I see a lot of people say this often on rather standard or even mediocre videos, but in this instance it's absolute truth. Even the stuff that you might already know can be insightful. I'm going through the whole playlist and learning a lot. In addition to learning stuff, it's actually rekindling my love for a synth I bought when it was new and did very little with. I was actually contemplating selling it because I'm an idiot who didn't bother to use it properly, but by watching these videos I'm realizing how much there is to these things (and I'm also an idiot for not reading the manual, but come on, it comes on two giant sheets of paper folded into fours which is not only easy to throw away but also a total pain in the ass to read, my Minibrute came with a solid book!) so now I'm playing around with it and figuring it out... finally. Instead of selling mine, I'm learning to love it. And that in turn makes me think better of the Korg brand because now I know just how capable this thing is. I'm just saying, I bet Oscillator Sink doesn't want to limit himself to one brand (maybe unless they pay him well enough, I don't know, I'd certainly consider it), but yes, this is the kind of person, this is the kind of demonstration you need to convey the capabilities of your synths, someone who can demonstrate great functionality in a very clear and easy way. The problem is I don't think they have incentive to do that when they're constantly releasing new gear.

I went to stay with my inlaws and by sheer chance got a Monologue the day before we left. I took it with me along with headphones. I pretended I was going out for a hike and hid in the toolshed playing with it whilst enjoying the packed lunch and flask of coffee they kindly made me :-) I've had a Monotribe for years and I like the similarities. I really like its ability to transpose sequences. My neighbours tell me that it sounds good, which is weird because I didn't think they'd be awake that late.
I have made well over 30 various patches with similar methods. I found out about the creation of an extra" LFO" years ago,but it can come in handy for various sound scapes!
This is amazing ....... I am 45 & haven’t felt this excited about buying something since I was a small child. WOW, Even more excited than when I purchased the first Pioneer CDJ 500 mixers in my early 20’s & these were £1600 a pair.
This was by far the most exciting tutorial for Monologue, which I have had the pleasure of watching. Already made four separate patches and jammed for three hours using the tricks from LFO 1 to LFO 4 from the video. Three years after making this clip made my day.
Glad to see someone showcasing many cool features of the Monologue, please continue! It is such a powerful synth, and still somewhat underappreciated.BTW, you don't need any notes in the sequence in order for this to work. You can skip the part of filling the sequence with a fixed notes in tie, and no need to use key hold,, just leave empty the "note" part and go straight to "motion".
+luciano notarfrancesco glad you're enjoying the videos. You're correct, although in that case you do need to leave the sequencer running. Both ways work, but I like how when you do it this way you know the note is going to start the same way every time - but it depends what you're after in each particular patch. A little oddity with this, if you are recieving clock from the sync in the sequencer doesn't restart on a new note like it does otherwise. Handy when you want to transpose a sequence without restarting.
You are a much better natural player than a lot of people I see demonstrating these functions. Like when you manipulate knobs while recording, it actually sounds good, instead of sounding like random knob fiddling.
I'm commenting :47 seconds in just to let you know that I'm working my way through this whole playlist and loving every second of it. In particular, I am all ears about the sequencer because I have very little clue how to operate it or more importantly why to use it. That's one thing that I love about your explanations so far, you not only explain how to do something but why you'd think to even do it in the first place, and that's even more helpful than the how (I can probably figure out the how eventually if I try).
Honestly, this is the first time I see the step sequencer as something above just a gimmick. Thank you! But no thanks for me wanting to buy the monologue now lol. I want a gold one

Yep im at a simular stage with my monologue , i find like im just knob twitching , i struggle to make something that sounds good , though im a novice. But this guys knowledge helps.
+Uzo you betcha, but, in testing I found that if you push it too far (too slow I mean) you start to get aliasing between the values because the resolution isn't high enough. It actually sounds kinda cool, so you could totally make use of it, but it's something to consider.
o I took the moog prodigy user guide presets and made some of my own and they sound spot on if not better.Btw i love the triangle sound on this I set the dual triangle and osc to triangle and slow envelope and boom this thing will go below the human range .Another reviewed did not realize you can set the tunning to -12 in global and pitch bend to -12 and I use a korg nanopad with hold to achieve low end like a moog.
One of the best videos for a synth by far. I learned so much about what i already knew but didnt know. approaching it in this way really just breathed new life into my whole day!
Great vid sir, the sequencer is great fun man, and then over on the left there's the tweak stick mod/pitch morph-wheel thing that allows you to map other parameters, so you go left hand morph wheel, right hand evil bass line 😎🎹 ...all while sitting down on the back porch cord-free (no power supply necessary), with extra batteries, sunglasses, and enjoying a Spiced Vanilla Chai Tea.
Wow, just wow. Im pretty new to synths and this video has blown my Monologue wide open for sounds. Getting so much more out of it now, running it through a Zoom MS70-CDR with this technique is awesome

I picked up of these babies last week. Complete newbie to synths, so I'd figure to watch a couple of videos on this little intrument. Already spent hours on youtube (and even more toying with the monologue), and every video seems to get me more excited. Seems I made a good call getting this as a first synth.

