My Husband and I bought one this July and so far so good. Great car and saves a lot of gas. The space is amazing which we wanted because we travel a lot. Great car recommend 💯
Like many who have reviewed this vehicle, you requested comment regarding the hvac/infotainment interface. I agree with Kia's choice to use this arrangement. It blends well with the clean, futuristic appearance of the dash and also provides an audible cue to which mode is active. Besides, most of the time, the driver will use the steering wheel mounted volume control to raise, lower or mute the audio source (who wouldn't?) and the dash mounted panel can remain in hvac mode most or all of the time. This is a non-issue, really.
The “textured” (I like that description) rocker switches can also be pushed in. The track forward and back rocker is only a rocker switch, so it’s not textured.
I drive the EV6 and I also have that toggle between the HVAC and audio. I found out that you can tap/press and hold. I got presented with a preferent setting. Now, if I toggle to HVAC after a few seconds is automatically reverts to audio. No fuss. No hassle. You’re welcome. 😊
The non textured can only be moved up and down. The textured switches are the ones which can also be pressed inward for choosing options in the audio controls. I've been watching allot of 2023 Sportage videos, since I plan on a future purchase. It was nice to learn a few new things form yours. Well done.
I now own this car in the EX hybrid trim. The HVAC/radio switching does get easier. You can long press either button and then select either the infotainment or HVAC to be the default. It does make it easier.
For the climate and audio capacitive touch panel, you can set it to automatically default back to audio controls after a few seconds so you will always know that it’s set on audio when you go down to reach for the knob.
But both the switches on the right side are textured, if they were trying to make that distinction then it would make sense to do that on both sides of the steering?
I've had the Wolf Gray with Carmine Red interior (non-hybrid FWD SX Prestige) for about 2 weeks now. Love it, great vehicle. The shared climate/infotainment is a little annoying but you get used to it. Great tech and love the styling.

I have the sportage sx hybrid and the problem is that the piano black does hit you on the eye when the sun is aiming directly up your roof. Also for the people planning to buy the sportage I can say it's quiet when it is on the road and the ventilated seats are freezing cold on the sx trim.
If you hold down the arrow on the climate control for 4 seconds it will offer you a choice to default to one or the other after a few seconds. I keep mine on climate and when I hit the arrow it goes to the radio screen and after 5 seconds will go back to climate by itself.
My guess is that any switch that is textured on the steering wheel is not only a rocker switch but a push button switch. If it is not textured, then it is only a rocker switch with no push button function.
I believe that is exactly what it is. The volume also has a mute function when pressed inward, and on the right side the push button functionality is to pause/resume cruise control and as "ok" for the driver information display. The previous/next track rocker has no push button function.
My guess about the textured vs untextured steering wheel switches is as follows: Maybe Kia decided that having two switches next to each other that operate similarly (up and down) could result in unwanted inputs by the driver. So, in an effort to create an easy way to allow a driver to differentiate the switches without having to look down at them Kia textured one and not the other. 🤔

I'll say this...I saw pics and videos of the new 2023 Honda CR-V, and wasn't impressed. This new Kia Sportage has way more features and probably costs less than the CR-V. Honda still lacks to add ventilated seats, a panoramic roof, a HUD, no hybrid options on lower trims, and no full digital dash. Which is weird, because the new Civic offers a full digital dash. Honda has a way of making customers to pay more for less. If I'm in position to buy a new compact SUV, it will be this Kia Sportage hands down!!

