    The addition to this video including the fruiting phase, taste testing and further discussion will be linked above when its posted. The nutrients I used were the Flora series from General Hydroponics and also Armor Si. I decided to split up this video for the final phase because I will be including another time lapse and also have some talking points. Also because the answer was already very clear and no further testing is needed, at least for the vegetative stage. And fruit production in the aerated method is obviously going to be the winner.

      Pikudo Pikao there is no fungus. Those are air roots and the white on the plastic net cups is mineral deposit.

      Actually roots in both buckets have some sort of micro-organisms growing on them. Look into brown slime problem with hydroponics. You can't really expect to submerge living roots in water and expect them to not have micro-organisms growing on them. Aerating your water wont save you, you'll just get harmful aerobic bacteria on there. Cooling the water aint gonna work either. You can either add pool shock, or beneficial bacteria to the water. Adding beneficial bacteria is costly, it can also clog your lines and air stones. Google how to make a solution of pool shock and water for hydroponic plants. This method is extremely cheap and keeps your water practically sterile and does not cause harm to your plants at all. You would basically be doing the same thing the government does to all the city water in america, and that has proven to be very safe for humans and very toxic for micro-organisms. If your roots are not totally white like snow, its caused by some sort of micro-organism. Trust me I let that stuff grow on my roots for years and had no clue it was something that could easily be ridden of. Happy hydro

    I work at a place that sells hydroponic supplies and you explained to me in 6 minutes what I have not understood in almost 2 years of working there! Thank you! Also, it was a joy to watch the plants dance as they did. I had no idea they did this! I knew they followed the sunlight, but didn't realized they moved in such a beautiful way, especially in synthetic light. What a treat to witness that!

    Kratky works best if you set it and forget it. Keep it closed to keep vapor inside. Opening it all the time means you ensure air pruning will occur, which diminishes the whole purpose of kratkys method. Keep it closed for water vapor build up. Only adjust or replace solution when it’s almost used up. Best for short term herbs

    I’ve used Kratky for one season and it was amazing for leafy greens. A key component was ensuring that the water level was even with the bottom of the net cups at the start. The roots were astounding, tearing the net cups apart in some cases. I believe that is why your Kratky plant did so poorly. I suggest trying the experiment again after making this adjustment.

      I was wondering if there was another explanation because I have watched several videos on YT with completely opposite results. In most cases roots are definitely more, but the plant itself grew bigger. I'm not an expert, so I was sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out why his experiment didn't work like the others.

    btw: I Think i can see air-roots on the Kratky plants (the stuff that looks like mold :D)

      Dave yes. That’s correct. What looks like mold is the small capillaries. the roots have increased their surface area to breath. They are also great for nutrient absorption like what I notice in my planted fish tank, but the fish like to pick at the fuzziness and end up ruining them. Interestingly, I don’t see much of that “fuzz” in Dwc even above the water level.

    It's so cool to see something in a different time - like we could never see in "real life"/real time. It really does show you things you could probably never notice otherwise.
    The way the plants moved, in circles, during the lights out phase - and how the began to anticipate the coming darkness or searching for light, change in environment or whatever exactly they're doing is fascinating.

    I at one time had two 8 site hydroponic units and I absolutely had to put aerating stones in every single plant site and also the nutrient mix. The one time that I did not have that going I ended up with root rot. With the air in there never saw root rot again.

    Plants do have clock proteins. Many plants use them together with temperature to determine when to sprout.

      @@mrtechie6810 Ebb and flow is good.But you just need to make sure the water you give is well aerated.Aquarium bubbler,or just a pump that keeps water moving.Water as it goes against the receptacle its in and travels back down takes oxygen with it.
      Use this in your storage barrel before you do ebb and flow to increase the oxygen.

      @@djyul thank you. I put a 50 liter plastic storage box with a tiny Atman water pump, facing up. I added some baskets that are just touching the water surface. Then I made some trays with covers that have holes to put plant pots in...figured to pump the water from the box into the trays using a timer, and let it drain back.
      I placed them under a large window. I already have peace lilies (need shade apparently) and spearmint. I would like to grow these, plus strawberries, basil, and ginger (I have a piece rooting in tapwater).
      I am about to buy the nutrient concentrate and media. Looking at General Hydroponics 3-part; hydroton and pumice.
      I am new at hydroponics...I really appreciate any advice you can give me!

