucky in some cases, sure, but I owned an original '79 years ago, and it is one of the worst guitars I've ever owned. The other '70s Strats I've played has been a let down too, so the only proof is that at least a few of the '70s Fenders can be good and even great, but I think the overall quality is far better nowadays.
I recently bought a 77. Best feeling neck ive ever played and in mint condition. I compared the pickups to my other strat which had kline 64 pickups and they sounded pretty much identical.
I've been looking for a Strat again recently. I've listened to loads from 50s all the way through to modern custom shop models. The ones I have liked best are the 70s ones! They sound like they have more meat and depth to the tone while still having the classic twang and glassy clean tones.
I bought this guitar then realized the bridge isn’t original. They are not happy I’m returning it. Norm swears the bridge is original, but Fender says it’s not. I think the first year the 2 point trem was used was in 85 or 86.
I think what fender is doing now in the present is awesome. It took them a while they move slow. They stuck with that American standard for 35 years. I hated that guitar. At the end of the seventies Japan was making the best guitar in the world. I think even today Japan is still building some of the best guitars in the world.
Travis Dodge awesome dude!! Is the neck shape on it on the thicker side? Just wandering because I have a 70s reissue and it’s got a pretty beefy neck so just wandering how a 79 strat neck would be bro 🤘
Looking for a Stat . I grew up in the 80s and this guitar sounds so familiar to me. I hear A-Team background music in there! If there's a better Strat tone anywhere on the planet, I want to hear it please!
That just sang with Lemmo’s tonal & technique magic in full display. The VH really cooked, and I gotta say, if/when GOTD features a Strat from that era again, would be awesome to hear it with an Ehx electric mistress to get that Andy Summers Police sound from that time.
Man...my 79 ash strat is the heaviest guitar I've ever held. And that's with a few ounces of wood at least missing from the Floyd rose I ended up having installed in the early/mid eighties. It was a hard tail originally. Painted it a few times in high school and college. Settled on a green metallic using paint I had left over from painting my 70 heavy nova in vocational auto body class. Lol. About ten years ago I stripped all that, even the fullerplast. Was intending to restore the original sunburst...but ended up just putting a satin clear on it and it's pretty damn gorgous.
Great playing as usual! I've been searching for the past hour but can anyone help me find the video where lemmo plays wonderful tonight by eric clapton?!??
That one day will come Daniel. The secret is, never give up on your dreams, with full faith, and works you will acquire and achieve all that you set your mind on.

i have this EXACT guitar.
It was my father's, and it was the guitar i learned to play on. Still has the best clean tone ive ever heard
Fantastic guitar ! Pure character .. unique 70s tone .. EXCELLENT PLAYING
unique ? no....
70s strats had their ups and downs but when you find a good one they're AMAZING
this one sounds perfect
Agreed, to me it sounds particularly good. Especially that 4th position/neck & middle.

I really love the black pick guard and black pups on the cream, really delicious looking axe.

Great shredding! I have a ’79 stripped from red with cracked matte lacquer. Best clean sounding guitar and it handles overdrive very well.
Straturday!
Schtraturday! 😉
Huu hoooooo
Mike-it's so cool to see the joy you get out of playing these guitars. Bravo!
Yellow Jen's favourite.
Wow Michael the sound you get from this guitar. Just tremendous as always. Huge Huge thnx. Love your playing
I never care about or want a strat until I watch Lemmo jam on one. Sounded so cool. Well done sir
Amazing player
Such a great guitar to have! 70s Strats really don't get the love they deserve! However! Gotta do a Maton!
Bloody aussies. Always with the Matons. 😂. But, yeah. An old wedgetail would be nice. The fret less basses are rad af too.
There is something special about. The 70's Strat tone🤗💜

Can you do a shop tour?
The Strats and aTeles and Les Pauls on the wall look very interesting ! 😃
This guitar has the thing for me
Wow. That’s a true beauty.
Has the bridge been replaced? Looks like it has two pivots and bent steel saddles?
Well spotted!
I believe the pickups have staggered pole pieces which would suggest that they have been replaced as well.

I had a redburst 79 strat. Wish i kept it.

Beautiful strat!!!
Loved the neck pickup on that one but not the bridge pickup.
In 1978-1979 Tokai came out with the ST-80 springy sound Stratocaster. That blew Fender away.
Definitely did, I have a 76 Greco se800 fender couldn’t match the quality of those MIJ builders.

This yellow was one of the few colours these 70s strats had. The white one you're referring to is early 70s Hendrix had one

a really heavy heavy instrument not for the virtuoso but for the leader.put it in overdrive it will hurt your back but it will blow you away.
Why is their still an issue with showing the case?
because you don’t play the case, they are all similar.