i think in general, the hyundai/kia dealership is what keeps a lot of people away from the brand even though their cars are great now. just rarely hear positive things about the dealership experience.
Thanks for the useful and entertaining review, as usual! The Sportage has quickly become my 'dream' SUV, at least until full electric models are more accessible.
Please do your homework on engine, transmission and power train issues on the Sportage, or ANY Kia/Hyundai model before purchasing. Bought a 17 Sportage, loved the spaciousness of the interior and all…but now it will be sitting at an out of state dealer for approximately 7 months due to the engine issues. Had I done my homework and learned of ALL the cheap engines they are installing and are going out without warning, I never would’ve bought it. My car is only 5 years and 7 months old. And there has been other issues-like the $2000k AC compressor that went out just 2 months before the engine went out WHILE driving 75 mph on an interstate. $30k down the toilet for a car that is only going to last 7 months past the day I pay it off?!? Do extensive research if you think you still want one, but I’d avoid Kia/Hyundai at all costs.
@@traceywojtal9045 anymore this is not true with both Hyundai and Kia. Kia in 2021 did a complete rebranding of their vehicles after they hired Mercedes designer. The engines and drivetrain now is nothing like it was in 2017. Actually for 2021 Kia placed 3rd in reliability and have not had much issues in the past 2 years. @@traceywojtal9045 Also, to add onto that now all new Kia vehicles offer a 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain and a 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper to back up the claims of their changes to reliability.
@@daben1074 well we shall see in the next 5 years… there are always kinks and issues with new designs of parts/power train parts that have to be worked out. I used to work for a Chevy dealership eons ago…and new models have issues too. And Kia/Hyundai have had that same warranty for many years, even before I bought my vehicle.
@@traceywojtal9045 well that is with every new model or vehicle. I have a 2021 Subaru Legacy and its absolute garbage and Subaru has normally been good vehicles. So to say the new Kia sucks already and give it a bad reputation makes no sense rather me saying it is a good reliable vehicle. Any vehicles are gonna have issues here and there doesn’t matter the brand or model. That’s why there is such thing as a warranty that covers expensive parts.
This is a really appealing vehicle but im just worried about long term reliability, can someone tell me if whether the gas or hybrid version will last me 10+ years if i take good care of it? Ive only owned hondas in the past but hyundai/kia are getting really attractive.
Knob control idea for Kia: provide an option where the left knob controls temperature and the right knob controls volume. The logic being the driver can easily set the volume from the steering wheel and the passenger uses the right knob. If the passenger wants to set the secondary temperature separately, hit a button then turn the right knob. This assumes the tuning knob is not as crucial, as most cars don’t even have one.
I don't mind the climate and volume setup. It's innovative and new. It's common for people to adapt to something new or different. And, it looks clean and simplistic.
I have the opposite thought. If innovative and new requires more action from the user to get the same results as before, then it's a poor design. There's no positive/benefit to the user for adding a 'switch' button between HVAC and stereo controls.
@@jraheemjefcoat429 Not sure what you disagree with. It's straight facts. A) It now takes the user more action to do the same thing as before. B) There is no user benefit. Unless you can point out a user benefit for adding the toggle/switch button that I can't think of.
@@slandshark I actually one of those drivers, that uses the function on the steering wheel. So this design will not bother me. You can agree that it's not functional. I can agree that it is. AGREE TO DISAGREE.
@@jraheemjefcoat429 It's not a requirement to use it or not to realize the design and function is worse than before. It's fact that it takes more actions by the user to accomplish the same thing as before, not less or same. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean the design is better. The design is worse because it's literally worse. lol
Great review. I love the looks of the Sportage Hybrid but I do wonder about the long term reliability of the turbo/hybrid combination. Also with the temptation of the turbo, I wonder how that will affect hybrid mileage if someone gets heavy pedal crazy.
“Cabin noise sounds manageable” is as little concerning since previous sportage was getting similar feedbacks and inside it was noisy as a freight train.
The textured switch it for the mute function on it since it's the volume rocker. Funny enough, my '23 Stinger doesn't have a textured switch for it but the switches all have a silver lining to them
we were debating between sportage and sorento, and ended up go for sorento. One of the biggest reason is that the kids said that they cannot see as much as in sorento when sitting in sportage. Other thing that we find the window size is rather small for sportage.
I've had my SX Hybrid for 2 months, and quite enjoying it. I believe the button on the steering wheel is not textured, as it is the only one out of the four that doesn't have a specific function when you push it in.
EXACTLY what just happened to mine a month ago!! My sportage is only 5 years and 7 months old and the engine went out WHILE driving on the interstate. And it will be approximately another 6 MONTHS for them to inspect my vehicle, open a Kia Warranty Claim, order & wait for parts and installation. This all happened on a road trip out of state. And Kia Motor Consumerism won’t help a loaner or rental upfront. They expect us to pay the rental out of pocket for 7 months. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a Kia/Hyundai product!!
I wonder if the center console can be wrapped to improve functionality? The gloss black is just overly done. I do like the design and overall features.
The matte grey paint looks great, especially with the red interior. But my oh my is that so not typical family friendly. Folks are gonna head to the (brushed!) car wash and kill that paint!!
what a nice details about the door being also the “fenders”; it makes a big difference in snowy locations. I bet it also diffuses the frigid air more efficiently
On the topic of the track switch not being textured, I don’t have experience with that specifically but I do find it odd that on my 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe the track switch is backwards. Meaning to go forward in the track list I push down, and up tj go back. I brought it to the dealer thinking it was a mistake, and after a couple hours of work on their end they determined this was a design choice (and a poor one at that) and they apologized and said there was nothing they could do. It seems that Kia and Hyundai as very close cousins have specific feelings on the track switch on their vehicles.
For the climate control and radio control change button, if you press and hold it, a menu will pop up and you can choose to have it switch back to radio or climate control automatically after you hit the button.
It is kind of odd, since the Textured vs Untextured is not symmetrical on the 2 sides. Textured vs Untextured Buttons are often used on Android Phones to distinguish the volume button vs the power button, for example.
Micah, it's interesting that you mentioned the squiggly lines in the windshield. My friend's Range Rover has the same thing and whenever I ride with him it takes a while for my brain to stop focusing on them! Nice vehicle. I like it. The matte gray paint looks great on this Sportage, but I would never buy a vehicle with matte paint because of the high maintenance and washing limitations. As for the two controls on the steering wheel, my thought is that they used two different textures so that you can immediately differentiate which is which when you are concentrating on the road. I'd love to buy one if not for the tons of gloss black and the insane markups that Hyundai/Kia dealerships are pushing on people
i think in general, the hyundai/kia dealership is what keeps a lot of people away from the brand even though their cars are great now. just rarely hear positive things about the dealership experience.
@@myemailiscool pretty much every brand dealership is adding markups and is a hassle to deal with now a days.
Paid no markup at Galeana in Fort Myers.
@@RRLV434 Nobody marks their vehicles up as much as Hyundai/Kia. We're talking $8k-10k
Also, I will be wrapping all the gloss black in a matte clear fingerprint resistant film when the vehicle arrives.
As for before then Kia sucked and everyone knows that, which explains why they made changes.
Looks nice but I don't trust the longevity and safety of Kia and Hyundai engines.
go ahead and buy a Toyota or Honda, leaves more Hyundai Kia available for the rest of us!
@@RRLV434 Will do. Hope you carry a fire extinguisher!
@@RRLV434 P.S. New report today is now mentioning Hyundai recall for exploding seatbelts. UKs Daily mail is reporting.
The textured switches on the steering wheel perform a function when pressed in. The smooth one can’t be pressed in. That’s the difference.
This is a terrific value and what the new Lexus NX should have been.
This is a really appealing vehicle but im just worried about long term reliability, can someone tell me if whether the gas or hybrid version will last me 10+ years if i take good care of it? Ive only owned hondas in the past but hyundai/kia are getting really attractive.
I have had my 2017 Kia Niro hybrid since 2017 and I still get good gas mileage and I haven't had any issues yet
Textured switch.. i like the distinction.. i use that switch the most.. forwarding tracks and finding the right one..
@@slandshark We can agree to disagree.
@@jraheemjefcoat429
It's not a requirement to use it or not to realize the design and function is worse than before.
Love these reviews, been watching your channel for years
Windowless white vans have the best candy 😎
The textured switch it for the mute function on it since it's the volume rocker. Funny enough, my '23 Stinger doesn't have a textured switch for it but the switches all have a silver lining to them
Nice to see the inside drivers door matches the passenger door unlike the previous generation
Holy cow, your daughter has grown up in front of us the past couple of years. She’s getting tall!
we were debating between sportage and sorento, and ended up go for sorento.
The only thing that concerns me is if the engine catches on fire. Between Kia and Hyundai, it seems to be a issue that needs to be truly fixed.
@@traceywojtal9045 the NTSB needs to be on their ass like sun on skin!