      @@mrtechie6810 If you are new to Hydro,1st bit of advice is KISS! Keep It Simple Stupid! Not saying you are stupid,just what it means.
      2nd,your water container needs to be closed to slow down evaporation.Keeps EC and Ph more stable.
      3rd,RO(Reverse Osmosis water)This has a very low EC,0.003 if i remember correctly.
      I gained my knowledge growing weed,and using rooted cuttings.These can not take any more than 0.9 EC(EC is the amounts of salts in your water)Normal tap water has an EC of about 0.8,which means you can only put 0.1 nutrients in the water.
      But if you mix RO water with tap water it gives you an EC of about 0.3 which means you can give 0.6 of your desired nutrients.If you give cuttings more than 0.9 they will die!
      4th,Light,this is important,the ratio of light to the ratio of nutrients is something you must discover yourself.But where 1 guy is using 4x1000w lamps in a 4sq mtr grow space,his ratio of feed will be higher than someone else who is using 4x600w lamps on the same area.
      5,Good ventilation,is also important and a movement fan to stop mildew from starting where leaves start to lay on each other.
      When you get it right,they grow really fast,and healthy!
      When i started growing years ago there where no liquid feeds,just granulated.I used to use Peters,dissolving in warm water and then adding to feed water reservoir.
      You need to buy good quality EC and PH meters!!!! And keep them clean rinse off after use! Add your feed to 1 ltr water and test! Then x that for your 50ltr reservoir.
      When you have problems with your plants always check the PH and EC first.And also you must check the calibration of meters reguarly,or when you make a mix that you normaly use and it doesnt come back with the reading you expect.
      Its not called EC now,was when i used to do it.I am not sure but not all feeds will be good for all types of plants,you need to check this!

      @@djyul thank you very much for your advice! Yes, I rebuilt my old RO unit and it's plumbed to a float valve. I have a TDS meter and a PH meter.
      I had been propagating corals, so I am highly experienced with water test kits, dosing macronutrients and microelements manually or with a timer, CO2 vs PH, lighting vs metabolism, water oxygenation, etc.
      In the past, I also kept angelfish in freshwater planted tanks.
      I need to learn the rules for keeping these plant crops, as I have not farmed these before, even in my garden.
      I tried using regular fertilizer for hydroponics, but I suspect it is deficient in calcium and magnesium and likely in iron too, plus skews the PH. Unfortunately, I discovered that my test kits are only for seawater and not for freshwater, so I would have to buy a different set of test kits. So I decided I should just go with a proven nutrient product made for hydroponics (e.g. General Hydroponics - GHE softwater), and use it for a few crops until I see good results, and only then I should start experimenting with cheaper products, mixing my own chemicals, testing instead of replacing all the nutrient solution, etc.
      There is a ceiling fan in the room. And I have a "swamp cooler" evaporative humidifier and a hygrometer. Trying to keep the humidity above 50% on the dry (35%) summer days that we often have here.
      As far as illumination, I hope I can use the natural sunlight that comes through the living room window. It measured around 25,000-30,000 lux, if I recall correctly. This would make the plants grow in one direction...not sure if that will be a problem?

    Fantastic. I've found my best results with chillies (scotch bonnets, habeneroes and jalapenoes) have been in flood and drain in a hot conservatory in the UK that hits 110F in summer.. They love it They seem to hate DWC. Been playing with basil in the same area in dwc vs outside in soil.. It's all about experimenting with what works in which situation.

      @@mrtechie6810 Each has it's own advantages. Aeroponics is great as long as the pump or power are stable. Ebb and flow gives you a bit of leeway. If the power goes out you have a few hours. NFT I find hard work but still experimenting. Dwc I prefer for seedlings and starting. I would recommend ebb/flow to start with though.

    I did this back in 91' , I used a fish tank whisper pump with a stone between six plants , with a 3 valve separator/regulator ....I had a 17 leaf pattern on one of my cannabis plants....It was my first hydroponics set. I always think outside the box.... The hydro set was called the "Emilys Garden" it came with a 175 HPS , but I negotiated for a 500 HPS...My friends called my plants ALIEN weed...They were amazing.