My Monologue arrived this morning, and I'd just like to thank you for this video. Seeing as I have an external sequencer at my disposal (specifically a Novation Circuit) this has opened many, many new worlds for me. Thanks. PS: On that note, seeing as one can get a Circuit and a Monologue for about the same price as a Circuit Mono Station, what's the point of the Circuit Mono Station?

Not sure if you can do this with the mono, but with the minilogue xd you just record the motion without notes. Then press play to get a “key sync off” mode for the lfo. This way the motion sequences don’t reset every time you hit a key. Vice versa, I wish the minilogue xd had the trig function to transpose sequences to achieve the key sync lfo effect you demo in this vid.
That's a really powerful technique on its own because it lets you have different length pitch and motion sequences - so many cool things you can do with that!
Nice, thanks for the video! One thing I like to do is to change the wave type with the motion sequence, gives quite a interesting sound and I usually put some noise on beat 2 and 4 to get some "high-hat" action.
+Aleksander Eriksson oh man, if I'd gotten into the whole "building a beat" side of things this video would have been almost twice as long! It's amazing what you can achieve on that side of things considering this is a frigging mono-synth! I like to mess with a tempo sync'd square wave LFO in these situations too - you can "fake" at least a whole extra bar of music that way!

Thanks for your videos :) can you automate the VCO mixer ? it's for sending a pattern with a few steps via midi out while making those steps hit silence on the monologue ; does monologue transmit steps that are desactivated via midi out ?
If the VCOs are turned off you'll still be sending note information over midi I believe and yes - all of the knobs other than the master volume can be automated - which is awesome!
Thanks for the tips! You might also just use the actual keys and sequencer, with slides maybe, for the octave jumps. This way you’d have a fifth fake LFO. And more possibilities for the motion control.
In your video you seem to have a key re-triggerable LFO stack. Can the monologue adjust the step length? I know with the minilogue if you change the step length to max (whole note I think) you will extend your continuous motion automation time by a lot (discrete won't change much). Additionally, i'm not sure if the mono can do this, but for the mini you can just record a sequence with only the motion automation and no notes, then just leave it free running. This loses the key-retriggerability but it is another style of LFO modulation in its own right. I'll have to see if the mini has key trig sequencing, I've never noticed that option. Great video!

Yes, you can adjust the step length for more intricate tweakability in the automation - I did notice that when you push it (1/1 step lengths, slower tempo) you do get some aliasing in the motion sequence. Sounds cool (if you like glitchiness), so you can make use of it, but it's worth bearing in mind. And yes, you can do "free running" on the Monologue too, I like the retriggering more often than not, but it's certainly an option.

Hi, just bought this as my first synth - love it. I can't get trick 3 to work, whatever I try I just can't get it to allow motion data on a single step. I put the sequencer in Motion mode and hold down a button on the sequencer but it won't light up. The only way I can record motion is via trick 2 i.e. when recording whilst a sequence is playing. Any ideas please?
Off the top of my head, it won't light up until you also twist a knob. You might also need to have a note on the step, but I might be mis-remembering that. Also make sure you're not in a menu as that can interfere with it too.

would you recommend bass station 2 or monologue for beginner? outside of features, how would you compare the VCO vs DCO and filter sounds between the two? looking to create new wave/post punk bass & leads & learn basic synthesis.
I don't have a Bass Station 2 so I'd be doing what you will be doing and listening to demos and choosing the one you like better... For what it's worth - when I've tried a BS2 in a shop, I've always been super impressed with the sound, but it's quite different sonically to the Korg. Not to muddy the water - but you should probably throw the Minibrute into contention as well.

Am I missing something obvious? I was just wondering why one needs to record the long held note sequence. Isn’t it possible to achieve the same results by just using a motion sequence with key follow switched on whilst playing normally?
Oscillator Sink, aha, I see. Isn’t there a note latch/hold function button? I can’t remember off the top of my head. A long press on the key trig/hold button if I recall correctly.
In the global edit menu, on button 6, you should find the sync parameters. Make sure that: Clock Source is Auto (USB or midi, depending on how you're connected) Enable RX Midi is On Enable RX Transport is On If that's all set up correctly then you'll need to make sure your daw is sending midi clock and transport messages on whichever midi interface you're using. Other than that, make sure you stop rather than pause the sequencer. Oh and make sure you're running the most up to firmware update on the Monologue.