The textured steering wheel rockers can be pushed in! OK on right side and Mute on Volume!
Why are you, as the driver, reaching for the audio controls on the center console, when you have controls on the steering wheel?
That particular switch (on the steering wheel) is textured because you push it.... it's a mute button.
Missed going over some of the best parts! Those headrests with the built in hook, vents in the back, and ports built into the seats.
I appreciate you mentioning those features here. Cheers!
An accompanying video suggestion Micah, how much would it cost to get the shiny black plastic covered in a wrap? Keep up the awesome work folks!
That’s what I will be doing when mine arrives in a matte clear fingerprint resistant film.
@@Seanheery where would I get that wrap installed
I really love manual controls for everything audio and HVAC.
Production quality right here! Nice camera work.
That's very kind of you to say. All credit goes to Evie.
It is kind of odd, since the Textured vs Untextured is not symmetrical on the 2 sides.
Textured vs Untextured Buttons are often used on Android Phones to distinguish the volume button vs the power button, for example.
Love the styling. Will they bring a performance model?
The textured switch can be pushed in. The volume one can be pushed in and it mutes
Had to do a double take when I saw XO on the infotainment screen. Fantastic taste in music.
It’s to distinguish the two switches…kind of like the bumps on F and J keys on a QWERTY keyboard
Micah, it's interesting that you mentioned the squiggly lines in the windshield. My friend's Range Rover has the same thing and whenever I ride with him it takes a while for my brain to stop focusing on them! The first time I thought it would make me crazy because I couldn't stop seeing them and I had to look out the side windows. Finally after a while I noticed my brain must have become accustomed to them and I didn't notice them as much. It's really funny how something so small can be such an annoyance, even for a short period of time
The matte looks amazing. I wish it was available on the non-hybrid. We got an SX-P and love it so far.
did not know you got your own channel now.
Seems like they could have put an icon in the infotainment screen to show which system is active. Could it still be done with a firmware update?
How’s the acceleration? Wondering if the steering firms up at speed.
Such a unique and stylish SUV which really stands out in the segment. I'm moving towards a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 EV (Or hopefully the Genesis GV70 EV) but if I was in the market for a compact SUV, this matte grey on red would probably be it. Great video as always!
I doubt Goodwins market has any cleaning products for that paint.
The textured buttons can be pushed in while the non textured one cannot.

You know, like when you are in a high speed getaway from the cops (applies to California only) 😂

What are all the Car Manf. thinking using glossy black reflective finishes?🙄. It looks cheap. I prefer that woven grey textured look.

I’m guessing the textured button on the steering wheel is so the driver can distinguish them without looking at them, since they would otherwise feel identical.
Yeah, but why are the switches on the right identical?
@@MicahMuzio My guess they made the button textured to distinguish the mute/volume button for the steering wheel. It's the most function people use on the steering wheel, for those who actually uses the volume/mute button on the steering wheel..😄😄😄