    I have grown the exact same way with bubble stones from f ish store for over 12 years. works great! another great way is to use big pvc pipe with holes and run that slanted and let water run down it to a bin then use a pump to put back at top and run down like a constant waterfall, and keeps bad water out of the roots and filtered.

    Aeration has a tendency to strip bacteria out of water (I helped run an experiment in a water treatment facility where we proved it)! This can be good as it can be used to keep the water bacteria free! However you then have bacteria laden air that should be vented somewhere safe, since it could potentially cause long term health problems!

    thanks for this video, I converted my kratky bucket into DWC for my peppers, and transplanted a new plant (bittergourd) in DWC Bucket system. This proves that there are more advantage in DWC compared to the Kratky.

      Can u do a video kraty method with a ultrasonic Mist maker in the tub, I haven't had time - ( dealing with work) - for the experiment it would be a lifesaver if u did it, just to know if it works then i could move forward( anyways aren't you interested if it'll work and what kind of growth it will produce???).........

    The reason that aeration makes such a difference in hydroponics is that fully submerged roots rely on cellular respiration using oxygen during lights off periods to continue growth with any sugars they had left over for the night which uses oxygen and allows them to continue growth in the dark and in water with no oxygen they can have reduced and stunted growth.

    excellent video as usual . the reason for the leaves behaving during the night, even though, it taks more ATP resources is that plants in a way, advertise for the photons they anticipate to get from the day light. same principle goes for the flowers. it is hard wired in the gene sequence of their DNA thru the evolution.

    Aerating the water (bubbler system) means the whole root system can be immersed in solution ( aka DWC deep water culture) the plants will grow even better , for optimum results keep the solution topped up to 1 cm below level of highest stones in the pot.

    A big difference is you can use kratky off-grid, outdoors, and scale up with no increase in running costs. So if you plant 10 kratky for the price of 1 aerated DWC you're way ahead.

    I personally, loved the "aero garden" comparison. We.re now in March 2019' and I've started an aerogarden strawberry patch using their new flood and drain, "aka: ebb&flow" basin. This thing is AWSOME. So long as I customizing the flood system to once per 24 hours or 1440 minutes . So I then did a 5gallon DWC/Aeroponic hybrid system. OMG...4 week old starters JUMP into growth production. Thank you for showing me that I'm on the right track!

    Well done video presentation, and good job! My experiments have also shown better success with peppers using DWC, versus Kratky method. That being said, the Kratky side of your experiment has a couple noticeable items. First, the dominant plant has consumed enough nutrient to leave it's companion plants struggling to reach the nutrient. Results would have been much different, if nutrient level was kept high until sufficient root growth was seen on all the Kratky plants, then gradually allow that nutrient level to lower for the formation of more gas exchange roots. Second, when changing out nutrients, the nutrient level in the Kratky side should not be refilled above the level at which the plants are growing. Once nutrient consumption roots are out of the water, they transform to gas exchange functionality. The transformation does not reverse, and essentially the roots drown when the nutrient level is raised.

      Matt Garver I never refilled the kratky side higher than the existing level. Toward the end I let it down to about 1.5 gallons and just replaced it as needed. Thanks

I used the Kratky method 100% for my outdoor 2017 garden, enjoying the benefits of remote garden placement without electricity. By employing the fill and forget technique of Professor Kratky, I also did not need to refill my containers outdoors.       The gas exchange roots will adjust to the new regime as long as there are still water roots below and some air roots above (in air). It you submerge everything the water roots wont be enough to sustain the plant because you`ve effectively temporarily shut down a large proportion of the overall rootmass. I run aero where the root structure can steered to water or gas exchange depending on the misting regime. Overmisting prevent gas exchange roots growing, and/or causes them to be lost if already present. Once the overmisting situation is rectified the gas exchange root structure returns or begins to form. The gas roots recover faster if they were present previously vs if there were none to begin with ;)

      (It honestly sounded like bunk, but Matt's channel also shows some interesting results... so I may have to watch y'alls videos do some testing on my own.)

    Nice experiment. So really it is not the 02 saturation that is causing the the better growth, it is the splashing from the bubbler.

    You should do a video between 2 dwc set ups with different pumps..one air pump pushing more air into the water vs one that pushes less. Just to see if there's a difference.

    I think the plants "dance" because they are using their leaves to search for light. Once they find it, they stop dancing because they know exactly where the light is.