I use a steinberg ur22 interface and i have my korg monologue connected via jack cable to one of the inputs, further i have my korg connected via midi cable to my interface and via usb to my laptop as well in order to be able to use it as a midi controller for software instruments as well. I am using ableton as a DAW. Thank you for your tip i think it works=) Allthough now as long as it is connected the sequencer will start playing again whenever i hit play on my computer...hahaha maybe thats normal. Also if i keep it connected this way it will at the same time trigger the other software instruments as it is chosen as a controller....thanks again
The patch editor. To be honest Oscillator Sink I just want to see more patches being shaped, basses, leads and organ type sounds. my mono arrived without many and its the way I learn easiest bro.
Thanks, great technique. I use a similar strategy to use the monologue as a sequenced filter for external audio, works great. The key trg/hold is nice, but i cannot use it from an external midi sequencer (digitakt). I can change patterns and play notes, but the key hold is not working.. Anyone got this working?
+Patrick Seurinck update: this should work fine - I've got it working from my KeyStep, BSP and from within Reaper. I'm guessing you've checked the obvious stuff like midi rx/tx channels?
Thanks so much for the quick test! Key hold is really useful when sequenced, it's hard to play by hand at the exact right time.. Just did another quick test with the digitakt. On the monologue the key hold is saved with the pattern. I recall the pattern from the DT, working fine. If I press the channel button on the DT, the sequence starts playing. However, the moment I record notes on the DT, the Key hold is disabled on the monologue, while I'm still on the same pattern... Very strange behaviour. Slaving the monologue to the DT would be way more fun if I could use key hold. I'll have to dig a bit deeper, maybe ask around on the elektron forum or the DT or monologue FB page. Thanks again for testing!
+Patrick Seurinck I wonder if the DT is sending out any strange CC or program change messages?? One thing to check: try changing the Korg's clock source to Internal - that should rule out any transport messages messing with things. (for the record my setup worked both with internal and external clock, but I'm just thinking of stuff to rule out).
I just tried that - at first it seemed to work with internal clock. But as soon as I send program changes, everything starts to be erratic. Internal or external clock, all similar.. I set an infinite note and program change on step 1 and step 9. When I press play, the key hold is lit and the sequence plays on step 1, but not as a sequence, but as a short note . At step 9, the program on the mono changes, but the key hold is not lit... Key Hold is saved with the program on both programs of course. On a second try, things are the other way around, now the key hold is lit on step 9. I tried to send program changes without note commands on step 8 and 16, and the notes themselves on steps 1 and 9, doesn't help. Pressing the channel button normally works, but after playing a sequence, it is as erratic as the sequenced steps.. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's messed up. So there are basically 3 scenario's per step: 1. Program change with key hold lit, sequence plays 2. Program change with key hold lit, short note 3. Program change, key hold not lit.. All from identical steps, it's probably a bug in the digitakt midi output. DT and ML connected over a midi merger, but I connected them directly and got identical results. Both are on the latest firmware versions.. I'll send a bug report to Elektron and Korg, and ask for help on the forums. Anyway, long off topic post, but thanks for helping out!
How do save your own preset? Such as the ones u just built. I'm wanting to buy this synth, I just can bring myself to spend money on a machine I know nothing about.
+Eric Marquez you hit the "Write" button, choose one of the 100 preset slots, then hit "Write" to confirm. Super easy. Unless you mean save to a computer? In which case there's a free Sound Librarian application from Korg that allows you to do that (or you can just do a sysex dump and record the Midi if you're old school). Hope that helps!
I followed along but....the 1st 4 steps of my sequence don't record.....all other steps are 100% fine....1st 4 just play back a little "click" sound. Anyone have any thoughts? Is my Monologue broken?
Did you start from an initialised patch? Try clearing the motion sequencing and try again. Sounds like something is closing down your envelope on those steps maybe?
You can remove all of the notes from the sequencer and just leave the sequencer running once you've established the motion behaviour of you want. Kinda like the difference between an LFO with and without key sync.
Quite right. You can also change the step division to go even longer, but eventually the modulation will get "steppy" as you lower the resolution (which actually sounds kinda cool too).
thanks, i will! -- the ability to have that MSEG-like behaviour to add little 'blips' or 'hiccups' a few seconds into the sound, is a gamechanger for a synth of this price -- you can make such emotional patches with that capabilitiy

Great video. Korg could make the Monologue a generative beast by implementing a simple random mode for the sequencer. Very simple code

Not sure if you can do this with the mono, but with the minilogue xd you just record the motion without notes. Then press play to get a “key sync off” mode for the lfo. This way the motion sequences don’t reset every time you hit a key. Vice versa, I wish the minilogue xd had the trig function to transpose sequences to achieve the key sync lfo effect you demo in this vid.

That's a really powerful technique on its own because it lets you have different length pitch and motion sequences - so many cool things you can do with that!

Nice, thanks for the video! One thing I like to do is to change the wave type with the motion sequence, gives quite a interesting sound and I usually put some noise on beat 2 and 4 to get some "high-hat" action.
+Aleksander Eriksson oh man, if I'd gotten into the whole "building a beat" side of things this video would have been almost twice as long! It's amazing what you can achieve on that side of things considering this is a frigging mono-synth! I like to mess with a tempo sync'd square wave LFO in these situations too - you can "fake" at least a whole extra bar of music that way!

Thanks for your videos :) can you automate the VCO mixer ? it's for sending a pattern with a few steps via midi out while making those steps hit silence on the monologue ; does monologue transmit steps that are desactivated via midi out ?
If the VCOs are turned off you'll still be sending note information over midi I believe and yes - all of the knobs other than the master volume can be automated - which is awesome!

Thanks for the tips! You might also just use the actual keys and sequencer, with slides maybe, for the octave jumps. This way you’d have a fifth fake LFO. And more possibilities for the motion control.

In your video you seem to have a key re-triggerable LFO stack. Can the monologue adjust the step length? I know with the minilogue if you change the step length to max (whole note I think) you will extend your continuous motion automation time by a lot (discrete won't change much). Additionally, i'm not sure if the mono can do this, but for the mini you can just record a sequence with only the motion automation and no notes, then just leave it free running. This loses the key-retriggerability but it is another style of LFO modulation in its own right. I'll have to see if the mini has key trig sequencing, I've never noticed that option. Great video!

Yes, you can adjust the step length for more intricate tweakability in the automation - I did notice that when you push it (1/1 step lengths, slower tempo) you do get some aliasing in the motion sequence. Sounds cool (if you like glitchiness), so you can make use of it, but it's worth bearing in mind. And yes, you can do "free running" on the Monologue too, I like the retriggering more often than not, but it's certainly an option.
I do a similar thing on my volca fm , but only because I’m learning Fm ,this is the quickest way to get strange sounds

Hi, just bought this as my first synth - love it. I can't get trick 3 to work, whatever I try I just can't get it to allow motion data on a single step. I put the sequencer in Motion mode and hold down a button on the sequencer but it won't light up. The only way I can record motion is via trick 2 i.e. when recording whilst a sequence is playing. Any ideas please?
Off the top of my head, it won't light up until you also twist a knob. You might also need to have a note on the step, but I might be mis-remembering that. Also make sure you're not in a menu as that can interfere with it too.

would you recommend bass station 2 or monologue for beginner? outside of features, how would you compare the VCO vs DCO and filter sounds between the two? looking to create new wave/post punk bass & leads & learn basic synthesis.
I don't have a Bass Station 2 so I'd be doing what you will be doing and listening to demos and choosing the one you like better...
For what it's worth - when I've tried a BS2 in a shop, I've always been super impressed with the sound, but it's quite different sonically to the Korg.
Not to muddy the water - but you should probably throw the Minibrute into contention as well.

Am I missing something obvious? I was just wondering why one needs to record the long held note sequence. Isn’t it possible to achieve the same results by just using a motion sequence with key follow switched on whilst playing normally?
In retrospect, yes I think you can. It is a lot easier to work with the sequence this way though because you can leave it playing while you tweak.
Oscillator Sink, aha, I see. Isn’t there a note latch/hold function button? I can’t remember off the top of my head. A long press on the key trig/hold button if I recall correctly.
Yes, however that will only play the sequence - no notes in the sequence = no sound. It's not a general "note hold" for Drones.
how can I syncronize my sequencer with my daw in order to start it at the beat 1? or would you recommend using quantisation? sorry for the spam
In the global edit menu, on button 6, you should find the sync parameters. Make sure that:
Clock Source is Auto (USB or midi, depending on how you're connected)
Enable RX Midi is On
Enable RX Transport is On
If that's all set up correctly then you'll need to make sure your daw is sending midi clock and transport messages on whichever midi interface you're using.
Other than that, make sure you stop rather than pause the sequencer.
Oh and make sure you're running the most up to firmware update on the Monologue.

I use a steinberg ur22 interface and i have my korg monologue connected via jack cable to one of the inputs, further i have my korg connected via midi cable to my interface and via usb to my laptop as well in order to be able to use it as a midi controller for software instruments as well.
I am using ableton as a DAW.

Allthough now as long as it is connected the sequencer will start playing again whenever i hit play on my computer...hahaha maybe thats normal.
Also if i keep it connected this way it will at the same time trigger the other software instruments as it is chosen as a controller....thanks again

The patch editor. To be honest Oscillator Sink I just want to see more patches being shaped, basses, leads and organ type sounds. my mono arrived without many and its the way I learn easiest bro.
I do get that the bass sounds aren't hard to get but i loved yr funky bass

Thanks, great technique. I use a similar strategy to use the monologue as a sequenced filter for external audio, works great. The key trg/hold is nice, but i cannot use it from an external midi sequencer (digitakt). I can change patterns and play notes, but the key hold is not working.. Anyone got this working?

Thanks so much for the quick test! Key hold is really useful when sequenced, it's hard to play by hand at the exact right time..
Just did another quick test with the digitakt. On the monologue the key hold is saved with the pattern. I recall the pattern from the DT, working fine. If I press the channel button on the DT, the sequence starts playing. However, the moment I record notes on the DT, the Key hold is disabled on the monologue, while I'm still on the same pattern... Very strange behaviour. Slaving the monologue to the DT would be way more fun if I could use key hold. I'll have to dig a bit deeper, maybe ask around on the elektron forum or the DT or monologue FB page. Thanks again for testing!
+Patrick Seurinck I wonder if the DT is sending out any strange CC or program change messages?? One thing to check: try changing the Korg's clock source to Internal - that should rule out any transport messages messing with things. (for the record my setup worked both with internal and external clock, but I'm just thinking of stuff to rule out).
I just tried that - at first it seemed to work with internal clock. But as soon as I send program changes, everything starts to be erratic. Internal or external clock, all similar.. I set an infinite note and program change on step 1 and step 9. When I press play, the key hold is lit and the sequence plays on step 1, but not as a sequence, but as a short note . At step 9, the program on the mono changes, but the key hold is not lit... Key Hold is saved with the program on both programs of course.
On a second try, things are the other way around, now the key hold is lit on step 9. I tried to send program changes without note commands on step 8 and 16, and the notes themselves on steps 1 and 9, doesn't help.
Pressing the channel button normally works, but after playing a sequence, it is as erratic as the sequenced steps.. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's messed up.
So there are basically 3 scenario's per step:
1. Program change with key hold lit, sequence plays
2. Program change with key hold lit, short note
3. Program change, key hold not lit..
All from identical steps, it's probably a bug in the digitakt midi output.
DT and ML connected over a midi merger, but I connected them directly and got identical results.
Both are on the latest firmware versions..
I'll send a bug report to Elektron and Korg, and ask for help on the forums.
Anyway, long off topic post, but thanks for helping out!
How do save your own preset? Such as the ones u just built. I'm wanting to buy this synth, I just can bring myself to spend money on a machine I know nothing about.
+Eric Marquez you hit the "Write" button, choose one of the 100 preset slots, then hit "Write" to confirm. Super easy. Unless you mean save to a computer? In which case there's a free Sound Librarian application from Korg that allows you to do that (or you can just do a sysex dump and record the Midi if you're old school). Hope that helps!

I followed along but....the 1st 4 steps of my sequence don't record.....all other steps are 100% fine....1st 4 just play back a little "click" sound. Anyone have any thoughts? Is my Monologue broken?
Did you start from an initialised patch? Try clearing the motion sequencing and try again. Sounds like something is closing down your envelope on those steps maybe?
Trigger function really falls short in terms of the way it switches when you press another key.
You can remove all of the notes from the sequencer and just leave the sequencer running once you've established the motion behaviour of you want. Kinda like the difference between an LFO with and without key sync.
If you change the tempo, you might get more time to add some longer transitions
Quite right. You can also change the step division to go even longer, but eventually the modulation will get "steppy" as you lower the resolution (which actually sounds kinda cool too).

thanks, i will! -- the ability to have that MSEG-like behaviour to add little 'blips' or 'hiccups' a few seconds into the sound, is a gamechanger for a synth of this price -- you can make such emotional patches with that capabilitiy
